Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb

I think you're correct that you can attach files to the message
boards. However, I don't think that the CHINN board is linked to
this list, so messages posted on the board won't show up here.
Probably we should keep this discussion on the list, since it's
something of a "here and now" conversation, but you could post a file
on the board and tell us on the list that you've done so.
In any case, I'm delighted to see the list wake up again. My Chinn
line was one of the first ones I researched when I got into genealogy
more than 15 years ago, and I would like to get back to it using DNA
and the much greater availability of records on line.
Eric, since you seem to be the first Chinn male to join this
discussion, would you consider submitting a DNA sample to get the
project going?

I think you probably got the Chinn deaths in Ohio from me, as I've been
collecting the death records there. They include both black and white
lines, as there is nothing in the index to indicate race, until you pull the
records.

Subject: Re: [CHINN] US Chinn Lines was CHINN DNA project
I must confess I think this is the first time really I've seen anyone
discuss DNA for the Chinn lines. I think anyone who is a male Chinn should
try to participate. I descend from the aforementioned John Chinn/Chynne -
he was my 8th great grandfather.
I have done extensive research on this family and have most recently found
some in New Orleans, Missouri, Kentucky. Although they are not my direct
lines.
I have a Chinn CD at home of Chinn deaths in Ohio, and can't remember if
there are other locations on it. It was given to me by someone, I've never
looked at it, as my Chinn line did not go to Ohio. My direct line went to
White Co. IL from Loudoun Co. Virginia post John Chynne of England.
Since the Chinn list is active, I will go home and check it out and see what
people I find on it for any of you looking in Ohio etc.

Following on Elizabeth Harris' recent email on DNA(below), here are
some introductory notes I've made in various editions of my
"Chinn-Rigg[s]-Wurts-Nichol(l)s-Mead of Early Virginia, Kentucky,
Ohio, West Virginia, Missouri and Other States" book on some various
US Chinn lines I've discovered so far.
I welcome your thoughts.

A Special Note for CHINN FAMILY Researchers:
The CHINN line in this book are all currently known
descendants of the earliest known immigrant ancestor, John Chy/n/n
(Chinn) , born approximately 1640 in England and who settled about
1662 in the vicinity of Morattico Creek in Lancaster County,
Virginia, dying there about 1691-1692. His descendants spread West
into Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana ,Arkansas - South into the Carolinas
and Louisiana, thence to Texas, Nebraska, and every state in the Union.

A CHINN DNA project was created sometime back, but there hasn't been
much interest yet, perhaps because most American Chinns assume their
ancestry traces back to the same original family in northern Virginia
and therefore haven't felt that DNA testing would be especially
helpful in their research.
However, we still don't much about the relationships of Chinns in the
U.S. and back in England, and DNA can also help sort out different
branches of the same family in more recent generations.
Personally, I would like to see comparison of my Chinn line (from
Perry Chinn b. 1763 of Stafford Co. VA and later Surry/Yadkin Co. NC)
to the northern Virginia family, since I've been unable to identify
his parents by traditional means. If you're a descendant of one of
Perry's sons, I would even be willing to share the cost of your test.
Family Tree DNA has just announced its annual Holiday Gift
Certificates for new participants, so if you've been thinking about
DNA testing anyway, this would be a good time to join.
The CHINN project is entitled to the following:
two $30 Y-DNA37 certificates
two $15 Y-DNA25 certificates
two $15 mtDNA certificates
While mtDNA isn't useful for surname research because it's inherited
through the female line, if you've been thinking of having your mtDNA
tested for other reasons, you can still have it done through a Chinn
project affilitation.
To get the discount, you will need to place the order by an "invoice
payment" method rather than using a credit card, and the order must
be placed and paid for between November 6 and December 31, 2007.
Full instructions on how to do this are at

or contact me for more information.
