I sent an email to the address listed, but wanted to try here as well, just to cover all the bases.
I am a genealogy buff, but not a Chiles descendant. In Colorado earlier this year, I found a small druggist bottle, from circa 1880-1881, embossed "Chiles & Co, Chemist, Denver, Colo". The discovery of the bottle has led to a great deal of research to find out more about the Chiles & Co business and the man behind the name on the bottle.
Thanks to a great Colorado-based researcher who I found on the RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness) website, here's what I have so far:
The man in Denver was named Edward Chiles, and we found the following info:
1860 census:
edward chiles, 11, son of walter e. chiles, merchant, frankfort, KY (Walter E. Chiles lists his nativity as VA, although at least one subsequent census record - 1880 Denver - lists it as Kentucky)
1870 census:
edward chiles, 21, druggist, frankfort, franklin, KY
1880 census:
edward chiles, druggist, 32, KY, living at 532 champa st., denver with wife lizzie, 26, PA (name is actually written as "Childs" in the census, but corresponds to all other Chiles references from the same timeframe)
1880 Denver city directory:
"chiles & co., (edward chiles, atwell rennick and w.j. todd) drugs and medicines, 556 arapahoe, cor 21st"
1881 Denver city directory:
"chiles, edward, stockbroker, 3 windsor blk, r 544 arapahoe"
1882 Denver city directory:
(in bold), "chiles, edward, mining broker, 271 17th, r 544 arapahoe."(fyi-17th is financial district).
1883 Denver city directory:
Chiles, Edward (in alpha listing, not in business listing)
Edward is not in the 1884 or subsequent Denver city directories, and not in the 1885 Denver census.
The researcher then found the following hits within the library cardex for the Rocky Mountain News (rmn), a local Denver paper:
officer mining co. summit county colo rmn 3/3/1881 p7 c3
plaintiff, dist court denver rmn 4/10/1881 p1 c2
interested in denver stock exchange rmn 4/23/1881 p7 c2
member seneca mining company new mexico colo rmn 7/14/1881 p4 c3

chiles, mrs. edward- mentioned rmn 1/4/1882 p8 c3
secretary, denver mining stock exchange rmn 2/1/1882 p8 c
director, denver mining stock exchange rmn 2/2/1882 p4 c4
director st. julien mining co. colo rmn 3/28/1882 p3 c3
plaintiff district court denver rmn 5/9/1882 p2 c3
plaintiff, district court, denver rmn 6/10/1882 p3 c2
plaintiff district court denver rmn 6/13/1882 p3 c3

secretary mining co denver rmn 1/30/1883 p6 c5
He's been sending me copies as he finds time to look them up and mail them. He also found an awesome image of an 1883 stock certificate for the Bunker Hill Consolidated Mining Company, of Colorado, with Edward Chiles' signature as Secretary.
Finally, he sent the following info:
"one thing has bothered me - i can find nothing on him after the 1883 directory and news articles. he doesn't appear in 1885 colorado state census nor any of the state business directories after 1883. (i pulled several years starting with 1884). also did some superficial checks of some old cemetery listings-nothing. implies to me he left
colorado. anyway, if you have access to ancestry.com (either personal or through their library edition, there is an edward chiles, born in kentucky who shows up on the chicago voter rolls for 1888 stating his time of residence in illinois as 4 years and 5 months. (1888-4=1883-1884). he is also listed on the 1892 rolls-addresses respectively
as 187 case street and 226 n. state st. you may want to have someone check the chicago area to see if this is the same guy.
i also noted that there is a CHILES surname board on Rootsweb. you may find it of interest. since edward's father reported his nativity as VA, the family MAY be connected to the walter chiles of jamestowne/tidewater
region fame."
This led me here, and hopefully someone on the board might have some additional info. The researcher is sending me copies of all the info a little bit at a time, and I'd be glad to share it with any descendants who might be interested. I really would like to know as much as I can about what became of Edward Chiles, and whether he is descended from the "original" Walter Chiles from Jamestowne (pretty ironic if he was related, and this bottle with his name on it was dug up all the way out in Denver by a guy who lives in Virginia...). I will be incorporating as much as I can about him into my article about the digging adventure and the history of this neat bottle.
Thanks,
- Al Miller
