Anna,
Yes, I'm related to the Chisholms in Alexander MacKenzie's book through the Knockfin line - Valentine Chisholm of Inchullie was my 5th great grandfather.
The Skye Chisholms don't feature in the book. There does seem to have been a family there in Bracadale for a number of generations but have never seen a link to the main Strathglass families.
All the best
Alastair

Nancy...the "History of the Chisholms" is not indexed. Tells maostly about a Strathglass family. I haven't seen any mention of a Murdock or the Isle of Skye. You might check with Ben Chisholm Broomfield, the current Clan Chisholm Society UK Branch President. Sue...Although the book does chronicle some of the Strathglass family, it is limited to just the Clan Chief's family and does not list all children. There is a Duncan Chisholm specifically mentioned. He was born in 1747 and died in 1782 I think without male issue. Duncan MacDonell Chisholm was born in 1811 and spent time in Canada but returned to Scotland when his brother died. The book is hard to follow unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Alastair...yes Bob does have most of the information that we had compiled. He put it all together in The Fodderty Bloodlines and also might have it available on line. I haven't checked though. Are you related to the Strathglass family in 'The History of the Chi!
sholms"? Anna

Yes, he is. I believe it was on a court document I found on another Murdock

Anna,
OK - there's clearly nothing I can tell you about the Fodderty Chisholms! My family were from Strathglass so most of my research has been focussed on that area. Does Bob Chisholm have all your extensive data for his database?
Sue,
I have a number of Strathglass Duncans, Donalds and Isabellas on file so I'll look out for a match.
You said that Donald's DC identifies his parents as Donald and Isabella - is there a maiden surname for Isabella?

Yes Alastair, we know of 12 children for Fanny and Alexander. They are as follows:
Janet 1793-1880 md Donald Sutherland 1788-1874; Margaret 1794--(died in infancy?); John 1795-1849 md Janet Stewart 1794-1869; Roderick 1797-1862 md Janet MacLennan/McLachlan 1806-1883--; Donald 1802--; Kenneth 1804-1852 m Helen MacLennan/McLachlan 1821--; Margaret 1806-1867 md Kenneth Stewart 1799-1869;Fanny 1808--; Alexander 1810--; Anne 1813-1865 md John Carr 1806-1869; William 1815--; and Mary 1816-1877 died single.
There were a few of us who dedicated ourselves for a couple of years to locating the descendants of this couple. We have about 1200 so far. Almost all of our data is backed up with documents. Only the later family names were taken from word of mouth.
Nancy, there are a few people with Clan Chisholm that are also working on connecting all the Chisholm (and various spellings) branches to one tree. Bob Chisholm actually wrote a book called "Fodderty Bloodlines" and Matthew Chisholm also wrote a book called "From Urray to Murray", both about this particular family. This family originated from Fodderty in Ross & Cromarty. Based on some documents and headstones, we think that Alexander might be the son of a Harold Chisholm 1711-1793. From this we find that Alexander had at least two brothers, John and Donald, both of whom had no descendants. But are there other brothers that we don't know about???
Descendants from this branch are all over the world. I believe it was the Carr family that headed for Australia, several lived in South Africa, many went to Canada and the US. There are many lines that end at a question mark. If anyone would like for me to check names in the books named above, I'll be glad to do so, I have too a copy of the "History of the Chisholms" by Alexander MacKenzie originally published in 1891.
Sue, through our searching, we did encounter several other families in Strathglass. I'm not sure, but I might have some census and other records for a family or two. Duncan was never a prominent name on our family but I have seen it. My computer crashed last year and all of my genealogical info is trapped on the old system. When I do liberate it, I'll look for any Duncan's in Strathglass. Anna

Anna,
First of all thanks so much for sharing! :) Secondly, is there a Murdock
Chisholm who was born (about 1738) Isle of Skye, Inverness, Scotland listed in
the books you mentioned? I am a direct descendant of him and Flora MacPherson
who was also born Isle of Skye, Inverness, Scotland (about 1740).

Anna,
In checking our records further, we believe that Donald's
father's name is either Donald or Duncan. Also, all records show Donald coming from Strathglass, not Ross & Cromarty and Donald's death record identifies his parents as a Donald and Isabella. So it does not look likely as
it is the same Chisholm family. Hope the website sent you
on the Chisholm's in Antigonish County helps.

Hi Anna
Just wondering what your source is for this family?
I have 12 children on record for Fanny & Alexander, so if there's any data you don't have already I'll be happy to help - although I suspect you may already know more than I do!

Hi! Have been reading this thread with interest. Can you share the names and
any information that you may have on Fanny and Alexander's children? I'm
working on the possibilty that ALL Chisholm's(all spellings..) are related in some
way or other....

checking with another family member -- he seems to think Donald's father name maybe Duncan. In the meantime, check
out this website re A History of Antoginish -- there is a
chapter on the settlement of this area in Nova Scotia by
various Chisholm families.

Sue, I have extensive information on a particular Chisholm family line from Ross & Cromarty in Scotland. A few of us have been attemptng to find every descendant of Fanny MacLennan and Alexander Chisholm. They had a son named Donald born ca 1802. There are two other brothers, Alexander b 1810 and William b 1815 that are also mysteries. We assume either that they died or left the area. We aren't aware of any of the family that left Scotland that early (several others came to the US in 1860 and later) however they did seem to be adventurers. Would be nice if we could connect your family to mine. Anna

also searching for information on a Donald Chisholm BD 1800 in Scotland) who came to Pictou County around 1830. He married a Isabella McDonald from Nova Scotia. Believe they had 8 children. If you have come across any information on them - would appreciate your letting us know.
