Hello, I am trying to find the birth of Margaret CHISHOLM born c 1835 at Moidart, Inverness. I have not been able to find her birth and as she is my great Grandmother [My Mother was the youngest born to her son William Strathdee, and I am her youngest born.[otherwise I sound 100 years of age -no only 60.
Margaret Chisholms Parents;
Lachlan Chisholm and Alexandrina MacIver who married 28 Mar 1832 at the Manse of Sleat, Isle of Skye, Inverness, Scotland.
Lachlan's Father was Alexander CHISHOLM who was a Tacksman, and lived at Samalaman for some time and also owned Lochans, which he bought for his son Lachlan.
Lachlan, wife and children came to Australia in 1863 Sailed as "assisted" migrants from London -Ship, "Star of England" arrived Queensland.
Many thanks for any help you can offer.
Jenny from OZ
I have to confess that my Colin Chisholm, pioneer, came out of Scotland in 1812, and settled in Antigonish Co., Nova Scotia, Canada. Since I know nothing at all about Colin (birth or death dates, parents, etc.), I am relegated to doing my genealogy work in Nova Scotia only. I just don't have enough information to delve into Scotland after 1812.. I hope to find the missing link some day, but right now I am trapped on this side of the Atlantic!
Most of my resources, therefore, are about Nova Scotia. I wish I could be more helpful to you.

I live near McComb, MS in Pike County, the adjoining county to Amite County. I grew up in Amite County. My father gave me a good bit of info on the early 20th century generations of the Chisholm family before he died, but not the older generations. That is what I have been researching. I still wish I could go back and ask him more questions.

I found the marriage information on your Stella Chisholm in the Amite County, Mississippi marriage records. It is:
Chisam,Stella & Jackson,Hammond Apr. 14, 1932, Book 28, Page 321.
Stella is the daughter of David "Dave" Chisholm and Minnie Buckhalter (not Burkhalter). Dave and Minnie married Apr. 5, 1914 in Amite Co., MS. I have Stella's birth date as July 16, 1915. They had another daughter, Larky born in 1919.
Dave had an earlier marriage to Adliza "Prude" Bowlin. I have seven children in that marriage.
Dave Chisholm is the son of Daniel Washington Chisholm and Elizabeth Frances Nettles (my g-g-grandparents).
Does this help you?

There is well document evidence that a Hugh Chisholm and his brother, John R. Chisholm, worked for Thomas Jefferson. Hugh also worked for James Madison. Has anyone researched this line?

Hi Bobbie, you will have plenty of cousins, quite distant possibly by now around Nova Scotia, although many have spread from here to everywhere else in America. As far as the DNA testing goes, to test your Chisholm line you need to have a Chisholm surname male relative to do the testing. The test is on the Y-chromosome which is handed down from father to son, generation after generation. When a Chisholm daughter has a son, this male child receives the y-chromosome from his biological father, in most cases that person wont be a Chisholm. You may be able to track down your Antigonish relatives here:
https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/Just as a concidence, I am in conjunction with others, searching for a family from Hetherton and Pomquet Forks just out of Antigonish, and this families relationship to us was made known only via the DNA testing. If you come across this name William "the Plankoo King" Chisholm in your genealogical hunting, please let me know.
all the best
Robert

I am interested in the Chisholm DNA testing. My great-grandmother Was born a Chisholm in North Grant, Antigonish, Nova Scotia. I found an obituary of her brother, Duncan Angus Chisholm of Antigonish who died in 1932 at the age of 81 years. The article mentions my great grandmother, Mrs.Crowley of Oakland, California, USA.I found my great-grandmother, Isabel Crowley, living with my grandparents in Oakland, California the 1930 U S Census. She gave her age as as 81 years as of April 8th, 1930 which would make her 2 years older than Duncan. It also named sons, Angus J. Chisholm, of North Grant, Hugh Chisholm of British Columbia, and Roderick Chisholm of British Columbia. Daughters Mrs. George Baxter of Pleasant Valley, Mrs. Alex McDonald , and Mrs. T.D. Perkins of Boston.
My grandmother, Mary Williams corresponded with cousins in Antigonish for many years. I remember her talking about these cousins in the early 1950's. My grandmother died in 1969 or 1970 but all of her letters were lost.I hope to visit Nova Scotia in August and would like to meet any distant cousins. I know that my grandmother would be pleased.

This is an excellent opportunity to join in the Chisholm DNA Project. Already we have been able to map out significant family groups within the clan, and to identify some of the early immigrant ancestors to North America. Chisholm group membership is now 99 members, the greater the number in the database, the greater the amount of information available. In addition to help identify your recent Chisholm ancestry, you get to peek back into the time when no Chisholms existed, and see if your Chisholm ancestor was amongst the following groups, all found in Clan Chisholm..the Angles, the Scotti, the Britons, the Picts, the Normans, the Vikings, the Spaniards, plus many more.

Adminiistrator of Chisholm DNA project.
