I'm not a Chilton descendant, but I am trying to track down the
family of Floy (Florence) Chilton Wheeler, of Memphis, TN. This
Chilton was apparently a close friend of my great aunt, Juliet
Allein, also of Memphis. I have a 78 rpm record album that is a
recording of a party held in Memphis (Justine's?) on January 25, 1964
to celebrate the 70th birthday of Floy. Many family members were
there (possibly 25+) and most of them were able to have their message
to Floy recorded on the album. Many names are mentioned, some by
their full name and some by just their given name, and it wasn't
clear which people were Chiltons, and which were Wheelers, but it did
say on the record that the Wheelers were "Yankees" from up north.
The main speaker said that Floy was the "matriarch" of this Chilton
family. There was jazz <?> music being played in the background,
possibly live. Some of the names spoken were: Floy (Florence)
Chilton Wheeler, Walter H. Wheeler, Jr., Harrison Randolph Chilton
III (who came 2,000 miles on Uncle Walter's money), Charles Marshall
Chilton, Carol (Tommy's wife), Peggy Chilton, Charles, Juanita, Mimi,
Jack, Quad, Rue, 2 Elizabeths, Tercius<?>, Josephine, and more.
Mention was made also of a Roger Smith<?> Hotel. They spoke of the
Christmasses at the Wheelers. Jack and wife Peggy came to the party
with two youngsters. A little girl spoke to Grandma (Wheeler.) On
the album, the talk is so rapid I couldn't transcribe it all. I
would like to somehow copy the album onto a CD or cassette, and maybe
someday track down this Chilton/Wheeler family and give them a copy.
The album is such an incredible heirloom....it gives me the "voice"
of my aunt Juliet Allein, and all the voices of the Chilton/Wheeler
families who were there at that party in Memphis in 1964. My
resources are so limited....no subscription to ancestry.com, and only
a dial-up internet connection, so tracking the Chiltons has been
fruitless. I found a Harrison Randolph Chilton in Coronado CA but
can't find a current email address for him, or his wife May/Margaret,
and I also found that name again in Joliet IL living with a Kathryn
Chiton. Can't be sure these Chiltons are connected to the ones who
were in Memphis. I searched both Rootsweb and Genforum, to no
avail. In my great-grandmother's recipe book, I also found a recipe
for Mrs. Chilton's cake. Any suggestions?
