Dear List:
I am in search of Bridget who was owned by David Chisholme, Jr., originally
of Louisa County, Virginia. Between 1809 and 1810 David took his slaves to
Chester, South Carolina. I was wondering if any one has come across this
great great great grandmother of mine while doing research on this family. If
so I would really appreciate any help even if its putting me on the right
track as where records might be in those counties. thank you in advance.

Searching for Chisholms in Louisa County, Virginia, Chester, South Carolina,
Gainesville, Tampa, Ocala Florida, and any where I may have missed.
Antoinette
This is a neat site. It has digitized maps, photographs, documents, and
has searchable databases. It now has a Land Records searchable database.

Hello Freda! Thanks for sending me that email about your connection with
Blind John. I had not at first seen what you had written!
I have read of him (blind John)in THE CHISZ, a copy of which I have, and
also in old Chism Monographs when I belonged to the Chism Family
Association. (I may belong NOW but I sporadically forget to send in my
dues!) I don't find any connection with Blind John and my Jesse and his
purported father John, but I still like to keep that line in mind, to
help keep me from being mixed up with it and my own genealogy. And also,
perhaps we will find, after all, that Blind John had a son Jesse, but I
have never heard of that.
It does seem that they were in generally the same area at much the same
time, however.
Recently I felt, from reading discovered material in the E. Tenn. Tech.
Library, that my Jesse may be connected with the Lawrence Breed Chism
family, son of William Gum Chism, who was, in turn, son of William Belew
Chism and Phoebe Breed Chism.
Thanks alot for answering my thoughts on Blind John. I appreciate you
and others (by the way, also in answer to an email earlier from, I think,
you----I don't reply either to anyone when I don't know the answer---and
I didn't mean to appear to "scold" the List for not answering me! I
didn't remember getting any message saying I had subscribed again (but
maybe I did and forgot!) and I was worried that I had not done it right!
Thanks again, Deborah Jorgensen
Thanks for Tom Land for providing some information on Chisholms/Chisms.
My gggrandfather is Jesse Chism who lived in Overton Co., Tenn. born
1822, & left Tenn. for Illinois late 1840s. I found him working as a
farm hand in Overton Co. Family reports say his name was John Chism,
that he fought in the Rev. War (I question that)---that he was born in
Scotland (also questionable-----perhaps was even S.C.)---and his wife was
of German descent, born in Virginia. I have THE CHISZ and have not
found him definitely in that ----and I don't think he was Blind John--no
mention of Blind John having a son Jesse in anything I have ever read.
Also Jesse was landless, & not mentioned in any will or deed that I have
ever found in CHISZ or Tennessee or other Chism genealogies I have read
in the Chism Family Association Monograph. So now I will be looking
through the material provided on the List and saving it to see if it fits
in later as a possible clue to Jesse's father.
Thanks! Deborah Jorgensen

Not proud of the fact about the slaves but I had no control over the matter

Freda & all,
Per discussion of Blind John I am copying my notes filed for him. These
are items I have found during research that may or may not apply to
Blind John. Lines ending in "TL" are notes to myself, speculation, etc.
I suspect some of these entries may not apply to this person, list
comments welcome. CHISM is my wife's line & I do some research, not
extensively, relying mostly on "The Chisz" and this fine list.

In doing some on-line research I came across this info. As movement of
Chism's to SC was a recent topic of the list I thought I would pass this
on. Sorry I didn't note where I found it but it should be easily
verifiable in the library census files. It may look better if you copy
it into a text editor program & even the lines.

father: Benjamin
Siblings: Marion chism, Benjamin. Frank, John Pryor. There were no dates for
any of this information. Does an of this sound familiar?

Hi Freda,
My connection to this family is that David Chisholme, Jr., owned my Great
great great-grandmother and her children, But I do have the book written
about the family called the Chiz, The History of the Chisholme/Chism family
by John D. Chism. Is there anything that you may need from this book?
Antoinette
Antoinette,
Could you please check in the book The Chiz for the Chism surname that might
have been in Augusta County or Stafford County - both counties in Virginia.
My husband's gr.gr.grandfather was Franklin Chism - born 1807 - supposedly
in one or the other county. He made two trips to Ohio with a brother (name
unknown) before settling there in 1835. We have no idea who his parents
might have been - also do not know if there were other siblings other than
the brother originally mentioned.
Have plenty of info on Franklin once he settled in Ohio - we are just unable
to find his parents/siblings.
Have you heard/found any listings for Chism in those counties in Virginia?
His marriage record spells it CHISM, however his death record spells it
CHISUM.
Thanks so much.
