The Granville Chism you wrote about is really John Granville Chism. He was b. April 1883 in Missouri and d. Jan. 1, 1951. He married a Cora E. Unknown. I have no dates on her at this time. They had 5 children, Teddy, Reno, Hazel, James and Dorothy. John's parents were John McPherson Chism and Elizabeth Hunter. This John's parents were Granville Chism and Judith M. J. Duncan. They are my ggg-grandparents by their daughter Leona Amanda Chism who married Walter G. Adcock. I show 3 others with the name Granville as a first or middle name. They are (1)Thomas Granville Chism b. March 1863 in Missouri d. ??. His parents were Granville Chism and Granville's 2nd wife Hannah Moore. (2) Granville Howard Chism b. April 1900 in Oklahoma d. ??. His parents were Thomas Granville Chism and his wife Alice Unknown. (3) Granville Chism b. Aug. 1854 d. ??. His parents were Nathan Chism and Martha Letchworth. Nathan is a brother to the Granville Chism that married Judith Duncan and Hannah Moore.!
The marriage date for Granville and Judith Duncan Chism was July 4, 1848 in Barren Co., Kentucky. Judith d. July 29, 1859 in Morgan Co., Missouri. She and Granville are both buried in the Hopewell Cemetery in Morgan Co., Missouri. I visited their graves about 2 years ago. Granville married Hannah Moore on Jan. 16, 1860 in Miller Co., Missouri. Hannah died sometime after 1880 probably in Missouri. Hope this helps.

Another interesting aside. The 1910 US Census for Tulare Co, Ca shows a Granville Chism, age 27 born in Mo. Father and Mother also born in Mo. Further, his wife, Cora, was born in Mo. There must be some faulty information along the way. This Granville would have been born ca 1883.

Granville did in fact have an uncle, Jacob, who moved his family from Ky to Mo. Perhaps Granville F was living with or near his uncle prior to going to Ca.

Therein lies the difficult part. Granville F. Chism in California died in 1858 - age 35 - which makes him just the right age...born in 1823. Moreover thare is one telling that has him living in Missouri before comming to California in 1850. Somuch that is so similar to the Granville Chism that married Judith Duncan and lived in Missouri until his death in ~1863 (if i recall). It is almost as if they were closely related - cousins or something. But as with anything that far back - the stories get mixed up and the records, if they exist are hard to find and not always as clearly written as one would like.
I do have it in mind to folw back along the Chism line that you have found to see what if anything I can find. Fortunately Granville is not a very common name.
This week I am busy getting a genealogy package ready to go to Ireland for research on another family line - slim hope but a dump load of information (it always seems like so much more whan I am the one compiling it!!)
I hope to get back to the Chism question by Friday as anything that I find will make great conversatin at a get together coming up.
thanks for all the help. If any of this falls in place at all - I'll be very glad to hear of it!!
Thanks again,
Dave Whitmarsh
