Dear David,
Thank you for your response to my inquiry. I have Alexander Chisholm's date of birth as May 1843. Would this be the son of Valentine Chisholm & Catherine Cameron for sure? Did they have any other children? Do you have any more information on this family? Is my family part of your family as well? Look forward to hearing from you again. And again, Thanks. Still looking for ALEXANDER CHISHOLM who died between 1851 and 1861 (probably before Statutory death records began in 1854). He was married to SARAH MACDONALD, sister of JOHN MACDONALD, R.C. Bishop of Aberdeen and was last seen on record in 1851 with his family at Carnoch, Kilmorack.
He was a gamekeeper at Guisachan in 1847 at the time of his marriage.
I have been unable to find any death notices or records for him or any published memorial inscriptions from the Catholic burial grounds of the region which would seem to fit!
I have reason to believe he was a son of a John Chisholm and Ann MacRae but cannot confirm this. There may have been family connections in Benevian and Crasky, Glencannich - possibly also Breakachy.
I've been frustrated in my search for some time now - just thought I'd put out another cry for help in case it rings any bells!

Searching for the following Chisholms from either South or North Carolina:
Daniel Chisholm - owned land around 1819 in Monroe County, AL - Cahaba land office. Daniel was born between 1780-1790. His wife was Margaret Chisholm (unsure of her maiden name). She was born "around" 1800, according to the 1850 Monroe County, AL census.
Children in the Daniel/Margaret's household in Monroe County in 1850 were:
Elizabeth - 28 from NC - born around 1822
Sarah - age 30 from NC - born around 1820
Mary - age 26 from NC - born around 1824
Neal R. - age 22 from AL - born around 1828
Ann - age 18 from AL - born around 1832
Mary Chisholm - listed on the 1830 census for Monroe County, AL. She lived beside Daniel Chisholm and was between 50-60 years old - born between 1770-1780.
I believe she is living in the household with Daniel in 1840.
Elbert Chisum - age 45 on the 1850 Monroe County, AL census. His wife was Sarah Chisholm - age 42 on the 1850 census. Elbert was born around 1805. Children were:
Sarah J. - age 15 on the 1850 census - born in AL around 1835
Elbert - age 12 - born around 1838
William P. - age 8 - born in AL around 1842
Richard P. Chisholm - probably owned land around this time as well. Became indebted to a Henry L. Allen and Edward L. Smith (Smith and Allen) in 1832.
Hugh Chisholm - may have been Daniel Chisholm's son. He was born "around" 1823 in Alabama. In Monroe County, he held several land patents above Beatrice, AL. In 1850, he is listed in Escambia County, FL - Pensacola. He married Mary Ann Elizabeth McMillan (from AL) on Feb. 14, 1850. His son was named Daniel T. Chisholm. Hugh worked in Pensacola at the Navy Yard as a carpenter; he was in the shipping business according to a family source. He was killed or died before 1850 - before his son was born on Dec. 25, 1850.
John Chisholm - was also a carpenter - born in NC in 1810. He married Matilda Curry (from Georgia) in 1834. John held land patents near Hugh and Daniel Chisholm. After 1840, John and Matilda moved to Mobile County, AL. Their children were:
1850 Mobile County, AL census
John Chisholm was 40 years old, a carpenter from NC
Matilda was 37 years old from Georgia
William Allen Chisholm was 14 years old - he later married Martin Arledge's daughter, Nancy Elizabeth Arledge, and they moved to Winn Parish, LA.
Ann Elizabeth "Eliza" was 16 years old. She married Thomas Ellis
George E. was 11 years old
John E. or A. was 10 years old
Amanda J. was 7 years old
Andrew J. was 5 years old
Daniel was 3 years old
Any help on WHERE exactly these Chisholm came from in North/South Carolina would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

Thanks for the reply Dan.
I'm sorry if my post was a little unclear. I am aware of the priests' paternal line - Sandy "Donn", John "Donn" etc.
The Arcibald I referred to was their MATERNAL grandfather, i.e. the father of Catherine Chisholm. His wife, and Catherine's mother was Ann MacDonell, daughter of Hugh MacDonell of Knockfin.
It is Archibald's father I am looking for and only know his name was Colin, possibly also from Knockfin.
More later.

Message Board Post:
Alistair,
You have some wrong information as to Frs. Archibald and John. They were my grandfathers 1st cousins. Fr. Archie was born in 1842 and Fr. John in 1840. Their father was Alexander "Sandy Donn" b~1797 in Strathglass d 1879 in Heatherton and paternal gf John "Donn" b 1757 in Strathglass d 1854 Pomquet River (paternal gm Isabella Chisholm b ~1771 Strathglass d 1852 Pomquet River.)
Their mother was Catherine Chisholm b1804 in Scotland and died 1858 in Heatherton. I have no further information on her.
There are no other Rev Archibalds listed in any published genealogies.
John 'Donn"s brother Donald "Mor" b 1762 d 1843 (m Margaret Grant) had a son Rev John b 1800 d1834 who was pastor of Mabou. His sister Anne married Alexander "Pioneer Colin" Chisholm. The genealogies are wrong when they claim Donald had only 2 children. In addition to John and Anne, he had Colin, Alexander "Sandy Mor" b 1788 (inventor of the Chisholm Mathematical Rule) d1876, Ellen b1796 d 1893 Judique who married Colin "Ban" Chisholm, Catherine b 1812 d 1865 married Alexander "Miller" Chisholm, and an daughter b~1805 d 1903 whose name I do not have who married John McRae. They are also wrong in that Donald is a son of Alexander "Breac" Chisholm and Anne McSwein
I think the confusion has come about because "Sandy Mor" and "Sandy Donn" were first cousins who both had priests named John for sons.
My laptop has been reformatted so I have to reinstall Family Tree Maker and almost all of my Chisholm files. When I have reloaded, I may be able to give you more. Good Luck.
Dan
