We have had several newcomers join the list in the last couple of weeks
and, as the list administrator, let me say 'welcome' to all. The
purpose of the list is to share information on our chosen surname so
that we can inch our way up our various family trees.
Here is what we wish newcomers would do -- post a message to the list
telling us what Chisholm family or line you are researching. Use place
names and dates. Ask questions. Share good stuff.
Me, I am always researching the Chisholm family sometimes known as the
"Redbuck" line. This was John Chisholm, a veteran of the War of 1812
and an early resident of Alabama. Redbuck was probably born in 1779 in
Halifax Co. VA and died in Lauderdale Co. AL in 1861.
His father was likely an American Revolution patriot referred to as
Captain John Chisholm of Kings Mountain.
Redbuck had many children and I will soon post an outline of my
Chisholms.
So, newcomers go ahead and give us the lowdown on what your interest
are. Same for all you old timers we have heard from.
Happy Trails,
Horatio Paul McAfee -- you can call me Paul.

Hello again, I am trying to find info on my family who moved to Pope
county, Ark. and Izard, and Searcy county.
I keep going back to Knoxville , Tn. and looking for the parents of my
William Chisum. who married a Mary Lewallen.
And some of the names like Elijah Chisum, Ignatious Chisholm, John and a
Elijah Jr. keep coming up.
I have wondered for years if we were connected to the Jesse Chisholm
line.
I emailed the Jesse Chisholm that does the Jesse Chisholm homepage and
he said that there were 3 branches of this family that hadn't been
researched and he thought that Jesse Chisholm had a brother named
Thomas, and that John Chisholm would be his father.
Does anyone know of this?
May be it's a long shot, but since they were from Tn. and around the
Knoxville area maybe someone can connect this line, William Chisum was
born in the 1820's he married a Mary Lewallen in or around 1846-1849,
They had a son named John Green Chisum who married a Nancy Morris,
A Thomas Marion Chisum who married a Alabame Reeves.
and a daughter named Mary Chisum who we were told she moved out west to
live with relatives.
Thomas Marion Chisum who married Alabama Reeves had children named John
Henry Chisum, Albert, and a Delcini;
John Henry Chisum married a Rosie Bell Ford.
John Henry Chisum and Rosie were my gg grandparents.
Most of William Chisums children were born in Ark. Izard County.
William Chisum was killed in the civil war in Kansas we were told.
After his death Mary Lewallen Chisum remarried to a man by the last name
of Thornton. They had a daughter named Sarah. After the death of Mr.
Thornton , Mary remarried a William Bales and had a son by the name of
William Bales Jr.
Mary is buried in the Danville Cementary in Yell county, Ark.
I will glady share the info I have on this line. Thanks Vickie
My quest is for Colin Chisholm and Catherine Morrison of Mid-Crochail,
in the Parish of Kilmorack who were married 29 May 1848. Colin and
Catherine migrated to Melbourne, Australia in 1849 where they had four
sons.
Colin is listed in the 1841 census as a cattle dealer aged 35 residing
at Mid-Crochael with Mary Chisholm also aged 35. The natural assumption
is that they are married but it may also be that they are brother and
sister.
There are no records which give any information as to the family of
Colin Chisholm. His parents are unknown and it is not known if he had
any siblings. Colin had four sons named Colin, John, Roderick and
Alexander in order of birth. Naming tradition would have that the first
born son called after the paternal grandfather, second son after the
maternal grandfather (as he is) and the third son after the fathers
brother (?) and fourth son after wifes brother (as he is).
I can actually trace Catherine back 2 generations but Colin has me at a
brick wall.
John Chisholm

My grandfather's birth name was Nebuchadnezar Chisholm. He has at least =
one brother I know of by the name of John Chisholm. My grandfather was =
born (about 1830) and died (about 1940) in Scottsville (Albemarle =
County), Virginia, in about the 1840s. His mother named all the =
children from Bible names. However, he didn't like his name, so he =
changed it to Napoleon Boneparte Chisholm and went by Nip. He was =
married to Laura Mullens Chisholm and had two sons and 5 daughters. My =
father was the 6th child, named Lloyd Walter Nepoleon Chisholm. He =
later dropped the Napoleon. =20
Nip Chisholm's parents were Hugh David Chisholm (born in Albemarle =
County, Virginia) and Katherine Giannini (born in Rome, Italy).
Hugh's parents were Russell Chisholm (born in Chisholm (in the Blue =
Grass Valley), Scotland) and Nancy Gaines Chisholm (born somewhere in =
Scotland).
This information was filled out in my baby book by my father, Lloyd =
Walter Chisholm about the year 1050.

Am researching the line of John Chisholm (born c. 1796 in Kilmorock), son
of Rodrick Chisholm and Catherine Chisholm; and Abigail Forbes (born c.
1808 in Urray), daughter of Donald Forbes and Ann (Abigail?) Fraser.
John and Abigail had the following children - Donald, Catherine, Alexander,
Rodrick, John, Hugh, Alan and Simon. Alan and Simon emigrated to New
Zealand. I have information on all of these children except Catherine. My
direct line descends from Rodrick (aka Rory Granite).
The problem is with going back to information on John's parents Rodrick and
Catherine (maiden name also Chisholm) as there were more than one couple of
those names at that time. Also would like to trace siblings of John.
Any information appreciated from those also researching this line.

John Chisholm (Smith & Ironmonger), d. bef 1834, marr. Margaret...

gives his mother's name as Margaret Keith. So does his sisters, Margaret &
Mary Ann in the LDS IGI. However, John Chisholm (Smith, Edinburgh)'s
marriage record from New Register House, Edinburgh, shows marriage 13 Jan
1809, 1 year before Margaret, the oldest child was born. Marriage to
Margaret KIRK, dau of Wm Kirk!! The only marriage for a John Chisholm in
that time period.
Children of John & Margaret...

d. about 1849 (from letter sent to Francis Chisholm in America by the widow
of Margaret & Francis' brother John).
2. John Chisholm (a Smith), b. 1812 Edinburgh, St. Cuthburts, etc., died
1843 Edinburgh (from same letter....died just before dau Eliza was born)....
he married B (that's how she signed the letter). their children: a. John
(a Jeweller) b 1831, Wilson (Die & Stamp cutter) b. 1835. c. Mary Ann, b
1840, d. Eliza b 1843. Cannot find B. & the children in Scots Origins.
3. Francis (a Brassfinder). b 1820 Edinburgh, etc. died 1911 Winchester,
Middlesex, Mass. marr bef 1850 in prob. Boston, Suffolk, Mass, Mary
Corbett, dau of John corbett. In various records, she is listed as being

Now, will each of you post a message on the list telling us all what
Chisholm line or person you are researching? Just to bring everybody up
to speed. You never know what may result, or what genealogical jewel
may present itself to you.
My interest is the "Redbuck" Chisholm line. He was the son of the John
Chisholm sometimes known as Captain John Chisholm of Kings Mountain.
One of Redbuck's sons was Enoch P. Chisholm who was an early settler of
Sabine Co. Texas and who later pioneered the community of Chisholm in
Rockwall County, Texas. I have a considerable amount of information
about Enoch and his offpsring, even one of his letters.
I am always looking for more information about my Chisholm line because
there are lots of gaps that need to be filled.
OK, so what are you looking for?
Looking forward to hearing from everybody -- just post your messages to
the list.
Thanks,
Paul
