Message Board Post:
I'm looking for information on the lineage of a Henry Chiles who owned land on Fishpond Creek of what was then Albemarle County, Virginia, 1751-1760. A deed dated 1751, and another from 1760 show his property adjoined that of my direct ancestor, Thomas Sanders. I'd like to find out whether or not Henry Chiles is descended from Walter Chiles, who owned property in Charles City County adjoining William Saunders in 1648. I suspect William Saunders may have been a brother-in-law of Walter Chiles; if he was, and Henry Chiles is descended from Walter, it could prove to be a breakthrough clue in identifying the ancestors of Thomas Sanders.

Book: “The Childs-Chiles Family” by Mary C. Chiles, Ohio. (In the
Auglaize Co, OH Library)
“Ambrose (Tandy) Campbell inherited several tracts of land when he
married, but due to poor management, he lost all this and ended up in jail. He
lost his land because he co-signed loans for some of his friends and they
failed to repay the loans, therefore forcing the losses on to Tandy. With the
help of friends he was able to get out of jail to be with his family. He and
Rhoda packed up their family possessions and headed west by covered
wagon. They traveled the Shenandoah valley to Cumberland, Maryland and then west on
the national road to the area in Franklin Co. Ohio, near the town now
called West Jefferson, Ohio. When they arrived in this area in the year 1825 ,
the land was just being settled. Tandy cleared some land and planted crops
in 1826. A short time later Rhoda and an infant child both died, leaving
Tandy with eight small children to raise. Ambrose (Tandy) Campbell died of
malaria fever in 1828. There was a family by the name of Strader in the area
who took in the children to raise. They lived with Mama Strader until they
were old enough to make it on there own.”
(This story comes from the descendants of Ambrose Campbell and Rhoda
Chittum. NOTE: the name TANDY is not right, that was added by Mary C. Chiles,
who wrote a genealogy book in the 1990’s and she got Ambrose mixed up with a
earlier Ambrose in VA. This has no bearing on Ambrose’s family in Ohio. The
fact that Mary C. Chiles got his ancestry wrong, does not mean that she and
the others do know their own relatives in Ohio. They did know them and
they got the OHIO family correct. They lacked understanding of the Virginia
family because of the distance between the 2 places, they had no
communication back then.
I know this Elizabeth Shoemaker who married Jacob Strader. They are the
couple who took in the Campbell orphans, the small children of Ambrose
Campbell, when he died in 1828.
The following is copied from the Childs-Chiles Family History compiled by
Mary C. Chiles:
“Ambrose Campbell Jr., the last child of Ambrose and Margaret Campbell,
was born in Amherst County, VA in 1794 and died in Franklin County, Ohio in
1828, from malaria. He married Rhoda Chittum in Virginia in 1817. His father
had given him a large tract of land when he married, but he was a poor
manager and lost it all. After his father died he inherited more tracts of
land, but due to bad management he lost all of this and ended up in jail. Some
friends helped him get out of jail and he packed his possessions and family
and headed west. Ambrose and Rhoda had eight children at this time. They
traveled by covered wagon pulled by either horses or oxen . It is assumed
they came by Philadelphia across a trail called Forbes Rd. to Fort Pitt. The
government had built forts along this road to shelter travelers and protect
them from Indians and wild animals. When they reached Ohio they may have
traveled to Zane Trace trail which would take them to the area that is now
Franklin County, Ohio, near the current village of West Jefferson. It is
record that they arrived in 1825. (where the records are recorded is unknown).
The area was still very wild so Ambrose cleared some land and planted
crops. In 1826 Rhoda gave birth to another child and both she and the child
died leaving Ambrose to raise eight children alone. Two years later, 1828,
Ambrose contracted malaria and died, leaving them orphans. Ambrose, Rhoda and
the baby are all buried near West Jefferson. The children were taken in by
a woman they called "Mama" Strader who looked after them until they were
able to be self sufficient.”
Eight children left to Ambrose to raise in 1826 (date of Rhoda’s death)
1. Ann Campbell b. 1816
2. John Campbell b. 1816
3. Rhoda Campbell b. 1818 (died 1827)
4. Elsie Campbell b. 1820 (died 1829)
5. George Campbell b. 1822
6. Catherine Campbell b. 1823
7. Sarah Campbell b. 1825 (d. ??)
8. Baby Campbell b. 1826 (died 1826)
1830 Ohio Census, Scioto Township, Pickaway County
> Jacob Strader
> 1 male under 5
> 2 males 10-14 (George Campbell b. 1822)
> 1 male 15-19 (John Campbell b. 1816)
> 1 male 40-49 (Jacob Strader)
> 1 female under 5 (Catherine Campbell)
> 1 female 5-9 (Fanny Campbell b. 1821)
> 1 female 10-14
> 1 female 15-19 (Ann Campbell b. 1816)
> 1 female 40-49 (Elizabeth Shoemaker Strader)
The descendants of Ambrose Campbell 1776-1828: of those children, with 2
wives, the Ohio descendants state that Ann, John, George, Fanny, and
Catherine lived to adulthood. The 3 sisters remained in contact, and so did
brother George. However, brother John is a mystery, they believe he went to AR
or OK. No know marriage or children. As to the children left in Virginia
in 1825, they did not have contact.
All of this information comes from Mary C. Chiles, and the various and
many descendants of those above mentioned children of Ambrose Campbell.
Best regards,
Lilly Martin
