Hey Listers:
I've been doing just a little bit of homework and I can follow Phil
Routon's synopsis of the John Chism vs. James as the spouse of Mary
Howard. I am seeking slaves in the CHISM & HOWARD families. I know from
the will of Jacob Chism [this is on my website noted below under
marriage, census and cemetery data] who married Elizabeth Howard -- &
that he owned several of my ancestors. I thought that a clue to tracing
them would be to review the will of Jacob's father... James? or is it
John? Anyway, it is a bit confusing to me.
For Doug Moore: I found the following mention that might be of interest
if he hasn't seen it already. I recently compiled a list of KY
resources and have been extracting bits of information. If anyone is
interested in my listing of resource materials, please let me. I went
through a listing a materials via the MidContintent Public Library in
Independence MO and found a number of will books etc.,listed. I also
ordered some documents from Sandi Gorin which I hope prove to be equally
helpful.
"Power of attorney 30 May, 1811 from Benjamin Coyle of Warren Co,
Tennesse to Jacob Chism of Barren Co., to transfer 200 acres in Barren
Co on water of Mill Creek of Big Barren [River] that Coyle obtain by
certificate and sold to Jacob Chism for value received, near Robert
Kirbey and Nathan Breed. Wit: Jas Harrison, James Chism, /s/ Benjamin
Coyle, [s] Ackn & rec., 17 June 1811 [or 1813] by James Harrison and
James Chism. /s/ W. Logan [B: 145]
I have attached a list of documents that I have been mulling through. I
imagine that many of you have already gone through most of these. But
before I expend alot of time and energy going through these or looking
for them -- I thought I ask for some feedback.
I am most interested in documents I saw available via the online
catalogue at the Virginia Archives (library) in Richmond. Can you tell
me if any of you have reviewed any of these documents or if you have
copies of any such materials. I plan to send for these items via
interlibrary loan with the help of some friends who are in VA. Again, I
am looking for slave data that may give some clues to transactions and
gifts of slaves in the Chism, Howard, Gist, Letchworth families. Looks
like I should be checking out the Harrison's too? However, my ancestors
came to Cooper/Morgan Co MO with the CHISMS, HOWARD, LETCHWORTH and GIST
clan.

Thanks Freda ---I am just trying to see if my line might be an offshoot
from this line or have some connection. My Chism family has, by word of
mouth, my ggggrandfather John Chism, who lived in Overton Co. Tenn., died
ca. 1838 or 9. ( of course Overton Co back then may be another county
now) ----his wife's name was unknown & she died in 1848.
Children were Jesse (my gggrandfather who went to Ill. in 1848 after his
mother died) and his siblings Richard, John, James, Nancy. Tradition
has it that John & James disappeared during the Civil War, Nancy stayed
in Tenn. & married, and Richard, wife & family unknown & whereabouts
after 1850 unknown but he kept in touch with Jesse in Ill. for a while.
Been searching for this Chism family for ages --now trying to re-look at
other known Chism families. Where is Walling, Tenn.? Deborah J.

Deborah,
My line is Blind John. In the applications for a revolutionary pension it is stated that John died in AL, June 15, 1829. Sarah died in White Co., TN, August 30, 1848.
His file is quite extensive because it was denied. First, there was lack of evidence of marriage and then no record of eye witnesses. The family had an attorney write letters. John Jr gave testimoney, Sarah and Nancy Fisher (last living child).
Their marriage is listed as before 1774. A Lewis Taylor swore that he was at their wedding in Spartenburg Dist, SC, and that he served with him in the revolution.
Living children in 1848: Nancy Fisher, John Chisam, Rachel Riddelles, Polly Pullern, Betsy Burnsides, Sarah Chisam, & Frances Hately.
After Sarah's death, her daughter, Nancy Fisher applied for a pension.
Freda
Is any Chism researcher on the list researching "Blind" John Chisam,
"Hickory Nut Mountain" John Chisam, Preston Chisam, Overton D. Chisam,
John Chisam, Jr. and other children or possible of "Hickory Nut Mountain"
John Chisam who was born in 1780, S.C. and died in Walling, Tn., or so
my information goes?
Deborah Jorgensen
I found a Jesse Walling somewhere in Illinois, I think, and married to
someone---I think I was looking for another line (not Chisms) and saw
that name --and remembered it because I had a memory also that Wallings
and Chisms were connected in some way.
I may not be able to trace where I find that, and that Jesse Walling may
not be connected to you ---but I will try to find it ---will save your
email address-----life is kind of busy for me right now so not sure when
I can check (or if I will be successful). I think it would be in the
mid 1800s. Deborah Jorgensen

Looking for the Chisum/Chism line John Walling and a chism. His brother
