I just got this message today, so please don't think I was ignoring you.
I am still fighting my mail with problems that are going on with my server.
I tried doing a couple of searches while ago, and I think it's all
working now. They may still be working a few things out with the server.

I'm passing this bit along in hope of helping a very nice lady.

Here is what she said:
All I know is that John Wesley
Knight and Martha Ellen Stewart m. 1869 in Ripley,TN. Her parents were
John Stewart and ? Chism, Chisom,or Chisolm. I have no more info.I look
through everything pertaining to Chism to see if I can find a female
that m. a Stewart. That's all I know to do.Thank you so much for taking
an interest in me.
This really is a neat page. You may ask what does this have to do with
genealogy? Well, it helps gain insight to how our ancestors lived, and there
are links here that do have some surnames and family history information as
well.
Enjoy,

Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned
temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It
will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased
performance and reliability for future growth.
In the meantime, please take time to visit RootsWeb.com's sister sites --
Ancestry.com and FamilyHistory.com -- where you will find additional tools
such as message boards, communities, and databases to help you in the search
for your ancestors.
Thank you for your patience.
I have not heard of any of my Chisms owning slaves but I sure can't find
any of the Chisms that are mine from the 1800s, except a gggrandfather
Jesse Chism who ended up in Illinois in 1847 0r 8. Jesse was born in
1822, maybe in middle Tenn.
However having read the List with request by Antoinette Russell, now I
am wondering if the reason I can't find them is that I am looking in the
wrong places, and that they were slaves themselves. If anyone of African
American descent knows of any Chisms who were a family for a while and
named John -the father & children: John, Jesse, James, Richard, and
Nancy, I would appreciate it if you would let me know. I don't know the
mother's name but she was born in Virginia. The rest of the family
seemed to be in Tennessee in the mid 1800s and two of the children
disappeared during the Civil War---John and James.
This request on the Chism List also makes me realize that I do have
another branch of the family who had slaves: the Gilberts. I think I
should share the names of the ones I know on the List I belong to for the
Gilberts in case anyone would be interested. So thank you, Antoinette!
I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful to you, though. Deborah Jorgensen

Dear List:
I am hoping that someone belonging to this family may see this message and
respond, this family has been very elusive and I have been beating my head
against a hard wall for a long time.
My family originated in Virginia, My great great grandmother was a slave by
the name of Bridget and she was owned by David Chisholme, Jr., in 1809 David
and his slaves moved to Chester, South Carolina, my great great grandfather
Ned Chisholm was born in South Carolina in 1814, he was listed on the estate
sale of Suprey Chisholme in 1834 and he was found again in 1855 in Alachua
County, Florida, In 1867 they bought land in Newnans Lake, which is the rural
area of Gainesville.
Ned is listed on the 1870 census with wife Julia, and his children:
Alexander, Taylor, Daniel (grandson) Thomas (my great grandfather) Henry F.,
John W.. If this sounds familiar please email me. I have more information to
share.
I am looking forward to hearing from all Chisholms who have their roots
from Chester, South Carolina and Gainesville, Florida.
thank you,
Antoinette Russell
I knew I had something somewhere. I found a page I copied out of a book
called "Kansas 1870" by Ronald Vern Jackson.
It lists:
Julia A. Chisham, Atchison County, pg. 324, Mount Pleasant (City)
Martha Chisham, Leavenworth County, pg 181, Easton Township
Benjamin Chism, Leavenworth County, pg. 187, Fairmont Township
James Chism, Atchison County, pg. 241, 4 W. of Atchison
Jerry Chism, Leavenworth County, pg. 332, 2 W. of Leavenworth

Got this today, and it was so cute I thought I'd pass it on. It made me

Rules For Genealogy
-------------------
1. Treat the brothers and sisters of your ancestors as equals ... even if
some of them were in jail.
2. Death certificates are rarely filled in by the person who died.
3. When visiting a funeral home, wear old clothes, no make-up, and look
like you have about a week to live ... the funeral director will give you
anything you ask if he thinks you may be a customer soon.
4. The cemetery where your ancestor was buried does not have perpetual
care, has no office, is accessible only by a muddy road, has snakes, tall
grass, and lots of bugs ... and many of the old gravestones are in broken
pieces, stacked in a corner under a pile of dirt.
5. A Social Security form SS-5 is better than a birth certificate because
few people had anything to do with the information on their own birth
certificate.
6. The application for a death certificate you want insists that you
provide the maiden name of the deceased's mother ... which is exactly what
you don't know and is the reason you are trying to get the death certificate
in the first place.
7. If you call Social Security and ask where to write for a birth
certificate, tell them it is for yourself ... they won't help you if you
say you want one for your great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather
who died in 1642.
8. When you contact the state vital statistics office in your home state
and ask if they are "on-line" and they respond, "on what?," you may have a
problem.
9. A census record showing all twelve children in a family proves only that
your ancestors did not believe in birth control.
10. Work from the known to the unknown. In other words, just because your
name is Washington doesn't mean you are related to George.
11. With any luck, some of the people in your family could read and write
... and may have left something written about themselves.
12. It ain't history until it's written down. (See #19)
13. A genealogist needs to be a detective. Just give me the facts, ma'am.
14. Always interview brothers and sisters together in the same room. Since
they can't agree on anything about the family tree, it makes for great fun
to see who throws the first punch.
15. The genealogy book you just found out about went out of print last
week.
16. A good genealogical event is learning that your parents were married.
17. Finding the place a person lived may lead to finding that person's
arrest record.
18. It's really quite simple. First you start with yourself, then your
parents, then your grandparents ... then you QUIT ... and start teaching
classes in genealogy.
19. If it's not written down, it ain't history yet. (See #12)
20. In spite of MTV, computer games, and skate boards, there's always a
chance that they might be interested later....

Surname: Chisholm
-------------------------
I am trying to find information on a William H. Chisholm who was listed
on the 1870 Census for Colbert Co. He later was in TN. If anyone has any
information on him, I would appreciate your help. Thanks, Joyce
I am looking for a family unit here:
John, the father
Richard, John, James, Jesse, Nancy - his children
mother unknown- born in Virginia, according to Jesse's 1880 census
record.
Jesse was my great grandfather, born 1822, moved to McLean Co. Ill.
ca.1848 from Tennessee, where he was reportedly born, to McLean County,
Illinois, and died there in 1898. He married Artimza Brown, dau. of
Zachariah and Elizabeth (Jones)Brown in Illinois but Artimza and her
parents had moved to Illinois also, at an earlier than Jesse.
I have found several John Chisms, a James Chism or two, and one Richard
Chism,
but so far nothing at all that can connect those 6 people as a family.
They may have been part of a Chism family getting to America at a later
date than some Chisms.
By family word of mouth, the father John Chism fought in the
Revolutionary War.
I would be most grateful for any information. Deborah Jorgensen
Sheridan,
Just so you know, my ancestors were slaves in the CHISM, HOWARD and TUTT
families -- so I am always looking for connections. Interestingly enough
-- my great great grandfather was enumerated as a Marion Ross in 1870
with his mother Mary Ann -- and father Marion Ross in 1870. Later my
gggrandfather took the surname of WILSON. In 1870 Marion's family lived
next door to Black CHISMS. Marion's mother I recently discovered was
owned by Jacob CHISM. Upon his death -- Mary Ann was bequeathed to
Jacob's daughter Elizabeth -- who later married Lot Howard. The
Thurstons are mentioned on some estate document that I have -- so I
thought you might be interested in reviewing these. After Jacob Chism
and his wife Priscilla died -- their children were involved in a lawsuit
against each other to partition the value of some slaves. I have been
wondering what the exact tie the ROSS family has to the CHISMS... as
James Ross in noted in the estate papers. I have put them on my
African Americans in Missouri website with the links below.
Did a little surfing around... as I am also curious about Thurston, Ross
and Meador connections. Here's what I've got. I checked out the 1860
cenus online:

1859
William H. 1834
Thomas W. 1836
Harriet 1839
Mary Josephine 1841
(I believe you are correct that Francis, William and Henry are siblings
-- maybe they were William Henry and Thomas William?)
Joel has a brother names Jonas Meador (their father was William Meador
b. 1770)
don't know the wife for Jonas: but here are the children:
William
Joseph
Trisferena (?sp)
Sally
Lydia (married John Watt)

>From the census in 1860: #349 -- It looks to me like William Thurston
(38 born in SC) remarried after Priscilla Jane Chism died to a Sarah? In
1860 William and his new wife Sarah are enumerated with George Thurston
(8) and there are new siblings Lucy J. (2); Amanda (6/12) and a John
Sharp of 36 from Ohio.
Next door, #348 is Henry Thurston (30 born in SC) and his wife Mary (27
born in VA) -- two children Edward (5) and Beverly S. (2); both born in
MO.
Looks like brothers William and Henry lived next door to each other.
In the Haw Creek Twp in 1860
I also found two other Thurston families from South Carolina
Street (72); wife Sarah (52); Susan (22 - MO) and Sarah (19 -- M0) and a
Rich McCoy (20 born in IN)
Maybe this younger Sarah married Peter Taylor?
Beverly Thurston, 66 SC
Elias E. 40 SC
Mark ?) 34 SC
Black, Mary 14 MO
They live down the road from Lot Howard who married Elizabeth Chism
Elizabeth's sister is Priscilla Jane Chism who married William Thurston
in her 2nd marriage.
In the estate of Jacob Chism (father to Elizabeth and Priscilla) George
Thurston is listed. I've been wondering for a long time -- just who the
heck he is... now I know thanks to your request. I also now know how
John McClanahan is connected to the family -- he was Priscilla's first
husband. Their children were heirs in the Jacob Chism estate noted

AFRICAN AMERICAN ROSS
Some time ago, I found in a Morgan Co History book -- a profile of an
African American couple - James P. Ross and Jane Meadows (which could
have been Meador or Meadors?) -- the only one listed (that I found in
the book)
For those you who can follow my very complicated research for African
Americans -- please note the following a notice the similarity of
surnames which correlates to the families noted above; as I mentioned, I
have been looking for ROSS ties.
James P. Ross (b. 1855 . 1928) and Jane Meadows Ross, b. 1857-d 1936 had
seven children. Maggie Ross McMclanahan, b. 1876. 1952; Lawrence Ross,
b. 1877-d. 1927; Wlater A. Ross, b. Jan 5, 1879-d. Jan. 13, 1962, David
P. Ross (dates unknown); Alexander Wendell Ross (dates unknown); Nanny
Ross, b. Nov. 23, 1888, Versailles; Josephine Ross (Young), b. Nov. 3,
1889, Fulton. James P. Ross and Jane Meadows had 14 grandchildren.
Nanny Ross married Beverly Hunter. b. Jan 18, 1883-d. April 7, 1958 on
June 17, 1909. They had one son, Beverly Lavett, b. Aug. 9, 1911-d.
Sept. 2, 1960.
The Ross names came from Judge James P. Ross, a white man who raised
Nanny's father, his mother and sister in his home. Judge Ross gave the
land for the site of the Second Baptist Church and Booker T. Washington
School,. South Monroe St., Versailles, MO
Nanny worked as a waitress at the old martin Hotel for many years and
later was matron at the public restrooms in the Morgan County
Courthouse. Beverly Hunter worked for John Hannay, publisher of the
Wersailles Leader, a Democratic publication, when the paper was printed
in teh east basement of the courthouse. The presses were run by
gasoline engines that could be heard by people walking across the
courthouse lawn. Beverly started woking as a printer's devil and worked
up to the position of printer and press operator. He retired from the
Statesman in 1944.

Taken from the same book:
John B. Logan and Jacob Chism constituted Big Lick Baptist Church in
Cooper Co. Missouri. Both came from the Hopeful Church in the Green River
Association. They were nephew and brother-in-law of Elder John Mulkey of the
Holston Association of Tenn.
Jackie
According to the book Pioneer Baptistt Church Records of Ky. and Tenn.:
Elija Chism was a messenger in 1798 from the Powels Valley Baptist Churchto
the Holstein Association. Elija Chism appears with the Roaring River Church
in 1803.
Jackie
Traci,
I can't figure it out. I was hoping someone would know. I got the book of
the church's history hoping I'd find more on Chisham/Chism.
My gr gr grandparents (Thomas and Julia Chisham), were members of that
church back when it was new. Their name was Chisham, but in the church
records it was spelled Chism. So I'm wondering if Howard and some of the
other Chism's were all related. I can't help but think that they were.
My gr gr grandmother Julia's brother Cincinnatus Stribling was one of
the charter members of the church. The book is really neat as it does have
some pictures of the DeHoney family in it, them all being kin of some sort.
Julia's mother was a DeHoney, and there is a bit on them as they were early
members of the church.
Something else too, is Alvan Brooking was also a charter member, and in
his will info, it says that Edward West ( Julia's stepbrother), and Howard
Chism made bond.
Did I send you that will info? I cant' remember. I got it as an
attachment.
