Sharon,
Thank you for checking. I have gotten a little farther in my search.
I've learned that Clifford M. Childs was married to Annie Lou Folds of
Jasper County. Her father was Baswell Folds (1840). Baswell is my
grandfather's middle name. Annie Lou's mother was Sallie (1851) but I
have no Maiden name. Clifford was the son of Walter W. Childs (1859) and
Mattie J. Gay (1863). This was provided by Kay Stowe who also provided
additional info from the Newton County Archives. Walter was the son
Henry Childs (1807) and Anabelle (1813, No Maiden). Walter's wife,
Cliff's mother, Mattie was the daughter of Frank H. Gay (1825) and Maria
Louisa (1833, No Maiden). They were from Hays in Newton County. I've
also identified numerous siblings in all the families.
Kay Stowe provided the following:
THE HISTORY OF NEWTON COUNTY GEORGIA, pages 400-402. "Since 1913,
Newborn has had electric lights. At first, the power was generated by a
local plant owned by Dr. L. J. Pharr and Cliff Childs. The plant burned
in 1916."
Speaking with my mother, Sarah Elaine Childs, Clifford & Annie Lou's
granddaughter, the feud between the Estes and Childs torn the town, and
family, apart. She was always told it was over some property dispute.
She was also under the impression that the Childs & Gay families were of
some notable significance in the Newton County area, all though this is
only supported by family legend.
I've also posted at Tidwell(a)rootsweb.com in relation to my mother's
maternal side. They are from Bartow County Georgia, on the other side of
Fulton County. I'm attempting to find the Cherokee line that family
legend says we have.
Thanks again
Quinton Lashbrook
