I must be the only Chilton researcher who has not seen the book "The Chiltons - Their Ancestors and Descendants". Guess I need to check out my local libraries again.
I have been re-reading the digest from late April and was especially interested in the post from Jeff Carter on multiple James Chilton. The James Chilton with wife Nancy Clark had a daughter Susan/Sarah Chilton born Sept 16 1815 Madison Co MO died April 1 1873 Wayne Co IL who is my second great-grandmother. Susan Chilton married Eleazer Green Clay on Nov 9 1841 in Madison Co Missouri and they had nine children. They lived in the neighboring county of St. Francois, MO and later [1864] moved to Wayne Co. IL. My paternal grandmother was a Clay. She died before I was born. At end of second paragraph of one of Jeff's posts, he says "If one could figure it out, I would tend to think that one or both of these Clark and Chilton families were closely related". This is so true. More than he might imagine. I have two sources [people] that have said in the past that Nancy Clark who was married to James Chilton in 1796 is the daughter of Mary "Polly" Chilton who married Franci!
s Clark. Yes - that means that Nancy Clark and James Chilton were first cousins. Tell me if this has been proven, or disproven. Tell me if you think this is possible. Jeff said that Francis and Mary Polly Chilton Clark were married in 1801 in Jefferson Co TN. If there is proof of this, this might be too late for Nancy to be their daughter.
I have eleven children for James Chilton and Nancy Clark. They are: John, Mary, Francis[male],Nancy, William, Thomas, Jesse, Raleigh, Lucinda, Susan and Jarrett.
Raleigh Chilton who was supposed to have died in Dec 1864 [I have not seen this record] has names of his heirs all his brothers and sisters except Jesse who is dead. The letter below explains this, I believe. I guess Jesse did not marry, therefore no heirs. The "Heirs of Susan Clay in Illinois" for Raleigh Chilton is my ancestor. I am assuming there was a Will for Raleigh somewhere.
Also, I have not seen the letter from Raleigh Chilton posted. So I will post it. If you can figure it out, it will help a lot. Raleigh is a brother to Susan Chilton, I think he was born around 1809 or 1810 according to multiple census. Below is the letter. [Thanks should go to Barbara Imboden.]
If anyone knows if Raleigh was married? He may have a wife in the 1840 census, but the other young female may be his sister Susan. He was very busy as executor of his father James' will. The older female in his 1840 census is probably his mother Nancy.
