Hello all,
I would be really grateful for any help filling in the gaps on this story, please:
In Henry Morton Woodson's book on the Woodsons, he brushes off a number of people saying "...went with the family in 1809 to Kentucky". This group includes many of the children of Henry and Sarah (Cheadle) Chiles and their families:
Tarlton Woodson and Nancy/Ann (Chiles) Chiles
Meriwether and Judith Woodson (Chiles) Smith
John W. and Lucy Woodson (Chiles) Laughlin *
William Hawes and Elizabeth C. (Chiles) Blaydes *
William Mercer and Mary C. "Molly" (Chiles) Samuel
David and Edna Fawney (Chiles) McFall
George and Nancy Woodson (Chiles) Coleman *
The * indicates that they were on the 1810 census for Fayette County, KY. They all can be traced through the censuses in Kentucky except, of course, for my ancestors, Meriwether Smith and Judith Woodson Chiles. It looks as if Judith died in Kentucky and Meriwether and the children may have returned to Louisa County, or at least to Virginia. www.trevilians.com has a bit on them and on the sale of Meriwether's estate, but I cannot find his will, and I am not sure of where he died.
Can anyone tell more about this exodus? Why they all went? Who else went? Was there a giant land grant? Inheritance dispute? Brother of the above, Fleming Chiles, stayed in Virginia and seemed to engage in recreational law suits, including some with his in-laws. Perhaps he chased them all away? They were Quakers; would that have had something to do with it?
Thank you for any shred of enlightenment on this story,
Anne

My cousin, Waverly Barbe, died last year and his estate send me files on Chiles, Barker, Haralson, etc. I'm sorry but have thrown many files in the trash since I just don't have the room for them. Then I thought of the rootsweb site. I will send anything I still have. Wilma Smith
