ELLENBURG -- Hilda I. Chilton, 82, formerly of Ellenburg, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at the Brooke Grove Nursing Center in Sandy Spring, Md.
She was born in Cannonsville, N.Y., Jan. 26, 1924, the daughter of Coburn and Viola (Currier) Young.
She graduated from Union-Endicott High School in Endicott, N.Y., the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and the SUNY Teachers College at Plattsburgh, where she received her masters's degree in elementary education. Hilda was a music teacher at Ellenburg and Northern Adirondack Central School for 33 years.
She was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the United Methodist Church of Ellenburg, where she was organist for several years. She was a veteran of the armed forces, having served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946.
Hilda married James W. Chilton in Ellenburg, June 29, 1949. He predeceased her in 1995.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James Y. and Barbara Chilton of Grayslake, Ill.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary and Barry Miller of Olney, Md., Ruth and Larry Sanders of Mendham, N.J., and Sarah Chilton of Washington, DC; one sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Dane McGregor of Johnson City, N.Y.; two brothers and six sisters-in-law, Nathan Young of Berkshire, N.Y., Donald and Christine Young of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Josie Treggett and Alba Chilton of Plattsburgh, Mary Jane Chilton of Ellenburg, Mary Coscia of Flanders, N.Y., and Charlotte Young of Newfield, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at the E.F. Drown Funeral Service in Ellenburg. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Community Center in Ellenburg, with a reception following the service. Burial will be at a later date in Sheldon Hill Cemetery in Ellenburg Depot.
