Who were John Stinnett, Mason Stinnett, and Rufus Stinnett who
collectively purchased 360 acres of land in Jackson County, Alabama (in
what later became Scottsboro, AL)? All the Stinnett land purchases
either joined or were adjacent to land purchased by John Kirby Childress
who was born in 1815 in Knox County, TN and was the son of John
Childress who married Mary Kirby in 1796 in Blount County, Tennessee.
These Stinnett men purchased their land between October 1830 and January
1836.
In the 1830 census of Jackson County, Alabama, I found John Stinnett,
age 50-60, and his wife, age 40-50, with 3 males, age 10-15; one female,
age 10-15; and one female, age 15-20. John Stinnett's neighbors at the
time of the 1830 Jackson County, Alabama census included men who also
purchased land in the same township and range as the Stinnett land
purchases. This is also the area where John and Mary (Kirby) Childress
and their son, John Kirby Childress, lived. The John Childress who
married Mary KIrby in 1796 is thought to be the son of Mitchell
Childress, Sr. who died in East Tennessee, in 1844.
QUESTION: IS THERE A CONNECTION BETWEEN this JOHN CHILDRESS, born
circa 1776, and John Stinnett, born 1770-1780, who lived as neighbors in
the 1830s in Jackson County, Alabama?
