Dear Chisholm List Members:
First, I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I
hope you and yours enjoy a wonderful holiday season.
Secondly, Ron Crooker, whose wife Shirley is a descendent of John Red
Buck Chisholm, sent me the follow story which derived from their journey
to Texas and Alabama in search of Shirley's roots.
Here is their story:
Hello Paul,
Here's a little wish for the folks on your site. I have lost the address
and
hope you will send it to me. Perhaps, if you think it not too long, you
might place the following Christmas wish on the site for me. I would
appreciate it. You have seen some of it - some you may not have seen.
Still,
I think some of your site members/visitors might find it of interest.
Happy holidays, Ron
Happy Holiday Greetings
He was born on Aug. 1, 1738 and his name was John Chisholm. He was a man
from Scotland and a soldier for the colonies in the Revolutionary War
where,
upon the surrender of the British, he was tasked to take into custody
two
particular enemy - his brothers from Scotland. He was quite a fellow,
actually, and married a girl named Mary. They were the parents of a son,
John Red Buck Chisholm, who fought in the War of 1812 and who, with his
wife
Sarah, had no less than 12 children of their own - all redheads - a few
who
fought in the Civil war (for the South). John and Mary were also the
great,
great, great, great grandmother and grandfather of Shirley Gibbs
Crooker, my
wife. On a recent trip, we went looking for John and Mary, as well as
John
Red Buck.
We found Red Buck in the Tabernacle Cemetery north of Florence, Alabama.
We
had some difficulty finding John and Mary. As it turns out, they were
buried
in the Chisholm Cemetery on the Chisholm Highway just south of the
Chisholm
Church and north of Chisholm Hollow Estates, all north of Florence,
Alabama.
The cemetery was hard to find because it was in the backyard of a
little,
red house that sat about 30 feet from the high-way. In fact, the
cemetery
was the backyard of the house.
The house belongs to a young couple in their late 30s or so. The husband
Jerry was not there the day we arrived, but the wife was. She told us we
could go on back and look at the "tomb rocks". So we did. Most were in
various states of disrepair. One was relatively small - just a part of a
stone really. A part of a giant oak tree, one of two such trees, had
grown
up such that it incorporated that stone into its trunk! A "burning bush"
bush rested on one end of the cemetery. A clothesline draped across the
front of it and over a few of the smaller stones.
A chair sat next to one of the oaks - an old chair and an old oak - and
the
lady of the house told us that often her sister comes to visit and they
go
out and sit on the chair, sew, and look at the graves, pondering who the
people were - what they were like. She says it's very peaceful and
relaxing
to do that. She said a busload of Chisholms drove up to her house one
day.
They were from Missouri and asked if they could stop and visit the
graves.
She told them to take as long as they wanted. Another young Chisholm
college-student descendent comes on occasion to mend broken "tomb
rocks".
But John was there, as was Mary, and a few kinfolk buried along with
them -
some were little children - some were adults related by marriage or
through
birth. It was a nice day that day and I took many photos of the graves.
I
got close to John's stone and thought I heard a sound emanating from
that
area of the yard. I asked John how he was doing. The wind blew a bit and
seemed to moan something like the words, "Well, my bones are a little
stiff - been here a long, long, long time." Don't know if I really heard
that or not, but I guess maybe a little ghostie might have had a thing
or
two to say about the long rest - an eternal rest commencing on October
9th,
1828 for a man of some 90 years of age or so.
We did want to find old John though, and were able to do so. The
cemetery is
a family cemetery, 50 feet by 50 feet. Some distant kinfolk come by on
occasion to see what they can do about the stones - some have been
repaired
a little - others have not. Some are broken and fallen flat against what
was
their pedestal - others have worn to the point
where the writing has disappeared and/or the moss has obscured the
messages.
It is a peaceful little place though and, of course, there is a lovely
young
lass who, with family of her own, sits in her chair next to the old oak
tree
and visits with John, Mary, and their kin as they repose there during
this
early part of their eternity.
And so Ms Shirley has seen the resting place of her long-ago grandpa and
grandma - and feels a little better for having found them. As I said
previously, we found Red Buck's grave up by the Tabernacle Church and
she
felt good about that. We've already been to Red Buck's son's grave (Ben
Frank Chisholm). Ben is buried over in Chisholm, Texas. There's a
fellow,
Frank Williams, who is a self-appointed guardian of this Chisholm
cemetery
and if you go there, mark my words - Frank will soon be there with you.
I
don't know how he knows you're there, but he knows! He wants to know
what
you're doing there and, in a very friendly way, is as helpful as he can
be.
But he guards that cemetery - and cares for it. As it turns out, he's
one of
Shirley's long lost cousins. Ben Frank is buried near his brother Enoch
P.
Chisholm. Enoch is buried with his second wife (maybe his third). His
first
wife was Amanda Alabama Tennessee McMahan. Isn't that a pretty name?
Sort of
a sing-along name, but just a bit frustrating because you get to where
you
want to sing along when you say it - but you just don't know the tune!
Ben
and Enoch and their wives are there though, down in Texas, being watched
over by Cousin Frank.
Anyway, Ben Frank's daughter Jennie Nancy Chisholm married Tom L. Davis.
They were Shirley's great grandparents and their son Tom F. and Tina
Davis
were her grand-parents. Jennie's buried up in Gainesville, Texas. So
far, we
've pretty well traced Ms Shirl back to Scotland through the Chisholm
Clan,
and have found the resting places of some of her Chisholm ancestors.
There
are some other lines in there as well, including Black Dutch, English,
and
Cherokee. (She keeps a tomahawk in her purse to keep me in line.) The
genealogical search is interesting and fun
Not far from The Chisholm cemetery in Texas is the old Irvine cemetery
in
Terrell, Kaufman County. It was a wreck of a place with beer cans and
trash
thrown all through it, and weeds and shrubs growing all around the
markers
such that one couldn't see them at all. The county and state worked
together
to clean it up though, and it is now known as the Old Pioneer Cemetery.
We
went there and found three little Chisholms buried there - three little
girls, none over the age of two and a half - Mary Amanda, Cecilia Laroe,
and
Adelia Matilda Chisholm. I don't know to whom they belonged, but their
resting place is well cared for now.
And I guess that's my message to all you Chisholm folks and kin. Some of
the
Chisholms I know about are resting in a number of different places, but
they
are all well cared for. Some have a nice young lady to keep them
company,
some are buried in a nice, clean, well kept churchyard, a guy named
Frank
from Texas watches over some of them, and some who were lost have been
found - little ones - who are being well cared for now. I hope this
knowledge about these Chisholms heartens you all, and makes you feel
glad
about where some of the Chisholm clan rest, and who cares for them. Call
this a sort of Christmas present - a gift of feeling good about
something
Chisholm - for all you Chisholms, friends of Chisholms, kin of Chisholms
and, as a matter fact, all you non-Chisholms as well.
Happy Holidays, Ron and Shirley Crooker
To Fran and All:
No, you are not missing any messages. I believe the silence must be due
to the holidays. When genealogists are not doing their research they are
out buying a lot of stuff and going into debt and when they realize how
much they have spent they buy a lot of food and eat it to relieve their
anxieties.
Anxiously yours,
Paul the List Admin

I am looking for Chisholms related to Sparta's, Willis's or Blanks from
Tennessee.
Thanks,

Hi All,
I thought I would liven this very quiet list up by throwing out a query. I
have one Chisholm family in my database and I am seeking to find out any
relations that I can. The head of the family is Thomas Jefferson Chisholm,
who went by the name of "Jeff". I am not exactly sure of the middle name
but I do have a death certificate with Thomas J. as the father of John W.
Chisholm in the following Descendent list. I have a possible piece of
information that places Jeff in the vicinity of Robertson Co, KY around the
1870 census. Does anybody know of this family? Any help would be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kim Woodward
