I don't know any Chipmans in Poland, Maine. Your story doesn't make sense. You say "I don't know how to approach them or contact them," and yet you're asking for help on an Internet message board. Regarding FamilyTreeDNA's use of DNA you say "these DNA sequences do not AT PRESENT identify any other genetic characteristics other than relationship." That doesn't give me a lot of confidence. Why don't you just get a Poland, Maine phonebook and phone your relatives? Something's wrong here.

We have actually gotten a male descendant in Mississippi to get a DNA test. But the only Chipman test we could find was DNA results posted on the Sorensen Molecular Genetic Foundation website. Even with that uncertainly (we don't know exactly who was tested for that database), there was a close match. The family name in Mississippi was changed from Chipman to Chipley, and we want to verify the connection. FamilyTreeDNA uses what they call "junk DNA" for these tests, and these DNA sequences do not at present identify any other genetic characteristics other than relationship. There are many Chipmans around Poland, Maine, where my GGGgrandfather came from, but I don't know how to approach them or contact them. Do you know the Chipman families in Poland?

My advice to you is to find a sample that stems from John and Hope (Howland)'s first son Samuel, since the Chipmans of Maine are descended from him. I'd also advise you to proceed carefully, because DNA contains a lot of information other than links to ancestry.

On the contrary, the male Y-DNA mutates very slowly, and it is possible to identify likely family relationships among males in a direct line of descent over many generations. The test does not involve blood. It it usually done with a sample of saliva or a cheek swab. I've been seeking a Chipman male who has had a DNA test done in order to trace my great great great grandfather to the Chipmans in Poland, Maine.

As I'm sure you know, the book you have titled "A Chipman genealogy, circa 1583-1969" is extremely difficult to locate. I was hoping you might look up a few queries for me?
Thanks,
Randy

I just stumbled onto this and thought I would share.
Samuel Chipman Centenarian
Samuel Chipman died Tuesday in Halifax in his 102d year. His 101st birthday was October 18 last. He had been identified with the public affairs of Halifax since 1827, when he was first elected to the Legislature. He was probably the oldest Free Mason in the world, having been initiated in the Virgin Lodge, of Halifax, in 1813.
