In early 1850s I found Roderick Chisholm selling cotton to a Spears in Barbour County, Al. He soon went to Louisiana. Others went on to Texas. He lived a few miles from the Ar border. Might be a place to check. Should you run into RC let me know.

I to am from this Chisholm line. My grand father was Claude Smith Chisam and Martha Susan Green,
son of Preston Blakely Chisam and Dixie Evelyn Dunham from Tennessee,
son of John William Chisam, and Debora Jane Allen (whose second marriage was to Ozias Denton Walker),
son of Preston A. Chisam and Cynthia S. Hash,
son of "Hickory" John H. Chisum Jr.and Mary Harris,
son of "Blind" John H. Chisholm and Sarah Harris.
I have seen this document on file in the Heritage Room in Huntsville, Al and have a photocopy, but it is really hard to read. My family came from the DeKalb and White County area of TN. Would welcome any information from these families especially any on Preston Blakely Chisam, place of death.
Will share with family who request.

Hey Jeff,
I do believe wenow have this line in the Chisholm DNA project, and we have 3 other distinctly southern lines in the project. Now is the time for you to round up those Scims of Elijah and check them out against the Chisholms/Chisms/Chisums in the DNA project. I know you have been trying hard to get them in, perhaps the fact that there is definitely something to compare will add some new incentive.

I agree. By the same token, I don't think it is at all valid to assume that John was dead because we can't find a record of him after 1806. There are so many John Chisum/Chisholm/Chism... that we may be looking at the subject John in many records and not recognizing him.

Sounds like a valid argument, however if John was elsewhere, in those times, they wouldn't necessarily have known he was still living or not. Usually a POA is issued for legal activity when a person is absent. Most of this family ended up in Texas, I believe, but were in many places before they got there. (Or perhaps the county borders keep on changing).

I've seen most of that before. But what I don't get is why it is assumed that John died in 1806. The way I remember it is that he had given a power of attorney to his brother Absolom, and Absolom sold the land to John Long. A power of attorney is valid only as long as the person who grants the power is living. The POA becomes null and void upon the death of the grantor. Hence John must be living in White Co when the property was sold by Absolom. Does this sound reasonable?

has a lot of joint references to John and Elijah.
¥ 1806: The above land sold to John Long, May 3, 1806. since the land is in Robertson Co., TN it was necessary to register the deed in that county. There John Chisum is designated as of 'White County'. Evidently he died in the home of Elijah Chisum (his brother) who lived in Sparta, White Co., in 1806.

There are at least three branches of Scism lines, in the Dna project we have NO Scisms participating from the Tennessee lines.
I think we have one from the NY lines and one from the NC lines.
(Not that many Scisms, and only about 5-6 participants.) MY test is irrelevant, there is a non-marital event 2 generations ago, my genetic line is McCann.
AND there is a record of a William Chisum, son of Elijah, born in 1778, in Virginia. Just haven't proved the two are the same person.

I have seen the speculation that the Scism line is really the Chisum line and it might well be so. I know that Elijah is not reported to have a son named William which is odd since William runs all thru the family. The time and place is right for a Chisum to become a scism. Has anyone in the Scism line tried the DNA project? I think there are some folks in Elijah's fathers line who have participated and that could help resolve the question. Good Luck..I know that's really a hard problem.

And I am looking to verify whether or not William Scism, born 1778, is a son of Elijah Chisum, Lawyer of Hawkins County, latter White County.
Earliest record on William Scism is an 1803 marriage to Elizabeth Duncan of Johnson City, Carter County, Married in Hawkins County.

Message Board Post:
I am looking for parents of Ella Louise Spear or Spears (1885-1952).
=
Several on-line databases show Louis / Lewis Chisholm and Ella Spear (or Spears) married on 16 Jun 1906, but I have not seen a source; nor for either of their death dates. Their children were Douglas Truman, Edith, Lela, Emma Jean, Claudean / Claudine, Louis Clark, and Thomas Hensley, all of whom are fairly well documented.
=
Birth information for Louis and Ella is partly confirmed by census records for 1910, 20, & 30:
=
US Census 1910 at Indianola, Pittsburg, OK shows Louis 24 [1886], wife Ella 24 [1886] b OK, both parents b "United States," married 4 years [1906]; 2 children.
=
US Census 1920 at Haileyville, Pittsburg, OK shows Louis 34 [1886], wife Ella 34 [1886] b AR, both parents b Mississippi; 6 children.
=
US Census 1930 at Haileyville, Pittsburg, OK shows Lewis 43 [1887], wife Ella 43 [1887] b AR, father b "Mixed blood," mother b "Cherokee" (these are entries in the parents' "place of birth" column); all children shown except Edith. Age at marriage: 21 (consistent with birth 1885, marriage 1906)
= =
Louis (age 14) is with his family at Grayson Co, TX in 1900 but I cannot find Ella before her 1906 marriage to Louis. There are several "near miss" census records that match name, birth date (1885) and birth place (AR) but disagree on other important details such as birth place of her parents.
