Whilst looking through the 1861 census for Sculthorpe, Norfolk (RG9/1245
f198)I came across this enumerators note at the bottom of the page which I
thought was worth sharing.
............................................................................
............
In this book "working on land" means picking stones, quicks, turnips, and so
on - assisting in the hayfield-do-in harvestfield.
"Farmers boy" means, crowkeeping, leading horses in farming implements, and
helping at the turnip chopper ... (last short word unreadable but could be
initials).
............................................................................
..............
It is my understanding that "quicks" are branches and twigs but please
correct me if I am wrong. A crowkeeper scares off birds.
Regards,
Richard.
