Your query about a George W. Chisum, sparked my interest. My husband's mother
was a Chism-
My husband is descended from George Washington Chism--born 1798 in Kentucky
and married to Eleanor McPherson. They had 10 children. My husband is
descended from the oldest son--Jehu McPherson Chism. Jehu (called Jake) was
born in Kentucky in 1824--and died in 1903 in Bolivar, Denton County, TX. My
husband' s grandfather was the son of Jehu Chism and Sarah Hackworth named
Oscar Johnson Chism--born 1862 in Washington county, TX. Oscar married
Albert Sydney Johnston Jones (how about THAT name!? -she was called Sydda)
and their daughter Katie Belle was my husband's mother.
You can see how tempting it is to believe that the lines are related--but I
do not recognize the folks you named. You need to contact

She is a major researcher for this line. You may mention my name.

Recently I had a business trip to Dallas and wound up with a free
evening. It happened to be my birthday and what better to do when a
thousand miles from home than a little genealogy. My wife's
grandparents are Chism's and are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Paris,
Lamar Co., Texas, about 2+ hours drive from where I was. I drove hard,
got there about 1/2 hour before dark, easily located the cemetery - it
is huge and right by the road I drove in on - and started looking for
Chism graves. I was referred to the keepers who live onsite. They
referred me to a plot listing kept near one of the entrances. I eagerly
searched the many alphabetical pages for the Chism listings, searched
some more, found only the page before and the page after. Someone had
taken the one page I needed. Needless to say, instead of being able to
give my wife pictures of her grandparents headstones I could only give
her a picture of the cemetery at dusk. Happy birthday to me!
I guess the lesson of the story is if taking a trip like that it is best
to try to look ahead and find out as much as possible before going. I
should have visited the Genweb page and asked someone local via e-mail
about the cemetery setup and might have done so had I known in advance
I was going.
The hope is that no matter how badly you want the information contained
on that page in the book, be it in the library, cemetery or wherever,
don't rip it out and take it with you. Take a picture, copy it over,
anything but take it out of the reach of others who may depend on it
being there.
If searching for Chism, etc. in Evergreen Cemetery in Paris, Lamar Co.,
Texas be aware that the page listing those grave sites is missing from
the location book. By the way, I asked the keepers and they had no
extra copy and didn't think one existed anywhere.
If anyone wants a digital picture of the Evergreen cemetery let me know
- glad to send it attached to an e-mail.

On the 1850 census of Jackson County, Missouri it has Thomas's last name spelled as Chism. His birthplace is reported as Kentucky, and his age on the census was 38. His occupation was a farmer.
Also in the household were:
Julia (his wife); age 38; born Kentucky.
James A.; age 13; born Missouri
Margaret; age 8; born Missouri
Annette J.; age 5; born Missouri
Napoleon; age 1; born Missouri
And a George Ell Chism: age 18, farmer, and born in Missouri. Does anybody know who George was, and how he was connected to Thomas? Thomas was my gr gr grandfather.
