8:00 Battle of the Clans. A 2-hour look beyond the myth of the Highland
Clansman that tells the often-tragic story of this symbol of
Scotland--heroic
warrior clad in tartan kilt marching to the bagpipe. See why, 250 years ago,
Clansmen were seen as barbaric, and special laws were enacted prohibiting
the
wearing of tartans, playing of pipes, and even speaking Gaelic! CC [TV G]

Dear Bob,
Just reviewed my original message to which you replied. I did not mean to infer that ALL the northern and Canadian and Nova Scotian Chisholms descended from those rounded up. Certainly, several had migrated several years prior. MOST of the clansmen rounded up following Culloden were, for some reason, sent to those areas also...

Dear Bob,
As I said, Richard Cheeseholm (Cheseholm, Chesholm) was reported to have been a cousin to the last of the Stewart Kings of England. He was born either in Invernesshire, or London--not sure on that. He was of the Scottish Clan. The de Chesholms were of the border clans originally, but gradually worked their way up and around Inverness. Hope that clears it up.

Dear Samuel:
I have been tracing the Chism family in upper New York State. We have them going back into the 1700's and possibly late 1600's. Your historical perspective is interesting since we seem to see the family coming from Scotland. Could the Chism family that we are tracing be decendents from the same folks that you refer? Rotterdam and Schenectady in up-state NY are where these families settled, and much of the vital statistics are on file in Albany. We have located grave sites which have been invaluable to our research as well.
After battling with a server that seemed to bounce a good lot of messages
sent, I am returning to my old server. If any of you have tried to contact
me and I have not responded, that might be why.
If you need to contact me personally, you may address it to
funyfarm(a)hit.net
On another note, in light of events of this week, if any of you have a
memorial page or know of one that you would like to share, please let me
know. I will be making a page of links for memorial/tribute pages and
putting them up on my site.
Or if you have any brief thoughts or words that you would like to share
with others on the page, they would be considered as well. Those too should
be addressed to me at funyfarm(a)hit.net

Sorry...Hit the wrong button before I was through....
I mistakenly referred to your father as your husband. Didn't mean to, although in backcountry America, That also Happened. In the Chisholms, my Grandfather's mother was my Great-Grandfathers first wife. Following her death, my GGrandfather married his first wife's sister in law, who just happened to be his first cousin. They had one child. This child was not only my grandfathers half sister, but she was also his cousin............(could have been worse)
Most of the Southern/Southeastern/Western Chisholms are descendants of Richard Cheeseholm (ca 1640) The Northern and Canadian Chisholms are descendants of the Clansmen that were rounded up following the Battle of Culloden and sent to this continent as indentured servants (slaves) of the tories.
Same blood lines/clan.
If I can be of further service, do not hesitate to let me know..........

Since you were replying to Traci's posting, I don't know how I received this message in my e-mail, but I will try to help.
There is always the possibility that there are some offspring of the Chisholm/Chism/Chisoms (etc. etc) and their slaves. However, to my knowledge, there were more and many Chisholms (etc, etc) that actually married the Indian maids they found on the frontier. One, known to all in the family as "Red Buck" Chisholm, is said to have had as many as eleven children by his three Caucasian wives, and as many as seventeen or more by "various Indian Maidens." While I have an aunt who strictly refuses to recognize that these things were done by anyone in "my family line," It does not change the fact that it happened. After all, there "werent to much to choose from on the prary." I would say that if your husband claims American Indian ancestry, he is probably correct.
I hope this helps....

Kim,
Good to hear from you. We have extensive information on John Harold Chism since we were not sure if he was a relative to our line of investigation. We studied much in Albany, Salt Lake City, and Schenecady. Mary J. Van Pattan is the mother of your spouse John Harold. We know that his father was William Henry Chism and mother was Anna Maria Case. We suspect that William's father and mother, Peter and Hannah Smith, is where the lines come together with Moses Chism (our line) and William Chism, your husband's line, being brothers. We will be home in FL in another week, and I will be able to furnish more information. It appears that you have good forward information, and if you can substantiate going back to Peter Chism, then this would be helpful. I suspect that I may indeed have some vital statistics and need to check this out.
Thank you for your assistance. Keep up the good work, and we can exchange more information shortly. Bob

Terry,
I have done some extensive research in New York State. Many of the Chism family seemed to originate in Schenectady and Albany Counties early in the 1700's from what I can discover. Could your ancestors have originated there and migrated to IN? We have both William and Edward Chism in our line.
