Hi Teresa.
It does come down to the question of dollars.
The 37 marker test will be sufficient to identify the genetic family, and to be able to establish which other families with similar names are kin, ie have a common ancestor. What the 67 marker test does,is, when there is a match, allow you to be more accurate in determining the proximity of the common male ancestor.
For instance you could have a 37/37 match with someone, and this may lead to a belief tha you are very closely related.
If 67 markers were compared, the match might fall away to say 63/67, which is still close, but if it concerned any 2 Chisholm/Chisum/Chisms in say Alabama, the common ancestor would most likely not be an American, but somebody, somewhere in Scotland.
Doing the 67 marker test to begin with is more economical, several people have "upgraded" from 37 to 67, and the fee for this works out to be a bit more.
So overall I would recommend the 67 marker test, particularly for the South where there is a long and deep history of Chisholms coming in from Virginia or Carolina.
Cheers
Robert

Dear Robert,
Thank you so much for the information. I wanted to write to you and ask if I should order the 37 marker test... or the Y-DNA 67 marker test?
Thanks,
Teresa

Hi Ellen, I have referred your posts to some people who know about as much about this family as its presently possible to know. I feel sure that they have not yet pinpointed a home in Scotland, and although the DNA is useful in identifying John's genetic family, because this particular family is found in both the Highlands and the Borders, one cannot even give a generalised description... although I think the feeling is towards the Highlands, which would make sense in view of the timing of the immigration, and the name of who we believe to be one of the brothers.

John's son James Chisholm 1849-1922 Married Drusilla? in 1871. James was my ggrandfather, his daughter Cassie Ellen Chisholm Winters was my grandmother.
Would love to know where John came from and who his parents were. I would really like to have some pictures.
Do you have a list of John's brothers
and sisters? All I know about John is he was born in Scotland.

Hi Ellen, somehow your post is mixed up in a very old thread.
However there is no mistaking the persons you seek, the name of Cinderella Parrr is quite distinctive.
Current research is ongoing with Clan Chisholm sSociety genealogists, the Chisholm DNA project, and a descendent of John, to try and establish the time and place where this John Chisholm, and his brothers, emigrated from. We know they ended up around Harpers Ferry and Grub Ridge, but the search for the Scottish ancestry is not proving easy, although new leads are always being followed. This family is part of the Chisholm DNA project and exhibits a classic
Chisholm Viking Y-DNA profile

There's a Jesse Laroy Chisholm(August 16, 1903-June 27, 1959) and his wife,
Annie Mae (McVay) Chisholm(February 21, 1915-June 12, 1968) buried in Crowville
Masonic Cemetery. Who were Jesse's parents?
Also looking for Robert T. Chisholm's parents... He was born on May 20, 1916
and died on October 12, 1933 and is buried in Lone Cedar Cemetery.

Hi Teresa,
Your participation in the Chisholm DNA project would be most welcome In addition to all the Chisholms who have spread around the world, the project has got a good core of representation from the southern states of the US. Some commentators have suggested there were 4 lines of Chisholms which generated the Chisholms/Chisolms/Chisums and Chisms of the old South. So far from our southern participants we have identified 4 different lines, and 2 of these families have claimed ancestry back to the early times in Virginia, and this includes one family with descendents who are known to have spread south into Alabama, via KY and TN.
Project representation from the south so far includes Chisholm/Chisolm and Chism, but no Chisums have yet enrolled.
You can see a project report on the Clan Chisholm Society website http://www.clanchisholmsociety.org/, this will be updated in the coming weeks to reflect the latest results.
Look for the pdf file "Blood of the Clan".
Online enrolment in the Chisholm DNA project is quite straightforward, but you need to be aware that its got to be part of the Chisholm group, otherwise you get charged a whole bucket of cash more. Here is the joining page
https://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=Y42908&special=true
For someone in Alabama, it would not take long once enrolment is made, as the kits are sent from Houston, and you send them back there once the swabs have been taken, then its about 6-8 weeks processing time at the University of Arizona before the results start filtering through.
The project would really appreciate your participation in an attemt to sort out the southern Chisholms, many who arrived in times, or in circumstances, when record keeping was not done particularly well.
Regrads
Robert Chisholm

Has anyone participated in this? I'm interested in the line that was in Monroe County, AL in the early 1830s and 1840s
as well as the ones in Mobile County, AL since the 1850s.
Chisholms in Franklin and Winn Parishes in Louisiana are probably related.
I would like to order a test (67 marker) for a male cousin and possibly compare it with another line.

Now Jolene and others, here's a challenge. Colin Chisholm who knew more of the Chisholms and the Celtic Traditions of Strathglass than anybody else, thinks Donald Gobha may have come from the great Farquarson Clan. Here is your chance to prove or disprove this.. find a direct male line descendent of Donald and get him enrolled in the Clan Chisholm DNA project, this test will tell if ther is a match to Farquarson DNA. We have discovered about 14 distinct bloodlines in Clan Chisholm, many of them R1b British Celtic, so far no match with a Farquarson. Maybe Nonald was a Viking descendent like many other Chisholms... find out by joining the DNA project!

Actually Maggie I DO have something on these two but her name is given as "Elizabeth" in her Death certificate ("Elizabeth" and "Isabella" seem to have been interchangeable names). But what is interesting is that her mother's maiden name is listed as Chisholm and not Watt as in your information.
May I ask the source of your information?
