Jesse,
No one was saying they doubted you are a Chiles. I am guessing that you are relatively new to genealogy.
You will find the terms "prove" & "proof" popping up a lot. This just refers to the paper trail showing someone's lineage.
Most of us start out with information collected from relatives & draw a tree, and for many people, that is satisfying enough.
But if one does want to join any formal societies, such as the DAR, one has to "prove" one's link with documentation.
So much research has been done on the Chiles family, and so much data already published, that you may have to do no more than supply your own & maybe your parents'/grandparents' birth certificates.
Good luck with your research.

I am sorry if you took offense.
I was replying to a question from someone else and encouraging others to look into the Jamestowne Society as a place to honor your ancestor.
Not everyone that is of a certain line has the SURNAME of that line.
"IF" a person wants to join a society such as the Jamestowne Society you need to prove to the society that your ancestor was in Jamestowne by a certain date and you need to prove your lineage to that ancestor.
I was very honored to have found that my ancestors, Walter Chiles 1, Walter 11 & Susanna Chiles were at Jamestowne and help build this wonderful county of ours.
Hallie

My grand father was a partner in Chiles and Sullivan contracting co. our oragins are from the deep south on my grandads side and we are distant cousins of Governer Chiles. on my Grandmothers side she was first generation american after her family came from Italy.
