Hello list,
I am looking for some elusive relatives and that I have been searching for
them for quite sometime. My Chisholms are African Americans and they were
once owned by David Chisholme Jr, of Chester, South Carolina. I first located
them on an estate sale of Suprey Chisholme in February of 1834, then they
were in Gainesville, Florida by 1855. and they bought 681 acres of land in
1867. I have some administration papers and wedding dates but not much else
to go on. I believe that there were a lot of Chisholms on that land and quite
a few of them related to each other. These are the names who were on the
census for 1870. My great great grand father Edward, nicked name Ned and his
brother Dudley. His brother William was not mentioned on the census.
My great grand father Thomas and great grand mother Sarah. Butler, Bimus,
Samuel, Major, Elsy (female) Napoleon.
My great grand father Tom Chisholm had 15 children, ten by his first wife
Sara and five by his second wife Mary Elizabeth nee Williams. I am searching
for any decendants of this family.
Some of this family migrated to Tampa, Ocala,Plataka, Florida and
Wilmington, Delaware, New York City. I would really like to hear from any one
who might have any information. thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Antoinette Russell (seventh generation Chisholm)
Hey Listers,
Well as promised I am finally getting around to posting this estate
information on Jacob Chism. First I must thank Carolyn Gibbons and her
sister Anne Silar for finding these documents at the Salt Lake City
archives... and sending them to me. A large package of documents came in
the mail from sisters and they have been following my postings as I
search for enslaved ancestors in Missouri. Carolyn and I have been
emailing for some time..and slowly the surnames of Chism, Howard, Tutt
etc., have emerged in my research.
It has taken me weeks to get the courage to transcribe these documents.
When I first got the package in the mail and saw that slaves would be
sold for 1/4 of a 1/9 part interest it made me physically sick. It was
and has been very hard to transcribe so many documents with people
listed as inventory and chattle. So with with a fresh (and large) glass
of vodka and lemonade and a new cd playing loudly, I bit my lip, fought
back the tears and forced myself to type.
Below is the beginning of another journey that may help me find other
enslaved ancestors -- Emperor and Tom. At least now I know from the
Will of Jacob Chism (Ann transcribed the will and I've uploaded the will
to my website at: <http://www.missouri-slave-data.org/jchism.jpg>) that
my gggreat grandmother Mary Ann Howard did indeed have siblings. Now the
challenge will be to track the households of Howard Chism, Jacob C.
Chism... and literally all the Chism siblings who owned slaves. In
particular... I believe Jacob Chism and his brothers James Thomas Chism,
Phebe Breed Chism, George Chism, William Belew Chism, Michael Chism,
Kesiah Chism, Elizabeth Chism and John Chism may have all owned slaves
in Barren County, KY -- before they migrated to Missouri. The 1810
Monroe County census notes the following Chims: George, James, Michael
and William. It appears that only Jacob and his brother Michael Chism
were the only two siblings from the family of Mary Howard and James
Chism who came to Missouri. Mary Howard Chism and her husband James
Chism both died in Monroe County, KY. So my next big step would be to
find a will and probate information on James Chism... which may give
some direction as to how Jacob and his other siblings came to own a
number of slaves. Looks like I need to track down a Barren County
probate records book etc. If you can help me with any of the families
noted above, I would be most appreciative.
thanks again to Ann and Carolyn for it is the kindness of people like
them... that assure me that unselfish humanitarism exists in
abundance... if only we seek it.

P.S. I will also post the estate record to my site. Awhile back I
pulled inventory and settlement records for Cooper Co... some of these
families may be yours. I'll post the slave entries piece by piece. If
you need additional information on the ones I post.. just let me know.

Ok kids, I did it! I started another list! This list is with e groups and
is an open forum list for family and friends. It's called
FunyfarmsFamilyHearth. It basically is a "by invitation" list, but I welcome
anyone to join that wants to just share, chit chat, and have fun. And
speaking of chit chat, we have our own chat room as well.
All I ask, is that there is no profanity, vulgarity, or slamming etc.
This is a clean, family oriented list for people to discuss any topic they
wish, or just say howdy.
I love my RootsWeb lists, and would not trade them for all the tea in
China, but they are oriented to a single topic. With the e groups list, we
can talk about anything we want, as long as it's clean. And those are MY
rules. If someone posts something a little out of line, I will give them ONE
warning. I don't want to be mean, but this must be something that is
appropriate for anyone, including children to view. I do have my
sensitivities too, believe it or not! If need be, I will moderate the list,
but I really don't think you all will misbehave.
We also have space on the server where we can upload files for other
members to see, and emails to this list can be sent with attachments, or
html.
Now as with any email, please keep in mind that although none of our
people would willingly, or knowingly send a virus, any time attachments go
through, please use caution.
It would be good if you are sending an attachment, to mention that you
are sending it, and what it is, so we know it really is coming from you. If
you follow what I'm saying.
Say for instance if I want to send a picture of my dog, I could tell you
all that I'm sending a pic of my dog. When it comes it should come attached
as dog.jpg or dog.bmp.
I think we can have a lot of fun with this, and this is yet another new
step for me this year. I've crossed a lot of new thresholds in the past few
months! You CAN teach an old dog new tricks! hehe.
I belong to some other e groups lists, and enjoy them a great deal. I
even have some of my weather photos up on one of the weather ones. Including
shots of the tornado that hit our home last June. Finally came to my senses
and grabbed the camera just in time to get some shots as it was lifting and
moving away. I still haven't heard the last of that one! But, that's another
story... :O).
Here's some info if you'd like to join, and also the homepage url if you
would like to just chat. You will have to become a member to chat. That's
another way of helping keep out trouble.
You are all welcome to use the chat room anytime you like. Oh and there
is also a calendar on our homepage.....can list events.....like birthdays,
<GBG>.
Here's the info you will need if you are interested, and come on in so I
don't get lonesome!

Today I'm really going to confuse you. I am also tracking the Chism,
Williams and Martin families. You will have to bear with me; because my
focus is tracking slaves; but I have put several ties together. Please
get back and me and let me know what you think. I do not find a mention
of Mahala in my notes; but I did find a Daniel Williams listed on the
Morgan Co 1850 slave schedules owning 2 slaves. On my records I see that
3 CHISM children married WILLIAMS... Howard Seth Chism to Mahala Williams on
Feb 15, 1831 in Howard Co; Sarah Chism m. John Williams and Jacob Crith
Chism m. Nancy Williams in Cooper County MO Nov. 25 1855. However, my Cooper
Co marriage records show that Howard Chism married an Emilee Cline on May
16, 1850 not Mahala. Other Chism marriages noted are Micheal Chism to
Diadian Smith 4 Feb. 1830 and Polly (Mary) Chism to Thomas Letchworth 5
April 1831.
I am interested in Mahala Williams and Howard Chism because I just figured
out this morning at 2 am... that Howard Chism inherited a slave named Hannah
from his father Jacob Chism. Hannah to my delight (I have finally found a
sibling) would be the sister of my great great great grandmother Mary Ann
Howard -- who was a slave of Elizabeth Chism and her husband Lot Howard
(owned 5 slaves in 1850). Both Hannah and Mary Ann are noted as children an
old slave Amy. I believe that the slave Rachel who was given to Polly
(Mary)Chism may have also been a child of Amy -- meaning that the 3 sisters
were all separated from each other...and enslaved in various related CHISM
households.
So again -- Howard Seth Chism and his sister Elizabeth Chism inherited
slaves from their father Jacob Chism. Elizabeth and Howard's oldest
sibling (Mary or Margaret) married a man named Thomas C. Letchworth --
and upon his death she subsequently intermarried with her cousin Nathan
B. Howard. Elizabeth, Howard and Margaret's youngest sibling Priscilla
-- married John M. McClanahan -- all owned slaves in their families --
and a number of slaves at that. (By the way -- there was a John M.
McClanahan, John M. McClanahan II (this one married Priscilla Chism) and
John M. McMcClanahan III married Nancy Anthony McClanahan. (Nancy's
father -- William C. Anthony -- who died when she was a child; she was
subsequently raised by her uncle, William's brother Anderson W. Anthony
-- whose father Lewis C. Anthony bequeathed a number of slaves upon his
death in 1850.
The Morgan Co wills and administration records show that Howard Chism
interestingly enough was the guardian over the estate of Tarlton Embry
which had 3 minor children. I believe these slaves ended up in Palestine
in Cooper Co. The Embry or Embrees owned quite a number of slaves in
Cooper Co in 1860.
In November 1840; the estate administrator finds that Margaret
Letchworth has been overpaid and she was to refund the estate $76.90.
Nathan B. Chism and his wife Martha (so I've seen her name Mary, Martha
and Margaret) receive from the estate one slave woman named Permelia and
her suckling child Betsy and $250. Margaret also received a slave named
Rachel (this could be another child of Amy's but I do not know) Margaret
received her full dower in the slaves belonging to the estate in May
1841 -- but by this time she is referred to as the late wife of Nathan
B. Chism. Jacob Chism was the guardian if the Letchworth heirs; and took
charge of the slaves belonging to the minor heirs and rented them out;
John Chism was the administrator of the Letchworth estate. The names of
the two slaves are to be rented out are listed as: Hezekiah and Samuel.
In 1841; the slaves remained in his possession and he continued to rent
them out. This is significant to me because the Morgan County Black
marriage records show that Mary Ann Howard married Samuel McClanahan on
19 august 1865. Black marriage records show that Elizabeth Chism's
slave Mary Ann.. may have very likely married a slave of her sister
Priscilla McClanahan's family named Samuel McClanahan. And Hezekiah
Letchworth married Elise McClanahan 10 March 1866. Another option; Lot
Howard's sister Melissa Ann Howard ...married a Hezekiah Hogue; Lot
Howard , Esq., acted and managed on behalf Hezekiah Hogue's estate; and
Joseph Howard was the administrator of the estate; apparently numerous
suits were made against Mr. Hogue's estate -- I wonder if the slaves
named Hezekiah and Samuel had some sort of tie to Mr. Hogue also...his
heirs were Jeremiah Jackson Hogue and Polly Jane Hogue.
Ok... so why am I doing this. My Cooper County marriage records show
that Howard Chism married an Emily Cline -- May 16, 1850; I found a bio
on Danial Cline and his wife Elizabeth Showalter -- and I wonder if
these are the relatives of Emilee or Emily? In 1850 Howard Chism owned
14 slaves; Granville Chism 4; David Hardin Chism, 3 slaves (one of these
slaves in 90 years old); John Chism 15 slaves; and Sally Ann Martin 27
slaves James McClanahan 9 slaves; Jacob C. Letchworth 1 slave; John
Longdon Chism 7 slaves to site only a few.
Now here is the MARTIN tie...
Also I have a will of Issac Martin (in 1850 he owned 11 slaves) --
leaves Elizabeth Smith inherits five slaves and the land upon which (his
wife's brother) Thomas B. Smith lives; Issac's brothers are noted as Hudlet
and William H., and John F., and his wife Mary Smith Martin Walker. His
wife Mary Smith Martin and Anthony S. Walker are the executors of his will;
Mary later married Anthony S. Walker; Mary's father was Daniel Smith; his
children were James D., Thomas B; and daughters Unity Talbot, Polly Martin,
and Dradoni Chism (Her name is spelled a couple ways Diadian or Didamy she
married Micheal Chism on Feb. 4, 1830; brother of Elizabeth Chism et. al);
another daughter Nancy Ogle married David Ogle.) In Issac's will; he leaves
Elizabeth 5 slaves; Daniel, Noah, Achilles, Caroline and Mary; -- later in
his will he says: "given my hand this 14th day of September 1850 also I will
and bequeath to each males child that is named for me in State fifty dollars
in money or forty acros of unimproved land to selected by my executor
also to Issac Martin Chism I will and bequeathe a one year old jack now
in my possession. In Mary Smith Martin Walker's will -- she leaves an
interest for each in family slaves; and Micheal Chism is one of the
several beneficiaries -- I posted this will several weeks ago). I do no
know who Issac Martin Chism is... and I think the part about naming a
child after himself is pretty interesting.
There is also an extensive will of John P. Martin who bequeathes to all
his children a number of slaves; his wife Sarah Ann Martin owned a
number of slaves in 1850.
There was also lawsuit amongst the CHISM siblings upon the death of
Jacob Chism in an effort to partition the family's slaves in 1858. This
resulted in the slaves being sold at a public auction, on the 2nd Monday
of April 1858. This is where I discovered that my family was probably
severed deeply. I will transcribed these documents and post them
separately.
For the moment, I am interested in the WILLIAMS ties as a way to track
down my enslaved descendants who married into the CHISM family. It
appears there are Thurston, Jones, Howard and McClanahan ties. I
believe there is a Thurston connection to the McClanahan family.
Beverly Thurston m. Mary McClanahan -- daughter of John McClanahan and
Nancy Anthony McClanahan. Their children were: Susan A., Priscilla I and
John McClanahan and George Thurston son of Jane Thurston are mentioned
in Jacob Chism's will probated in 1858.
Sorry this is so incredibly confusing....

Evening,
I'm trying to get caught up on all my mail, but before I forget I want
to
ask something. Does anyone know anything more about the Elizabeth Beckham
that married Daniel Chisham? They are listed as the parents of William W.
Chisham in his bio.
Is it possible that this Daniel Chisham is the same person as
Benjamin???
In William's bio it says that Elizabeth Beckham Chisham was born in 1775,
and died June 21, 1862.
Now this is what is really weird. These are the same dates for
Benjamin's
wife Elizabeth. So, what is the deal here? Are Daniel and Benjamin, one and
the same?
It says in 1831 they moved to Orange County, Indiana. Interestingly
enough, Benjamin and Elizabeth show up on the census beginning in 1840, but
no Daniel.
Benjamin and Elizabeth were both born in Virginia.
And it gets even better! Daniel Chisham (William's father), was born
February 3, 1777, and died September 30, 1858, in Orange county, Indiana.
Amazing!!! The church records on Benjamin say he was born in 1777 and
died in Septmeber of 1858, in Orange county, Indiana!!!
I knew something had been bugging me about these guys, but why this
never
clicked before I have no clue.
I have seen variations on the spelling of Benjamin's last name, including
Chism.
Somebody give me some feedback please!!! LOL!
May you be blessed,

Oh my goodness! I think I may have found, or gotten closer to finding, my
gr gr gr grandfather! I found the online 1810 Jessamine county, Kentucky
census images. That is where he was born in 1812. There are two Chisham's
listed. A Benjamin, and a Thomas!!! I am sure one of these have to be my gr
gr grandfather Thomas's father!
What I need is a form that you fill out census information on. I know on
my old computer I had run across a place that had printable forms for the
old census records, so you could just fill in the spots. Does anyone know
where I can find these? It sure would come in handy.

Hello, does anyone know of a George Washington Childers?
I finally recieved the will of Elisha CHism and he named his wife Wenny Chism as executor and he also mentioned a son named George WAshington Childers? He must have been a stepson? He left him a roan colt?
Got some information from a sister. She had written to this church in
Jackson County, Missouri to ask about records of our great great
grandparents. The following information is what they sent her. At one time
it was called the Westfork Baptist Church.
Julia Chism joined 8/31/1843 Dismissed by letter 1850.
Thomas D. Chism joined 1842
Mary Ann joined 1852, died November 1853
Sarah Chism joined December 1852
Howard Chism received letter March 18, 1852 ( I gotta check this date and
make sure I got the right year).
Now Thomas and Julia were our great great grandparents. Here their name
is spelled Chism, but it actually was Chisham.
I still haven't found out who Thomas's parents were. His mother was a
Dinwiddie, that we do know. And one of Thomas Dinwiddies daughters was named
Mary. But whether or not this Mary is her I have no clue.
Anyway thought I would run this by you all and see if any of these looked
familiar to anybody?? I don't know who the others listed are either, but
believe them to be related in some way.

I hope this finds you all well. If you don't mind, I thought I'd take a

This one is about me and my family, so if you'd kind of like to see who's

I must warn you, there are a lot of graphics on the page, after this many

Taken from the Chiz, Chisholme family History by John d. Chism
A note from the author: for this man (John Chisum) to have had twenty-two
children as reported in certain published research, and for him to have named
only one son and law and his wife in his will puts forth some thought
provoking questions. Did this man actually father twenty-two children? Did
the author or authors of such material have the necessary facts before such
works were published? one of the most remarkable feature in tracing these two
families through Virginia from 1716-1800 is the fact that their blood
clusters never merged or occupied the same county at the same time. even
though both families were quite large and occupied only one county, Halifax,
in which both families had members to pass through leaving records. This is
not to say that it never happened more often. It was just never found. the
story however after 1800 is different I hope that this information will
help someone.
