Hi again Sharon,
Thank you for the information. I have found a Ruby Chism in SSDI Search Results as follows:
SSN 430-58-6216 Residence: 72027 Center Ridge, Conway, AR
Born 17 Feb 1911
Died Apr 1982 Issued: AR (Before 1951)
Any idea who this Ruby might be?
My line (as far as I know) is Clarence Washington Cleaver > Virgil Winfield Cleaver > Virgil Washington Cleaver > and then myself. I know Very little from family members as my father abandoned my mother at age 3 (hense, I did not know that Clarence and Ruby divorced). Again, thank you so much for any information that you can provide. Yours, Tony

Tony, Ruby Jane Chism who was married to Clarence Cleaver was my grandmother. As I am sure you are aware, Ruby and Clarence divorced. Ruby married my grandfather, Joseph Nicholson. Ruby died July 16, 1920. Ruby and Clarence only had one child, Dicie. Dicie was born in 1911 and is still living. I have a photo of Ruby and Dicie, my guess is it was taken around 1913
If you are interested in further information, let me know, Sharon

Sharon, I just noticed your reference to Ruby Chism. Did she, by chance, have a daughter also named Ruby? Another resercher emailed me saying that they had a Ruby Chism married to Clarence Washington Cleaver of Conway, Arkansas (my great grandfather). Thanks for any help you can provide.

Well, I have notes from an old Chism Family Association Monograph
Newsletter..says a Lucy Claiborne married Elijah Chism/Chisum. My notes
are just half here...I will be leaving town soon for three weeks. Email
me later & maybe I can find some more clues.
This Lucy Claiborne was dau. of Richard -------. I may be able to find
that later.
Good luck! Debby J.
I can't really help, and am leaving town shortly for three weeks.
But there were bunches of Chisms from Halifax Co., & Hanover Co., Va.
I think some of the Hanover Co., Chisms went down into Meade Co. Ky., &
White Co. Tenn.
as well as other places.
Check out the Chism Family Association ---James Chism of Virginia.(don't
know the URL --but you can find it through Rootsweb)
I am also looking for a John Chism---a ggggrandfather---my gggrandfather
went from Overton Co., Tenn. to McLean Co., Illinois in the late 1840s.
His mother (name unknown) came from Va., but his father
came from S. Car. Many other Chism families seemed to have gone from
Halifax Co., into North & S. Car., and on into other southern
states...Alabama, Mississippi, Tenn., etc.
Good luck with your search!
Debby J.
I'm new to the list. Am looking for information on Ellen Chism. She married Parks Rutledge on Dec. 6, 1841 in Ch. Co. Her father is listed as John Chism on the license. They are found on the Charlotte Co., VA 1850 census. Ellen is listed as being born in Halifax VA. Approx. DOB is 1827 based on the census. Her mother is listed on the census in the household of Parks. Based on the census she was born in 1780 in Halifax, VA.
By chance, has anyone connected with or heard of these names? Would love to have any info. on parents, siblings, etc. Parks and Ellen are my gggrandparents.
Thanks for any help.

Claibourn and Chism decendents, poss. the Lauderdale Co. Tn. Chism
line-Chism/Lockard (Ledbetter, widow of a Lockard) married in Lauderdale Co.
1840's. any help appreciated-Thanks Evelyn
Where was your mother from? Do you know where her parents came
from?----any dates or places?
All I know about my gggrandfather as of now is his name and that he went
from Tennessee, probably Overton Co., to McLean Co. Ill in the mid-1800s.

My mothers maiden name is Chism also. Her name was Ardeth Chism whose parents are Dollie Bryant and John Chism. I don't know much on John except that my mother is his daughter and they had a son named Dale Chism. Any info on the Chism's would be appreciated.
That is a fascinating story.
There are so many mystery stories.
I think I have saved some of your email in the past, just in case I came
across the names you said.
Thanks again for your reply!

Hi Debbie,
Mr.Chism sent me a list of slave names on an estate sale for Suprey Chisholm
in 1834 and my great great grandfather and his two brothers were listed on
it. After the death of Suprey I don't know who brought them and then took
them to Florida. It was about ten names on the estate sale that were listed
on the 1870 census for Gainesville, Florida. In 1867 my family brought almost
seven hundred acres of land, and they brought it with 35,000lbs of sea islan
cotton, now this is another question that needs answering. where did they get
so much cotton two years after emancipation. Everytime one question is
answered another one comes along:)

Thank you very much, but I have The Chisz!
A family member bought it a while back.
I couldn't connect with it when I first dug into it a couple years ago,
but now I must take a second look.
I took advice of a Chism on this List and called the author of The Chisz.
He is the one who thinks it is possible that my ancestor is the same as
his and just fibbed about his background and ran off from Tenn. to
Illinois in the late 1840s!
I don't know anything about proving anything like that! For a start, I
just thought I would ask those on the list who might come from that line
what they know....someone that John D. Chism who wrote The Chisz doesn't
know about. (and he is trying to find out about this also)
I found my Jesse Chism (I think it was him) in Overton Co., Tenn. in the
1840s working as a field hand for Mounce Gore, who happens to be one of
Al Gore's ancestors.
Then someone told me that the Gores, like many of the Chisms & esp. Blind
John's people, came from South Carolina. So maybe I need to follow the
Gores! (HaHa!)....This Mounce may have given a job to
another S. Carolinian in trouble. Just a theory.
Thanks again, Antoinette. Let me know if you uncover anything.
Debby J.
Hi Debby,
Do you have the Book the Chiz, History of the Chisholme/Chism clan? I have it
would you like for me to look something up for you?
Antoinette J. Russell
O Lord my god , in thee I put my trust....... Psalm 7:1
I'd like to find some descendents of Blind John Chism of S. Carolina &
Alabama, & Tennessee.
According to conjecture of another of Blind John's descendents, my
gggrandfather, Jesse, may be the same as Blind John's grandson Jesse, who
was son of William.
There is a discrepancy of 20 years in the birthday of Blind John's
grandson Jesse, and my gggrandfather Jesse, however.
The theory is that ran off from his family, or was run off----then stayed
with or close to other Chisms in White/Overton Co., Tennessee.
I have found a Jesse Chism in Overton Co. between 1843-49.
My ancestor Jesse reportedly (per obit & family stories) went from
Overton Co., Tenn. to McLean Co., Illinois, in the late 1840s.
I'm just trying to glean any information I can concerning this
possibility and would appreciate any feedback or suggestions.
Thanks for any attention! Debby (Chism) Jorgensen

Can someone tell me who Granville Chism born May 30, 1823 , his wife was
Judith Chism M.J. Chism born March 12, 1827, they are buried in MO.
I wanted to know if anyone knew who the parents were of this Granville.
Vickie
Thanks for answering!
I am definitely saving your email. Maybe nothing will come of it but it
just might.
My grandfather was also named Jesse --as well as my great great
grandfather.
But his wife, my grandmother, Ida Gilbert, was born in Union Co. Illinois
---her mother
was an Underwood who died young. My grandma could never find out
anything about
her mother's family. There are lots of Underwoods down in Alexander Co.,
Johnson Co., Union Co. & other counties in southern Illinois but I can't
find a connection.
As far as I know my gggrandfather went right from middle Tenn. to about
middle Illinois--McLean Co. where he met up with others who migrated from
his area in Tenn.
I am now wondering if there is a place connection somehow with my
grandparents, if
your Chisms lived for a time in southern Illinois!
I'll keep in touch if I ever find any of your family names also!
Debby J.
Thanks Debby, My Chism's may of been in Southern Ill, at one time, maybe
Alexandra Co. Jesse's wife was Sarah Harrison Sturdivant, born in Tuscaloosa
Co. Alabama, there was some Chism's there also, these Sturdivant's migrated
to Choctaw/Webster and Calhoun Co. Ms. my father thought his father, James
Aden Chism, may of been born in Panola Co. Ms (b. 1880) my father was an only
child, passed away 1998, so there is no one to ask my 10,000 questions--I
have a lot of decendents on the Claybourn side in Jefferson Co. Ill . I check
out all the Jesse's also, and if I find anything on yours I'll post it for
you. thanks Evelyn
