Your letter is very interesting. My ancestor Martha Chisholm Biggs settled in Rusk County, Texas about 1845/6. Martha is well documented in Cherokee rolls and a daughter of Ignatius Chisholm by Lucretia Parris. Jesse Chisholm is her half-brother.
We know from a petition filed by Jesse, John, and William Chisholm that they were heirs of a man named Corn Tassel who died intestate without a wife or children and was the brother of their unnamed mother. Jesse and his family are well documented due to historical interests. His brothers are less well documented. John may be the man whose family turns up on the 1896 Old Settlers Payroll with a wife Polly and children: Nancy, Betsy Fisher, James, Jennie, Thomas, Melinda, and Dennis; (the later two were dead by 1896)
There is also a William Chisholm of whose estate John Chisholm's heirs make claim to in 1896. This William is shown as unmarried in 1851. However none of Jesse Chisholm's heirs make claims upon William's share so I am not sure if this is indication that William and John on the rolls are a different Chisholm family or if the Jesse Chisholm heirs just didn't file a claim. There is also no mention of half-siblings George Chisholm or Martha Biggs, who probably would have had a claim.
I would like to know more about your family history and documentation of their stay in Rusk County. Please write me directly J. D. Mahar jdmahar(a)gmail.com.

Hi Mark, I have asked the specialist Chisholm forum if they can help to identify a family or place of origin for your great great great Grandfather, Robert Chisholm, born circa 1800, (place unknown). I will let you know if anything is found.
Regards
Robert Chisholm

Hi Robert
Thanks for your note. Although I was going to make comment, I'll "cut to the chase" and answer your queries as best I can. My father's mother's mother (ie. my great grandmother) was born Edith Mary Chisholm in 1863 (in Chelsea); she married Henry Oliver Thompson in 1898. HER parents were Robert and Sophia [née De Carle] (they married in 1861), whilst that Robert's parents (who married in 1829 in, I think, London - I believe it is on the IGI) were another Robert and Maria (whose maiden surname 'differs' from 'Carr' to 'Daw' - she may have married again). THAT Robert died in about 1841, having been born (not certain where!) in about 1800.
That is where, for me, the "trail" (backwards) goes cold.
[Should you prefer, my E-mail address is "marktpierson(a)hotmail.com".]
Thank you again - God bless: Mark T Pierson
So his son was my last direct male ancestor with the surname Chisholm, and the son Robert (1831-1922)would have

Names like Robert Chisholm are much more associated with the Borders Families rather than the Highland clan, in the 1800's, so a good chance that your family is derived from the Borders, how close to chief Gilberts family I would know. But as its not too long ago in Genealogical terms, it should be traceable. This Chisholm family seems a long way removed from you,its probably your great great great grandfather who was the last male in your line to bear the name Chisholm, just chacking to see if you know of any living (male)Chisholms from this family, they will be your cousins. If you can give your great grandmothers full name, and the name of the person she married, that would be a great help to start a search.
Robert

Thanks for your note. The Chisholm section of "my" family tree is painfully short of detail. My paternal grandmother's mother was born - in Chelsea - as a Chisholm, - in 1863, and Gilbert was one of her brothers (another brother was Bertram who married a lady from Edinburgh, Jemima Dewar). This family's father was Robert, and his father was also Robert, born c.1800 - but I don't know where, nor any further 'back'.

Hi Mark.
The name "Gilbert" stands out, not that common amongst Chisholms, but actually used in the family of the Chisholm Border Chiefs in the 1800's. This family seemingly died out when the last Chief was killed in the charge at Elaandsgate, Boer War 1899. However, the grandfather of the last chief was named Gilbert Chisholme, and he had a son named Gilbert Chisholme (although this son died unmarried).
So just wondering if you have an insight into the ancestral origin of your Chisholm family. Its probably just a coincidence, but I thought it worth asking just in case there is some sort of link to the Gilbert Chisholms of the Border Chiefs family.

Hi Don
You posted a message some time ago on various sites about Ivon. Although Ivon was unknown personally to me, his father (who my father knew as 'Gib' - he was actually Gilbert Prentice Chisholm) was a brother of my paternal grandmother's mother [if you can work that out!].
Of the families in my family tree, I have less detail about the Chisholm clan, but the names you mention are all in mine. However, what I've got I could share with you. If you wish to use direct E-mail, I'm on "marktpierson(a)hotmail.com".

It funny, we did our DNA on the Chism's and we are matching the surname of
Robbins? Could it be during a war the Chisholm clan were killed and someone
else like a Robbins carried on the name? How could this be explained.

My "Chisums"..started off as "Chisholm" over the years and on census
records..the name got shorten. First, to Chisolm..without the "H"..then, to
"Chism"..this I think, was probably an abbreviation. My maiden name is
"Chism", but in the 1950's, some of the older cousins added the "U".
My Chisholms came from North Carolina. Daniel Chisholm was in Monroe County,
Al by 1819. Our DNA project produced a puzzle because we actually closer kin
to the Stuarts and the Grants than to the Highland Chisholms. Viking in
origin.
I set out to prove, a few years back, that there were many more Chisholms in
Alabama in the early 1800's than have been recorded..names were misspelled
by census takers..but they WERE here.
