I am following the James Chism and Mary Howard line from Barren Co. KY line.. their children came into Cooper County MO.. and owned slaves of whom were my ancestors.
The Howards also owned some of my ancestors probably via virture of marrying into the Chism family.
The Howards and Chisms are distributed across Morgan, Cooper and Moniteau Counties.
The Morgan County MO website for genealogy has an excellent resource that cross references land deeds and slave schedules.

My ancestor Mary Ann was owned by Jacob Chism... who willed to his daughter Elizabeth who married Lot Howard.
Mary Ann took the surname of HOWARD and married Samuel McClanahan and James Ross. She has 4 children in 1870 with the surname of Ross -- but her son Marion's death certificate says his father was William Wilson. She disappears from the census after 1870. Marion Wilson ends up in Bunceton MO on the Ravenswood Farm with his sister Millie Wilson. Morgan Co. MO was carved out of Cooper Co. See -- "Who Were the Slaves on Ravenswood" at: www.missouri-slave-data.org.
Here is the will of Jacob Chism.

Also -- I have tracked slaves and transactions related to Michael Chism -- and his children and siblings.
See the probate document of Mary Smith Martin (or Mastin?) Walker -- mother of Michael Chism's wife Didamy Smith.

Jacob Chism's children were involved in a couple of long term lawsuits over slaves.
I have used the following two websites as guides for following the Chism and Howard families:
Descendants of OBEDIAH HOWARD and PRISCILLA AVERY BREED

Obediah Howard, Orange County, NC

I recently found my CRUMP family members living next door to the household of William Howard in Moniteau Co., Missouri in 1870. A comparison of the family to the ages noted in the slave schedule looks like a good match. In any case; generally in 1870 black families were still living near or with their former owners.
Since my black family members owned by the Chisms married into the black family members owned by the Howards -- the pieces are now starting to fall in place.
Now I am trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together from KY to MO. I am in need of James Chism will; his brothers and even his father's if anyone has any suggestions on where I might find some of these documents from Barren CO., KY.

I am descended from the Chism family that settled in Meade Co., KY, and
would love to share information with cousins.
My lines include Harrison Sewell/Suell, who married Sarah Ann (Sallie)
Chism in 1839; and James Chism, who married Eliza(beth) Howard abt. 1837.
