Kerry,
I believe we are "cousins". Please email me privately and put Chisholm in the subject line so I don't delete your email by mistake.

Minerva CHISM was born about 1848 in Mississippi. She married William P.
Hill on 20 July 1866 in Monroe County, Mississippi. I think she may have died
in the early 1880's in Monroe County, Mississippi. Does anyone know her
parents are? ~ Gloria

Josephine was the daughter of William Allen Chisholm and Nancy Elizabeth Arledge. Looking for further information on Josephine and George's child/children. I know they had a daughter by the name of Mary Viola Tippen, but not much else...

Hello Dan,
Looking through the 1841 census for the Strathglass area there is a Valentine (Val.) Chisholm and Katherine Chisholm and children listed at Tomich. I'm not sure the ages quite fit but it's always wise to treat any ages on official documents with caution!
Adult ages on the 1841 census were usually rounded down to the nearest five years;
Val. Chisholm 45 Farmer
Katherine " 40
Alexander " 15
Christian " 12
William " 10
Janet " 8
Duncan " 5
James " 3
Donald " 1 month
Could these be your people?
Alastair

Nice try Jeff, but no, defintely Strathglass origins back into the 1700's. One of them is me,and my ancestors sailed around Cape Horn en route to NZ, thats the closet they got to the Americas, and they never stopped. The other sample is from New England but with clear links to the cCanadian places of disembarkation for Highlanders. There are a few other examples of this haplogroup in Britain, so it is something which happened long befoe the 4th of July, 1776.
(Known as Haplogroup I1b2, with the specific Sardinian variation)

Hmm, I would suggest, without documentation, that the Mediterranean samples are possibly from the Cisme' family that had a couple of US Immigrants in the late 1800s, apparently from the Alpine regions where France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy are close by.
I believe this surname got americanized.

Message Board Post:
The Chisholm surname DNA project, including name variants, is well underway, with 22 enrolments so far in the Y-DNA testing programme.
Early results show a strong Viking group emerging, this includes the names Chisholm, Chisolm, and Chism. These participants are all related within a conventional genealogical time frame , although conventional genealogical methods cannot yet link them.
Another group is emerging as Celtic in origin, although none in this group except one pair, are recently related to each other. The Celtic group includes Pictish and Gaelic ancestry.
Of the remaining particpants to date, two are relatively closely related, and their paternal ancestry shows a Meditteranean origin which may have arrived in Britain with the Celts, the Romans, the Normans, or via some later mysterious method.
One participant shows a paternal descent from a Middle Eastern origin, tho this genetic type is a small but not uncommon part of the Western European gene pool, spread via Trade, the Roman legions, and some Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquistion. Any person wishing to explore their Chisholm ancestry can find out more from the project website at FamilyTeeDNA.com, or download the pdf file "Blood of the Clan" on the Clan Chisholm Society website. Note, this project, by its scientific nature, can only take male particpants with a Chisholm surname. Female participants wishing to explore their deeper Chisholm ancestry can participate by enlisting the help of a close male relative, and likewise, men who are descended from a maternal Chisholm line would only need to find a cousin or uncle from their mother's family to provide the dna samople, which is just a quick and painless rub on the inside of the cheek, no blood involved, no needles!

Sorry Dan, I've no sign of your Valentine Chisholm. I do remember hearing something a long while back about a Colin Chisholm who was a landowner in Jamaica, but never found out any more about him.
Good luck

Hi Sue,
I can only find parish records for two Donalds born in Strathglass around 1800, neither with Donald and Isabella as parents. However, I suspect they would have been a Catholic family, as were most of the Strathglass Chisholms, and would not have registered childrens births in the official parish registers - it's one of the difficulty of tracing Catholic families before statutory records began in 1855.
The only Donald and Isabella I have on record were parents of one Archibald Chisholm c.1797-1868 who lived and died in Crasky,Glencannich and a Roderick Chisholm c.1798-1875 who died at Kerrow, Strathglass having married twice, 1st Christina MacRae and then Isabella Chisholm. I have no way of knowing if this Donald & Isabella had any other children so I can't really help you there but I'll keep an eye out for them.
Best wishes
Alastair

Alastair,
we have a copy of Donald Chisholm's (1800-1869) death register from Antigonish and it lists his place of birth
as Scotland and census records that say Strathglass. Another cousin feels that Donald left Scotland at an early age to Nova Scotia. Haven't been able to find him on any ships, but maybe he was not a passenger, but a cabin boy
etc.
On the death register his parents are listed as Donald and Isabella.
His wife's name was also Isabella McDonald(1810-1905) and
she was d/o John McDonald (1775) and Flora McKenzie (1782)
If you have any information on this branch of this Chisholm's -- would appreciate hearing from you.
Sue
