I'm passing this bit along in hope of helping a very nice lady.
Deah
Here is what she said:
All I know is that John Wesley
Knight and Martha Ellen Stewart m. 1869 in Ripley,TN. Her parents were
John Stewart and ? Chism, Chisom,or Chisolm. I have no more info.I look
through everything pertaining to Chism to see if I can find a female
that m. a Stewart. That's all I know to do.Thank you so much for taking
an interest in me.
This really is a neat page. You may ask what does this have to do with
genealogy? Well, it helps gain insight to how our ancestors lived, and there
are links here that do have some surnames and family history information as
well.
Enjoy,
Deah

I will keep my eyes open. I had not looked much at Doublehead, but I know
I have seen references to him.

It isn't for Barbara but for the new first lady Laura. The only reason I
passed it along was so anyone from that line would have the extra info.
Mrs. Harrell has asked for nothing from this group. I was just sharing the
info that is all.

Thank you for the information however, I believe you have me confused with
another Chism. The best I can tell is that my line is from John Chisum and
Ellender Gillington. I don't have a John M in my line as far as I know. I
do know that many in my line did wind up in Texas starting around 1840.
John and Ellender's son Obadiah, was in Logan Co. Ky and then in Tn. Most
of that line migrated to Al>Ms>Tx.

Hello Cecilia:
The lineage we have for Laura Bush as pertains to the Chism, Allen and Tibbs
families:
2nd great-grandparents: Barbara Ann (Barbary) Chism who married William
Allen.
3rd great: John Chism who married Margaret Tibbs
4th great: Joseph Tibbs who married Eve Wiseman
5th great: John Wiseman who married Rachel (mnu)
With the exception of the 5th great-grandparents, John & Rachel Wiseman, we
have marriage records for all generations. We are specifically looking for
dates of death, cemetery and probate/administration records listing heirs.
We do have proof that the wife of John Wiseman was Rachel, and that she was
the mother of Eve who married Joseph Tibbs.
Many thanks for any assistance you may care to give.

Hi Cecilia,
Can I send this to the Chisham and Chism lists too??
Deah
I am relaying this message on from RootsWeb. It also was announced in
RootsWeb Review, in case you missed it.
So don't be alarmed if lists and sites are not running for a little
while. I'll still be available if you need me, in the meanwhile.

Starting at 8 a.m. PST Friday, February 23, RootsWeb will begin a planned
temporary downtime for maintenance of its servers and hosting process. It
will limit this downtime as much as possible, and will return with increased
performance and reliability for future growth.
In the meantime, please take time to visit RootsWeb.com's sister sites --
Ancestry.com and FamilyHistory.com -- where you will find additional tools
such as message boards, communities, and databases to help you in the search
for your ancestors.
Thank you for your patience.

Hello Mr. Chism:
By way of introduction I am Barbara Harrell of San Antonio, TX, current
Registrar General of the National Society DAR.
I am currently working on the papers of our new First Lady, Laura Bush, who
descends from Barbara (Barbara Ann) Chism who married in Meade Co., KY, 30
December, 1841 William Allen (believed to be a son of Marshall and Mary
Polly
Daily Allen).
I believe that Barbary (Barbara Ann) Chism was a daughter of John Chisum and
Margaret Tibbs Chism who appear on the 1850 and 1860 Meade Co., KY censuses.
In the Hawkins family Bible appears the birth date for Margaret Chism as 26
March, 1791; however, I believe that the year was misinterpreted and should
read 1797 - this would comply with Margaret Chism's age as shown in the 1850
&
1860 census.
Regarding your posting on Gen Forum - often times the designation of Sr. or
Jr. is used to identify the elder and younger men with the same given name
even though the middle names may not conform. Regardless, the fact that
your
John M. Chism and wife Elizabeth had a daughter named Barbara and son named
Marshall helps to tie Barbary (Barbara Ann) Chism Allen to the family of
John
& Margaret Tibbs Chism.
I have established data on the marriage of the parents, Tibbs grandparents &
Wiseman great-grandparents in return for any information you can share on
the
Chism family. Do you know of a good record researcher in Meade Co? I have
a
good contact who resides across the border in Floyd Co. who is assisting me
in this research.
Thanks,
Barbara Harrell

You're welcome. That's what we're here for is to help each other out. I did
get a big suprise today. Got a message from someone who's gr gr grandmother,
was my gr gr grandmother's sister. I hoping that maybe they will have a clue
that will help me figure something out. I was so excited, and it is so
totally amazing. I had just put a couple of new pages up, and it just
happens that the people mentioned in them, are this person's family.
There is mention on one page of a baby Beulah. It so happens that Beulah is
this person's grandmother, and is alive and well, still living on the old
home place. And I also found out that the little cemetery is still there!
This person's gr gr grandmother was Irene West House, who was a sister to my
Julia Stribling Chisham, or half sister technically speaking. It is quite an
amazing story of these people. From murder to riding with Quantrill. I hope
to go visit the little cemetery some time. It's not really that far away.
So, if anyone runs across any Striblings, Dinwiddies, or DeHonney's attached
to any Chisham/Chism/Chisholm, give me a holler!!
If you would like to see the new pages, my site is at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~chisdid/
Deah
I wasn't paying attentione, I thought you were talking to me, I have
answered about 20 emails today, and I can't keep up, sorry for that, I
was talking about the Maxwell and Chism connections, Vickie-----

Hello Deah/Carol,
Don't know how much help I can be regarding the Maxwells, McNulty's, and
Doublehead; however, there is a book that has some data on BDoublehead in
it - and a little data on the Maxwells, although I don't know if they are
your Maxwells. Anyway, it the book is "The Heritage of Lauderdale County,
Alabama." It's a very informative book if you have ancestors who lived in
the area of Tennessee, Arkansas, and Alabama. I found some useful data in it
about my wife's ancestors. I would imagine you could find a copy at the
Historical Society of Lauderdale County, AL which more than likely has a web
site. The book is expensive - probably $60 - $75.
There are a number of pages that talk about Doublehead although I haven't
found any describing his family line - just Doublehead himself. I'll quote a
little from the book to give you an idea of what it has to say re
Doublehead:
"By the late 1700s many white settlers from Virginia, the Carolinas,
Tennessee, and Georgia moved on to Indian properties. Only one great
warrior still stood in their way. Cherokee Chief Doublehead led raids
against the white settlers from the very beginnings. Doublehead was a
blood-thirsty, scalp raising, cannibalistic defender of his homeland. After
pressure from the whites was mounting in Tennessee, Doublehead moved to the
Tennessee Valley area."
The article goes on to tell about how he became wealthy and how he was
killed around 1806 by another Cherokee Chief, Bone Polisher. The book has
some pages that mention Doublehead's activities as a land owner and seller.
There are probably many other sources available to you re: Doublehead - but
I thought I would mention this one. There is mention of some dealings
between Doublehead and John Chisholm in the book; however, it doesn't
mention which John Chisholm he dealt with - and there are at least three who
lived in those times and who are buried there in Lauderdale County. Good
luck in your quest for information.

Deah
I'm searching for these folks. We believe the Maxwells were descended from
Giles McNulty who married Sarah a grand-daughter of Doublehead (we found an
affadavit from Affiant Sarah's uncle). Her mother was Bird Doublehead
(Affiant)'s sister. We are trying to find out about this family, and
anything about Giles Mcnulty who married Alcy (Sarah's mother). It says he
was Irish and hunted and fished among the Indians. They supposedly left in
the Trail of Tears. Doublehead was supposed to be a Cherokee chief. Any
stories, dates, leads, I would greatly appreciate it. If anyone is
interested in the Affiant affadavit, I'd be glad to post it (got it from
Rootsweb). Alcy's sisters, Peggy Wilson, and Susannah Chisholm had
descendants... Thanks in advance...
The Maxwells eventually settled in OK (father Leonard and mom Sarah died in
IN - can't find death records, though), in Nowata County. McNulty's
theoretically died and were buried in Ft. Gibson, IT. Can't prove this

Dear List:
I am hoping that someone belonging to this family may see this message and
respond, this family has been very elusive and I have been beating my head
against a hard wall for a long time.
My family originated in Virginia, My great great grandmother was a slave by
the name of Bridget and she was owned by David Chisholme, Jr., in 1809 David
and his slaves moved to Chester, South Carolina, my great great grandfather
Ned Chisholm was born in South Carolina in 1814, he was listed on the estate
sale of Suprey Chisholme in 1834 and he was found again in 1855 in Alachua
County, Florida, In 1867 they bought land in Newnans Lake, which is the rural
area of Gainesville.
Ned is listed on the 1870 census with wife Julia, and his children:
Alexander, Taylor, Daniel (grandson) Thomas (my great grandfather) Henry F.,
John W.. If this sounds familiar please email me. I have more information to
share.
I am looking forward to hearing from all Chisholms who have their roots
from Chester, South Carolina and Gainesville, Florida.
thank you,
Antoinette Russell
