The Times Dispatch
Richmond, Virginia

NEWS GATHERED FROM SOUTHSIDE
Dr. R. L. Chiles, First Mayor of Manchester and Well-Known Physician, is Dead.
FUNERAL THIS AFTERNOON. [...]
Manchester Bureau, Times-Dispatch [...]
Dr. L. R. Chiles, the first Mayor of Manchester and in his time one of the most influential men of this community, died Saturday night at 11:45 o'clock at the Soldiers' Home, in Richmond. After having been away for twenty years, Mr. Chiles returned here from Norfolk about a year ago, and since that time he had been in ill health. During his life in Manchester he was beloved by all who knew him. He was born in Chesterfield seventy years ago, and after attending Fleetwood Academy he took up the study of medicine in the Medical College of Virginia, where he was graduated. During the war he was attached to one of the Confederate hospitals in Richmond. At the close of the war, he resumed his practice in Manchester, and gradually drifted into politics. He was elected Mayor in 1874, at which time the charter of the city was granted by the Legislature.
Dr. Chiles served one term as Mayor, and was then sent to the Legislature, and later to the State Senate, where he represented the city and district with much success. After a time he abandoned the practice of medicine, embarking in the drug business, which he conducted for several years. Later he entered the real estate business, and was a member of the firm of Chiles & Payne. In 1880 he moved to Norfolk, where he again took up the practice of medicine. There he remained until last year.
He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Mattie Walker, who left one son, Dr. Edward Chiles, of Norfolk. His second wife was Miss Florence Morrissette, who survives him.
The funeral will take place from the home of Mr. Lee Turnley, of Forest Hill, this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. The services will be conducted at the grave in Maury Cemetery.
