One Henry Chiles and brother John were sons of John Chiles and wife Eleanor
Webber, daughter of Henry Webber and wife Jane of King William. Proven by
Deed of Henry Webber, June 2, 1724, Spottsylvania at which time John Chiles
was deceased and his wife Eleanor had married Edwin Hickman. Henry Chiles,
son of John and Eleanor married first Mercy Carr, and second Susanna, widow
of John Graves (Will 1747 Spotts). Henry Chiles left a will at Spottsylvania
probated Aug. 1, 1763, naming wife and sons Walto, John, Henry, William,
James, Thomas Carr, Benjamin, daughters Sarah, Elizabeth and Ann Chiles and
daughter Susannah Harley (Haley) who had two daughters who apparently her
husband was deceased. John Chiles left a Will at Louisa Oct. 10, 1774, Will
Book 2, page 198, and one of the witnesses was Susannah Haley. One Susannah
Haley left Will in Kentucky. These Chiles, Haleys and Simms all came up to
Louisa, Orange and Albemarle, and some went to Pittsylvania and some to
Cambell County, hence probably of the same family. Susanna Chiles, widow of
Henry left Will at Culpeper. Also James, son left Will in one of these
counties.

Mrs. Fannie Chiles to be buried Sunday (newspaper clipping from 3/6/1943)
Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Shackelford Chiles, 83, widow of Robert
Lee Chiles, who died Friday at her home, 2711 Grayland Ave., will be held
at 2:30 P.M. Sunday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Burial will be in
Riverview Cemetery.
Well known for 50 years of work with the deaf of Richmond, Mrs. Chiles
taught at St. Andrew's Church, and conducted special classes in her home.
Fifty years ago, Captain Jack Pettus, still active with the Capitol police,
suggested that Mrs. Chiles, who was deaf from youth, conduct such classes,
and she responded with a half-century of activity, being stricken while
conducting a class at her home.
Mrs. Chiles was the daughter of Dr. Robert Baylor Shackelford, of Albemarle
County. Her husband died in 1934.
Funeral services, which will be conducted by the Rev. W. G. Irwin, will
be interpreted by sign language to the deaf people present.
She is survived by a son, Robert Lee Chiles; a daughter, Mrs. Dora Mullins;
a half-sister, Miss Mary B. Shackelford, of Cismont; and a grandson, Forrest
W. Chiles.
