This is a repost from yesterday as I am obviously directionally challenged. My ancestors were in EAST Tennessee (Jefferson/Knox area).
I am seeking help to find the ancestors of my ggggrandmother, Nancy (Childress/Childers) Hamilton, b: abt 1796, d: abt 1888 in Jefferson County, Tn. She was the widow of James Hamilton(1795-1846). She is mentioned in the Sketches of Prominent Tennesseans by William S. Speer(1888)(bio of Hon. James M. Meek of Knoxville) as the sister of Elizabeth (Childress), the wife of Adam Kennedy Meek(the subject, James M.'s, father). Another sister, Mary, is also mentioned and was the wife of Alexander Douglas. The description says the Childress girls were the children of John Childress, "a Revolutionary soldier". The closest I have come is a John Childress(b: 9 Dec 1759 in Albemarle Co., Va.). He was a Revolutionary soldier, moved to W. Tennessee and died 11 Jan 1849 in Knox County, Tn. This also fits the "Sketches" piece that describes his death "at an advanced age". Unfortunately, someone on the this board was kind enough to post his estate's list of children and none of the girls ar!
e listed. Since all three were alive at that point, that IS a big problem. If anyone can help, please contact me here or direct at rdtholen(a)hotmail.com
