Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Rootsweb personnel are progressively transferring all their mailing
lists over to a new system. The CHISAM list has already migrated.
You should not notice anything material that is different, although
Digest subscribers will see minor changes in the way the Digests are
formatted. Now that the list has migrated it is imperative for AOL
users to check their spam folders and if they find list mail there
they need to be sure to CLICK THE *THIS IS NOT SPAM* link to send
the list mail to the inbox. It is VERY important to help train the
filters and let AOL know that this new server can be trusted.
You can continue sending messages to the list using the old
CHISAM-L(a)rootsweb.com mail address or you can use the new form:
CHISAM(a)rootsweb.com. The new form is strongly recommended as the
old form of addressing will eventually be phased out.
For those of you who have set-up filters to trap messages from the
list, the [CHISAM] prepend to the subject line remains unchanged.
However, if you use the address CHISAM-L or CHISAM-D in your
filter, this will need to be changed to just CHISAM.
It is no longer possible to subscribe to the list twice using a
single email address. If you wish to subscribe to the List in both
Mail mode (the old -L) and in Digest mode (the old -D) you will need
to use two separate email addresses - one for each mode. So I
suggest you keep life simple and just subscribe to one of the forms.
They are the same messages, just a different format.
The "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" methodology has changed subtly -
these commands (which should be sent to the
CHISAM-request(a)rootsweb.com ) must now be typed into the subject
header rather than the body of the message. Keep the subject to just the
one word required and leave the message body empty.
Finally, the way bounced mailings (that is, messages that cannot be
delivered) are handled by the system is different. Up to now as
"Admin" I often receive many notifications of bounced mail . This
will no longer happen and I will not be aware of a problem until the
system disables your list account due to the number of bounces. This
problem is most often caused by a subscriber changing their email
address and forgetting to unsubscribe from the old address or due to
having a full mail box.
On another "bounce" matter, if you have ever tried to post a message
to CHISAM from a different email account than the one from which
you are subscribed, you know by now that your post wasn't accepted.
That's because one may only post from the "subscribed account."
However, I've learned that subscribers may ask to have additional
email accounts placed on an "Accept List" by the list administrator
(that's me!) so that you, the valued subscriber, may routinely post
from another account without getting two (or more) copies of list
posts. Just a thought..
Any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me, at:
CHISAM-admin(a)rootsweb.com But, be aware that I, too, know
relatively little about these matters; the foregoing statements are
just borrowed from the list-update communications (with permission),
and reflect no particular "techie" abilities on my part.

Did any of our group get to attend the DAR ceremony detailed in the news article listed below? My husband is a descendant, but unfortunately, we were unable to attend.

Revolutionary War soldier honored in White County

The Daughters of the American Revolution will be honoring Revolutionary War soldier Jonathan Harris, who was born in 1751 and died June 28, 1834, in a full ceremony at the Chisam Cemetery in White County. The ceremony will also mark the county's bicentennial year.
"This type of ceremony for a Revolutionary soldier rarely occurs in White County," said ceremony volunteer Judy Drake. "It promises to be a momentous occasion and a great time to honor a man so involved in the beginning of our country and of White County."
The ceremony will include a eulogy by his great, great, great, great, great grandson and former White County Executive Tommy Denton. There will also be a laying of the wreath by direct descendant Royal Chisam. Taps will be played by the Veterans Color Guard and DAR's State Regent will be in attendance.
All descendants of Jonathan and Margaret Patterson Harris are encouraged to attend the ceremony. They had one daughter, Mary Ann, who was born on Feb. 23, 1783 and died Aug. 24, 1849. She was married to John "Hickory" Chisam who was born in 1780 and died in 1855. They both resided in White County.
According to the family's genealogy, direct descendants would have come from this line and would have the last name Thompson, Shuster, Rowland, Seal, Mason, Fisher, Anderson, Denton and Cotton among others.
The ceremony will be held at 2030 Webbs Camp Road in the Horseshoe Bend area of Walling this Sunday, July 23, at 3 p.m.
White County DAR member, Pamela Wood coordinated the event. A granite sign to Harris' memory has recently been placed on the site by Wood and her husband Rick. For more information contact Drake at 657-5193.
