I'm not sure what you want, but the first thing to do is to get your husband's birth certificate from the Department of Health in the state where he was born. It will list his parents. If he's adopted, then obtain his adoption records from the county clerk in the locality where the adoption took place. That may require an attorney.
The second thing you should do is pick up a good book on beginning genealogical research like Val Greenwood's. These message boards generally deal with people beginning in the 19th century, which assumes a fair amount of genealogical data has already been collected.
So another thing you should do is see if there's a genealogical society in your community and contact them. They'll be able to provide specific suggestions that are beyond the scope of this board. Good luck.

I'm looking to get in contact with others who are researching the Nathanial & Mahala Chipman (b~1820s) family who started in Canada, were in New York, then went on to Iowa in the early-mid 1850's. I'm specifically looking for info on Nathanial & Mahala's daughter Mary. I believe she married David SPECK in Linn County Iowa in late 1872. David died before 1880, and at least one of his children from a previous marriage ended up living with an adoptive family. Does anyone know what happened to this Mary Jane Chipman? And is this CHIPMAN family closely related to a REED family in any way?
Appreciate any help. Would love an email
