Hi Frederick. How long has your branch of Chisholm been in the low country of South Carolina? Would love for you to say its from the original branch, Alexander the elder, and his son in law Alexander the younger, of Charleston. But so far as I know there are no surviving Chisholm named descendents from this once mighty family. Other early Chisholms would be the Virginian Family which settled on the north side of the Savannah, in the region where Interstate 95 crosses into Georgia, most of these descendents tend to spell their names without the second "h"
These would be the only two pre rev Chisholm families I know of with documented certainty, though an Irish family came in around 1819 but settled mid state, up the north end oof Old Beaufort. Perhaps you could post your ealriest known CChisholm ancestors, giving dates and locations, and I could have a look to see if anything is known of them in Clan records.
all the best

Hi. I was doing a google search for my name and found your post here. My name is Frederick Alexander Chisholm and always think it's interesting to talk to others of the Chisholm name. My part of the Chisholm family is located in the low country of South Carolina, or what is left of them, I am the last Chisholm male and the only descendant that I know of in my family.

Hi Earl, actual I don't know what the "D" stands for with the gentleman from SC, but I am sure its not "de".
There is also the rather (in) famous John D Chisholm of Knoxville, nobodies knows what that "D" stands for, if anything, as it may have been a smokescreen put up to distance himself from his earlier life as the agent for Senator Blount in the conquest of Florida.
Chisolm and Chism spellings show a canny Scottish thrift gene, use much less paper an ink than the traditional way.The Chisolm spelling seems particularly useful in pinpointing an origin in SC/GA.
Any wish you may have to look at your last Chisholm named ancestor through the DNA project, you would need to follow that line down to the present, following only the male line with the Chism or Chisolm surname.. maybe we already have somebody, I think we have located descendants from two of Blind Johns sons within the DNA project

Robert, thanks for your quick response.
I want you to know and others working on the DNA project that I fully appreciate your and all other's time and work that has been applied to helping find our ancestor.
I did not realize there was so much chatter about our
Ancestor Adam Chisholme.
My Great-Great Grandfather was John D. Chisholm/Chism/Chisolm. I find the spelling Chisolm and Chism was more poplar than the traditional spelling. Even
though my Grandmother spelled her name Chism.
Mr John D. Chism of SC has the middle initial of "D". I would like to believe that it reflects John De Chisholme.
I have not researched how many John D. Chism/Chisholms there are along with the other lines of Chisholms.
I am very positive that the DNA project will prove to be successful but as we get older and pass on the gene pool
gets smaller. I just wished that I could have been more closer to the Chisholms.
Keep up the good work!

Hi Earl
I presume you have your information about the name Robert, from a birth record of an Adam to a Robert Chisholm, gardner in Jedburgh in the 1690's. While this record has some good reasons being being the birth record of the Adma Chisholm who was transported to Virginia, I dont think it has been proven.
The Prison record are not altogether helpful, as they put him into a locality which has still not been identified(Gladburgh) and a region which is not Roxburgh " Tindale"
Some of his prson colleagues do of course have homes located in Roxburghshire.
As far as the naming conventions go, yes a good cause for concern. One could make a case that once outside of the society, the cultural norms are less likely to be applied, though I think there is evidence of name repetitions in the subsequent generations, particularly John. Note that further evidence arising since the book "The Chisz" was published, is looking at adding some sons to that list you mentioned, with John and Thomas coming in at number one and number two

My name is truman earl cox. My Paternal grandmother was a Chism/Chisolm from MS, TN, and SC.
According to my research records we are descended from Blind
John Chism/Chisam son of David Chisholme son of Adam Chisholme. So much for that info.
I know a lot of research is converging around Adam the Jacobite. Now research shows him to be from the Borders area
and his prison record shows him to be around Roxburg, which
I would think would be a good match for the Adam from that
area. A good pattern of data.
But one thing has always bothered me and that is none of
his sons are named ROBERT and I would think being a long
way from home he would have named at least one after his father. I HAVE FOUND NO ROBERT AMONGST MY RECORDS. NOT EVEN
2ND OR THIRD GENERATIONS.
Of course I do not think we have all of their names correct. I would think there would be at least a middle name. also sometimes names are confusing.
If you look at the Scottish naming convention of:
1st son named for father's FATHER
2nd son after mother's FATHER
3RD son after named after FATHER
1ST daughter after mother's MOTHER
Adam's first son was William
second son was David
third son was Walter
I do not see a definite pattern unless other names are missing, But he does have a WALTER.
I live in Sterling, VA near where Adam was indentured but
no indentured records have been found. but he was mentioned
in the will of William Morris.
Thanks

In Mr. Chisholms book he mentions Faye, Atkins, Ark. Chism of Dallas ,
Texas, who through her mother's lineage is the 12th generation of
Phocohuntus. Faye helped provided the lineage of James and Tempy Howell,
Chism's children . James was the brother of Jesse and the second and child
of William and Ann Praytor, Chism of greenville, SC.. it is from James ther
her husband, Roy, descends.
Van Buren Chism of Benton, Arkansas who is a descendant of Robert Chism, son
of Elisha and Amelia Chism. He furnished the informaton on the decendants of
Robert Chism many who are in Ark.

Vicky,
Adam the Jacobite was from Hanover , Virgina. His grandson Adam is in Union, South Carolina. In Chester, South Carolina, there is David Chisholme, Jr, his brother Thomas, and Thomas's kids. David Chisholme jr. was a slaver he owned my family and after his death they were given to Thomas and then to Suprey Chisholme their nephew, Suprey married one of Thomas's daughter. you can also find online David chisholme Jr, selling slaves in Louisana. So there may be a Louisana connection of Chisholmes.

I see now! You are descended from Daniel Chisholm and a Nettles. His brother, William, is my ancestor. So you and I are definitely cousins! Both of us descended from John Chisholm and Elizabeth Birt.
I've done quite a bit of research on the family. My sister went to Mississippi several years ago, too, to the courthouses. She and my other sister put a gravestone on little Baby Dewey Chisholm's grave, son of Bill Chisholm, who was murdered, husband of Carrie Rushing.
Again, thank you for replying.

Descendents of John, on the SC side of the Savannah, have not built the association with Kilmorack into their trees.
This John had land not only in the current Jasper County area, but also further north in the central part of the state, around the lakes. It is expected that many of the Chisolms of this part SC will eventually lead back this origin , John, who most definitely was on the north bank of the Savannah, being a road commissioner before the revolution from the ferry crossing opp Kennedy Island, down towards Switzerland. Some evidence is being gathered to suggest that one part of the Colket thesis was correct, he was a brother of Thomas Chisolm found just across near the town of Savannah, prior to the move north to Burke Co. The pre SC origin of John Chisolm is being pointed directly towards Virginia.

Hi Deb, with a name like Walter, there is a great probability that your Chisholm ancestor has a "Borders" origin. I had a look at the Chisholm Genealogical Database and did not see anything of interest, and I did not get a result in searching the Scottish register for a possible marrriage between Elaine Gibson and Walter Robert Chisholm. I did find however just one person in the statutory register of births who has the combo name of Walter Robert Chisholm, born in the right time frame. This is Walter Robert P Chisholm , registered in the St George District of Edinburgh in 1860. If you purchase that registration certificate from Scotlands People, you will find the parents names, and this may be useful in trying to track an emigration to Canada. A search of canadian records may be the place to find the marriage records for your great great grandparents. A good dig around Australia might yield the death record or a burial stone for Robert, and from there if age at death is pro!
vided you may be able to confirm or reject a possible birth year of 1860. You may also be able to contact Clan Chisholm Society Australia who maintain a database of Chisholm emigrant families, in fact thats probably your best option to start with.
Robert
