I have a John Franklin Chisholm born July 8, 1849 in Simpson Co Ky. I beleive he lived very close to the Tn/Ky line. He died May 28, 1893. I don't have anything on his wife. His father was Obediah Chism Jr. Maybe this is a start.

Cheryl,
I am not the guy to answer any Chism questions. The only one I know anything about (and that surely isn't much) is the Granville F. Chism of my original posting - my wife's great grandfather. I would imagine that one of these other fellows might be able to suggest a direction - though it appears there are a lot of Chism famiilies in Kentucky - quite a project!
Good luck.
Sincerely,
Dave Whitmarsh
I have been watching the messages regarding Granville Chism - he is not in our Chism line that we know of. However, in one of the most recent posts I picked up a bit of information regarding the Chism surname and Kentucky.
My husband's great-greatgrandfather was Franklin Chism, born 1807 in either Augusta County or Stafford County, Virginia. We have heard both places and various spellings.
By 1835 he had made two trips to Ohio with a brother (name unknown) and settled in Fairfield County, Ohio where he married Elizabeth Geiger in 1838 and raised at least 6 (possibly 8) children.
Is there a migratory website that would show a routing or pattern for people coming North from Virginia, through Kentucky, and into Ohio?
We have gone to both county websites in researching, but have come up with nothing. We have all kinds of information on Franklin and his family - and THEIR families from 1838 to present. But we are unable to find anything prior to his 1835 arrival into Ohio.
Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
Thank you.
Sue

The largest concentration of Chisholm/Chism/Chisum in Ky is located in the South central part of the state. In particula Simpson, Warren, and Logan counties. Most of these folks come from the same line and came out of Va. Several familiesin this line moved to Mo. There are quite a few Barnes in this area and I think they are out of Va.

Well, What a surprise! I really hadn't thoought to get many responses and you guys have had a major discussion - which I have found very interesting.... and I am glad to have more or les made it happen.
Unfortunately the intent of myoriginal query hasn't moved forward a lot , but perhaps one or both of you can help point me in a possibly productuve direction. As it happens, I am somewhat familiar with Granville Chism and Judith M. Duncan, but as I recall they pretty much lived out their lives in Missouri and remained married to each other - thus complicating any direct involvement with California. Granville is not that common a name though and that one and the California Granville may be from the same area or even family group. Where in Kentucky is the Chism name most prominant and where did the Missouri Granville Chism come from (city or County - I am not familiar with Kentucky). Or if you have other thoughts on the matter, I am certainly interested. One sourse states that Granville F. Chism married Marticia Ellen Barnes in Kentucky in1842 and that they did not move to Califrnia until about 1850.....plausibly true to the extent that Granville was a miner and ultimately di!
ed in a mining or mining related accident in Shasta County, Calif.. Are there any concentrations of the Barnes name in Kentucky?...particularly that may have come from Virginia around 1830s or so?
Thanks again for sharing a lot of very interesting information. By the way, I am just starting down the road in genetic genealogy - any suggestions, good resources or pit-falls to avoid?
thanks again.

Yes, Joe and I manage that DNA project jointly, and the s250-L mail list where the main topic is comparing data on all C-250 , z-250, and s-250 soundex names.
I "think" we have 6 variations which 'appear' in the southern region about the same time and haven't fully documented the "root" family of each,
Scism (Tennessee, NC, and SC> Arkansas>Missouri.)
Sissom, which definately derives from Sisson. (Sissom and Sisson were both used earluy on in NY, but most Sissons are english, and they have 65 dna participants on Sisson-L., they do not share their dna results with people outside the DNA group.)
Chism
Schysm (SC to Louisiana>eastern Texas)
Sisson (used in many groups, not always traceable back to England.)
Chisham - seems to be an english grouping.

Very interesting, Jeff. The Sissoms in this part of the country (Tennessee and Alabama) seem to think that Sissom is a deviation of Chisholm/Chism/Chism. I'm sure you have been in touch with Joe Sissom. I think he is involved in a DNA project of some kind.

This 1776 William ( predates Tennessee) was probably born in Virginia or North Carolina, and is reputed to be a brother (no source docs) Of a Peter Scism, (North Carolina) , James Scism (South Carolina, his lines went to Louisiana and became SCHYSM) and possibly a Joshua Scism. Tom Bridges once had up on a website a suggestion that they were children of a Joshua Scism whose mother was "arminda" Scism, a widow who came to North Carolina and reputedly (again) married a Dellinger. The only dellinger in the area, that I have been able to locate was married to someone else, and could not be her husband)
There is also a reputed brother Abraham. He is supposedly related to the Chism Spelling.(again No docs in hand).
This linkage has been a brick wall for about twenty years.
The "base" areas where the southern Scisms appear (all shortly after the Rev war) are Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, SC, and Hawkins County Tennessee (formerly Washington District)
The Duncan and Skelton families seem to have contact with members in different spellings, but welding this all together is elusive.
The Core group of Scisms (as in EARLIEST known, anywhere) start to appear in the Dutch Colonies about 1650, as Van Sise, (syssen, Schism, et. vars.)
The best I have been able to establish is the name derives fron a West Flanders village called CHIJ ( pronounced Siss) and the immigrants to the new world from that village were known as Van Der Chijs, (Van der Sijs) (and their sons would be Van Sijsen)
Dutch reformed church records in teh NY area (hudson river region) show many varieties of the spelling in christenings.
Since SCISM appears nowhere else in the world (except american imported lines) I am making the investigation that these southern lines are derived from those in NY, AND that it actually may be several different families, but all from the same place.
Genetics may help, but few in this family wish to participate, the name isn't very common.
My particular line is out of the Hudson valley. Also my genetics do not apply there is known "deviation" of paternal name/lineage in my father's case, he grew up under his maternal grandfather's name. His father was a McCann.
Jeff Scism, doing this since 1974, and still stuck on these probable relations.

Have you made the link that puts both families in Barren Co, Ky in 1848? Also you show William Scism born in Tn in 1776. This is earlier than any chism I know of with the possible exception of John Chisum, son of John and Ellender. Could it be that William is a son of John and Ellender? If so he would have been born in Va. How solid is Wuilliam's birth place. Are you aware of another reasearcher who has spent a long time making the Chism/Scism connection? I can find his name if you like.
