Hi Sarah:
I want thank you so much for all the info you sent me. It helped me so much.
I just got the info on the CHIPMAN's on my husbands side of his family. One
of the CHIPMAN girls marry a STONE and that is where his line changes
surnames. I think it was Celia CHIPMAN who married Frederick Wilber STONE in
Topeka, KS in 1906. Yes, I would very much like to have all the info that you
have I will be glad to pay for amy coping cost and will be glad to send all
postage. I have a very hard time getting attachments off the PC. Bur if you
want to try to send the info that way I will try get to get it. Again I want
to that you for your trouble.

Joseph Chipman was the third son of Jonathan Chipman. He was born in
Salisbury, CT on 5 Aug 1761; died 25 March 1826. He lived successively in
Essex, Waterbury, and Jericho, VT and died at Granville, OH. In 1789 he
married Amy Reed, born in Salibury, CT, 1766. They had 10 children.
Nothing is mentioned about service in Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys. (I
don't discount that because there is not much mention of military service in
this book.)
As far as your theory that Joseph and Jonathan married sisters -- this
cannot be correct as they were father and son. It is possible that the Reed
women were related but they were not sisters. Catherine and Jonathan were
married in 1756 -- 10 years before Amy was born.
Jonathan Chipman was the seventh son of Thomas Chipman. He was born in
Groton, CT, on 24 Oct 1729; died 1819-1820. He married 5 Oct 1756 to
Catherine Reed of Stamford, CT. (Ten children.)
He lived in Salisbury, CT, until after the birth of his children when he
became one of the earliest settlers of Middlebury, VT. Swift's History of
Middlebury (1859), page 169, says: "Jonathan Chipman the same year, (1774)
commenced a clearing on the second hundred acre lot on the right of his
brother Thomas Chipman. This lot lies northeast of Col. Chipman's pitch,
and is the same afterwards owned and occupied by Freedom Loomis. Thomas
Chipman, the original proprietor, soon after the date of the charter, and
before the first meeting of the proprietors, deeded his whole right to his
younger brother Jonathan Chipman, who attended the meetings and acted as
proprietor."
(Page 190) "Jonathan Chipman continued on the farm on which he first
settled until January, 1790, when he sold it to Col. (John) Chipman and left
town."
He lived afterward a resident of Essex, VT, where he died.
How much more do you want? Children's names? The rest of the succession
back to John Chipman and Hope Howland? I can give you both ancestors and
descendants. The source of my information is THE CHIPMAN FAMILY, by Bert
Lee Chipman, copyright 1920.
Bert Chipman was my great-grandfather. John Hale Chipman III used his book
as resource for his own in 1973. Before my grandmother died, she gave me
her copy of the book. She also had a copy of John H. Chipman's book but my
uncle had a fit so she kept possession of it, intending to give it to me
later. Unfortunately she died before she could accomplish that task. (He
has no interest in genealogy -- he just sold all of her books!)
Let me know,
Sarah Kleimeyer
