Barbara, Upon looking over the information that you have provided, it is
my opinion that Mosby and Pleasant were not brothers. We are looking at 2
non-matches between the two profiles. If you have any further questions,

Can anyone tell of any documents that would name the wife and parents of the following John Childress?
I have seen his wife listed as Elizabeth Lindsay and as Lucretia Edmondson. I have seen several different
listings for his father.
I now have a copy of his pension record from his service in the Revolutionary War and I also have a copy
of his death record.
From the above documents I have been able to determine this so far:
John Childress was born Dec. 9, 1759 Albemarle Co. VA and died January 11, 1849 in Knox Co. TX
He was enumerated in the 1785 heads of families of Amherst Co., VA with 5 souls in the household as
John Cheldress. Listed next to him is another John Cheldress also with 5 souls in household.
There is also a John Childress (Pedlar) listed with 9 souls in household. This one would be the son-in-law of
Benjamin Stinnett. This John would have been born before 1744 and is not my ancestor.
The one listed as John Cheldress with 5 souls in household would be the one I descend from. (The other John
Cheldress could be his father?)
He is next listed in Wilkes Co., NC in 1787 with 1 male 21-60, 3 males under 21 or over 60 and 2 females.
He then moves to Knox Co., TN sometime in the early1790's. Does anyone know of any land deeds for him?
His estate was written Aug. 17, 1849.in Knox Co. TN
His children are listed in estate as follows.
1. Robert Childress of Knox Co. TN (Robert and his son Robert were appointed administrators)
2. Lucy Julian wife of John Julian of Knox Co., TN
3. John Childress of Anderson Co., TN -- I've seen on-line trees that state he moved to Alabama in the 1820's
and died between 1840 and 1850. But this document clearly states that John was living in Anderson Co. TN
in 1849. There is a John Childress listed in census records for Anderson Co., TN in 1830 and 1840.
4. William Childress of Campbell Co., TN
5. Betsy Hynds and husband Byram Hynds of Marshall Co., AL. This couple is my ancestors.
6. Heirs of Lindsey Childress -- Pheobe Tindell and husband James Tindell of Missouri state; Polly May and
husband Thomas May of Knox Co.; Nancy DeArmand and husband James DeArmond of Knox Co.,; Hugh L.
Childress of Knox Co., and Margaret Childress of Knox Co.,
7. Heirs of Sally Cox -- Jackson Cox of Anderson Co., TN; Curd Cox of Knox Co., TN; John Cox of Claiborne Co.
TN; Robert Cox of Knox Co., TN and Myra Petre and husband William Petre of Knox Co., TN
8. Heirs of Polly Hynds -- Lindsay Childress Hynds of Marshall Co., AL; Benjamin J. Hynds of Texas; Lorrinda
Pharris and husband Solomon Pharris of Texas; Ebenezer Hynds of Texas; William Singleton Hynds of Texas
and Marjory Ann Hynds of Texas.
9. James Childress of Pulaski Co., Missouri
Does anyone have additional information?
Thanks for your time.
Calvin

Does anyone out there have any information on the children of Armajor "Major" Childress Jr. and wife Isabella "Ibba" McClain Childress. Armajor died in 1827 and Ibba is gone from census records after 1830.I believe the children to be:
MARY b.1810 TN - married Hugh Jackson 17 Apr 1828 Madison Co., TN Hugh was born 1890 NC They were Living in Stewart Co. in 1820, Gibson Co. in 1830, Madison Co.in 1840 and Gibson Co. in 1850. Gibson and Madison Counties share a common border, north for Madison and south for Gibson, Hugh Jackson's land was situated on or near this line near the current Crockett Co. line.
MARTHA b. 1812 TN married Henry L. Covington or Lovington
L.A. b. 1819 TN - a school teacher - married Margaret E. Hawks 8 Dec 1845, Henry Co.,
TN
WILLIAM L. b. 1820, TN - married Minerva J. Bowling 16 Nov 1839 Roane Co., TN
JESSE - b. 1825 TN - married Catherine Jackson Benthal 3 Aug 1854 Madison Co., TN #2 Louisa Ponder 13 Jul 1866 Lamar Co., TX
I believe Jesse was about 5 when his mother "Ibba" died and he was taken in by his sister Mary who was married to Hugh Jackson.
He took the Jackson name of his step-father and has made my research a living nightmare. Jesse is listed as Jesse Jackson in every census after 1850. His DNA matches only Childress DNA, not even close to Jackson. Sure could use some help here!
WILLIAM C."b. 1826 TN married Frances Herington 20 Feb 1860 Gibson Co., TN
George Washington LaFayette b. 1828 Gibson Co., TN married Emily E. "Jane" Hawks 28 Oct 1846 Henry Co., TN. According to census records George and
Emily had 8 children. Perhaps I can find a living son to DNA test out of this groups ggrandchildren.
Would appreciate any information on this family that is available from the Childress group . . .
Thank you,
Trellys - trellys(a)verizon.net
I am always watching too but never see anything about the Virginia Childress family - My Alexander Childress and Joseph Childress who I believe are brothers lived in Henrico County, Va. White Oak Swamp area/Curles area I can't go further back from them. Marie Jennings

Jay,
So glad to make contact with you again. I'm in trouble Jay. I got a big
battle on my hands. Parkinson's. It takes about 80% of my strength. Tremors
are the least of the disease. Cramping and stiffness that is closer to
paralysis has me immobilized in a lot of ways and is the true battleground.
I changed computers. I got a laptop but have sacrificed a lot of old files
and trustworthy software. Everything is now laborious.
I'd like to sell my California house and am considering moving to Branson,
Missouri and whether I can start a tourist related business there. I'm
re-evaluating everything.
How are you and Carolyn doing?

I don't reply to many of these anymore, but I do read most. I expect Gary
will advise you that the John Childress VA-NC-TN 1759-1949 is not Viking.
That is the line Gary and I are in and there is definite historical proof of
our Celtic linage at least back to this John b 1759 in VA.
To Gary: I sure miss Mark and treasure so many of the pre publication
materials that he sent me to review. What a great mind resided in his body
and I think often of the fun we had here in the Knoxville area as I
introduced him to the land of the John Childress clan. So sorry about your
mother, I know she had a long hard battle at the end of her life. You and
Mark were wonderful sons as you supervised her care.

Gary, I am sorry to hear about you having Parkinson's. I also have
Parkinson's. As you mentioned, controlling the tremors was easy; however,
the other symptoms are difficult.

Jay,
So glad to make contact with you again.
Gary

My gr-gr-grandmother was Hazy Childress, b. abt 1824 in TN. She was the daughter of John & Edy (Hill) Childress. Hazy married 1st, 1845 to David Dickson. She married 2nd, 1848 to James Guynn. Both marriages in Anderson County, TN. What happened to David Dickson; did he die or did they divorce? They had one daughter, Edy Permelia. James & Hazy Guynn moved to Texas County, Missouri in the mid-1850's.
Who were the parents of John Childress? Edy was the daughter of James Hill, from North Carolina. Would love to find more info on this Childress family.

Hello - My HENSLEY family married into the Childress family as early as the mid- 1800's. My side of the Hensley's came from North Carolina and Tennessee - they lived in Indiana until my side moved to California (Long Beach) in 1920. Sorry I can't be more specific right now - my records are in storage preparing to move from Idaho to Southern California to be back with my children and grandchildren. Thanks for you note of 3/13/12 - Regards, Terry hensley
