A LINE OF DESCENT FROM COL. JOHN BRADFORD TO RALPH V. CHIPMAN
Although Boddie (a great collector of material on southern colonial families, but less successful in tracing these families to the old country) gives John Bradford’s parents as John Bradford and Rebecca Pace of Brunswick Co., VA, I think it wise to err on the side of caution. Thus I have deleted the Macock and Pace generations pending further study.
1. Col. John Bradford, distinguished militia officer in the Revolutionary War, later a judge and member of the NC government in various capacities, d. 1787 Halifax Co., NC; m. (2) Dorothea Miriam Burgess b. 29 Sep 1743, dau. of Rev. Thomas Burgess, an Anglican missionary and wife Miriam; Thomas Burgess was the son of John Burgess and Dorothy Lovett, dau. of William and Elizabeth Lovett; Burgess family said to be from Staffordshire, England.
2. Anne (Nancy) Bradford, b. 12 Sep 1772, d. in Bedford Co., TN, where she had removed with her 2nd husband John Warren (no proof that the Warren children were hers, the Bedford Co. courthouse having burned); m. (1) 1790 (per Halifax Co. marriage licenses, date of nuptials not given) William Branch II, d. 30 Sep 1793 of “a short indisposition”, dep. Sheriff of Halifax Co., son of William Branch I, b. 1719, d. 1794, sub sheriff of Halifax Co., a JP during the Revolutionary War who was captured by the British and paroled, and his wife Elizabeth; William Branch I was the brother of Lt. Col. John Branch, whose son John was governor of NC and FLA; father of William Branch I and Lt. Col. John Branch said to be, without proof, another John Branch of Chowan, Bertie, Edgecombe and Halifax Cos., NC.
3. John Branch, eldest of 2 children, b. ca. 1790/1 at Halifax Co., NC (his bounty land warrant file gives his birth year as early 1791), liv. 1860 in Pemiscot Co., MO, pvt. 2nd Reg. TN Vol. Mounted Gunmen in the War of 1812, lived for some time in Dyer Co., TN (where he was a mill operator; Dyer was also the residence of his sister Dorothy Myra Branch, ancestress of the celebrated painter Thomas Hart Benton) and New Madrid Co., MO; m. Elizabeth.
4. Anne (Nancy) Bradford Branch, b. ca. 1817 in TN, prob. Bedford Co., d. ca. 1868 at Wayne Co., MO; m. (1) William Kimbrow, living 1854, sometime sheriff of Dunklin Co., MO, killed by a runaway horse; son of John Kimbrow (Kimbrough) of Dyer Co., TN, who operated a mill there; she m. 2nd James P. Rice, a minister.
5. Amanda M. Kimbrow, b. 26 Dec 1843, prob. in New Madrid Co., MO, d. 7 Sep 1901 in Dunklin Co., MO, bur. at Liberty Cemetary near Caruth, MO; m. Newton O. Harkey, b. 22 Nov 1838 in Pike Co., GA, d. 2 Feb 1880, Dunklin Co., also bur. at Liberty Cemetary, served in the Confederate states army during the Civil War, son of Daniel David Harkey and Mary A. Bankston, who are also buried at Liberty.
6. Mary (Molly) Ann Cordelia Harkey, b. 28 Mar 1872 at Arcadia, MO, d. 20 Jan 1956 at Senath, MO; m. Alvis Cowan Bailey, b. 23 Jul 1864 at Dresden, TN, d. 25 Jul 1934 at Memphis, TN; son of Meschach Bailey and his wife Lucinda (Meschach Bailey’s roots have been traced to a Hawkins Co., TN family, but the details are sketchy; I think the generations before Meschach’s grandfather William are false); Alvis and Molly are buried at Cude Cemetary near Senath, MO.
7. Jewel Winifred Bailey, b. 5 Apr 1907 at Senath, d. 1 Sep 1929 at Flint, MI of heart failure (today’s medicine would undoubtedly have saved her life; she was a beautiful woman espousing the “flapper” style) and was bur. at Cude Cemetary near Senath, MO; m. (his 1st) 27 Apr 1925 Beecher Edgar Chipman, b. 15 May 1908 at Senath, d. 23 Apr 1959 at Pendleton, MO, son of James Edward Chipman and his wife Allie Oxley (James Edward Chipman and Allie Oxley are the great-grandparents of Larry Page, co-founder of Google); Allie Oxley was a descendant of old SE MO families like Riddle and Beckwith, as well as Hale, Creath, Morris, etc.
8. Ralph Vernon Chipman, living (had a brother Donald, who d. inf.); m. Valerie Berniece (Jeffery) Scarff, living.
9. Jeffrey Thomas Chipman, living.

I am trying to reach my cousin Peggy Chipman. She might live in Oregon now but once lived in Salt Lake City. I believe her husband was Gary Chipman. Bonnie
