I was doing somre research and I wanted to throw some ideas out there. I was just wondering what others thought.
Part I
The accepted idea is that all the Celtic Childress Families came over on different boats at different times. But what if they all came over at once. Maybe on the 1745 crossing? I was researching passenger lists of ships that left out of scotland during the 1700s and found that on all of the ships, there were several families that came over not just one. On each one of these ships there was at least thirty different people. Also on each Ship there seemed to be a lot of people with the same name. What it seems like is that a couple different families went in on a ship together. Probably for money reasons. What if the John Childress Family came over with other childress families on the same ship during the 1745 crossing. Mark and Gary's family would definitly be on it because they have proof from family records. Other families could be on it but they didn't leave any kind of record or if they did it got destroyed.
Also these trips were trans atlantic voyages. They were not easy. There could have been a lot more people on the ship to help sail. From what I read, John Childress and his family were Saddlers and Blacksmiths. They didn't make a living by sailing. Also, they were pretty expensive. The first settlers in this country only come over because they recieved money from English Government. The ship could have been funded by several families instead of just one. I don't know how much they made back then but I don't know if it was enough to buy a whole ship to sail to America. Not only did they need a crew to sail them here, they needed food and supplies to last the whole voyage. This would take a quite a bit of money. I'm not saying that the John Childress Family did not do this. I am just saying that it is a possibility that they got some help from other families that traveled with them.
I think maybe the John Childress family could have sailed with other Childresses who were distant cousins.
Part II
Sorry if it patchy and hard to understand. I will try to connect it all so it makes sense.
I was researching and found a man named Drury Childress who married a Phoebe Bowles in Charlotte County Virginia in 1791. Drury Childress was listed as being bound out in Charlotte County in 1777 with his Sister Prucilla. Their mother was listed as being Sarah Childress. This Drury lived in Charlotte then moved to Buckingham County in 1810 and 1820 where I find him on the Censuses. In 1820 he has one son who was between 10-16 which coincides with the age of my grandfather William R. Childress born 1805. After 1820 I cannot find him. He lives right next to another Childress named William.
In the DNA project I match a man that has an oldest known ancestor of Charles F. Childress. This Charles was born in 1830 in Charlotte County Virginia. He has a brother named Tilman who was born in Charlotte County in 1824. This Tilman was a Saddler/Leatherworker as his occupation. Their mother is Elizabeth Childress. Charles lives with her during the 1860 Census. I believe their father is a John Childress. I am almost sure of it. There is a John Childress who was born in 1798 in Charlotte County and married Elizabeth Berkley (born in Charlotte 1800) in 1813. He lives in Charlotte county up until 1840 and then in 1850 he lives in Buckingham County with his wife Elizabeth, and his kids. One of which is named Drucilla. More on that later. In 1840 he has a son between 10-15 which coincides with Charles and a son between 15-20 which coincides with Tilman. In 1860 John is gone. I cannot find him in any censuses. Elizabeth shows up in a 1860 Census in Appomattox county living with her son Charles.
My question is why do both of these men who were born and married in Charlotte County move to Buckingham. I think that John's father is Drury Childress and Phoebe Bowles. John names a Daughter Drucilla. That is a very rare name. I think it was a mixture of the name Drury and the name Prucilla. I also think that they had family in Buckingham. Their line of the family moved from Buckingham which was Albemarle to Charlotte or what was Lunenberg at that time. Maybe why they moved was because they inherited some kind of land in Buckingham.
I think that my William R. Childress is the son of Drury and the Brother of John. Or Drury could be the Uncle of my William R. Childress.
There is a John Childress who marries Nancy Ferrell in 1781. They could be the parents of the Thomas Childress who lived next to my William R. for years and years. And this Thomas could be the father of my William R. but I find it unlikely seeing as Thomas Childress first marriage was in 1816 to Nancy Singleton Pugh, 11 years after my grandfather was born.
In conclusion, I would like to point out the POSSIBLE connections between my family and the family of Mark and Gary. Assuming that what I have said is true, my branch of Childress would have connections to Albemarle county which is where Mark and Gary's family starts out. Buckingham county was a part of Albemarle at one time. Not only that but Tilman was a saddler. This was an occupation of Mark and Gary's family while they were in Scotland. And lastly, John Childress who was born in 1798 is named John. I think it may be a family name. My grandfather's name, or the son of William R. Childress, is named Joseph Childress. This may be another family name.
I am really looking foward to what you all have to say whether it be to agree with me or disagree with me.

Is anyone haviing trouble getting the Childress DNA page to open at
Familytree DNA?
I have tried but it is not opening for me.

Hello all,
My name is Justin Childress and I am brand new to the list. I took the DNA test and I found that I belong in the Celtic Childress group.
I am trying to research my family line and I have found that my oldest known ancestor is named William R. Childress who was born in 1805 in Charlotte County Virginia. He married Mary Childress in 1828 in Mecklenburg county. There is also a John Childress who was born in Charlotte county in 1798. I think that they are brothers because of the place of birth and time range. I also think that they are brothers because I share the same genetic makeup as a person whoes latest ancestor was Charles Childress born in Charlotte county in 1830. I have done some research and I believe that this John Childress is Charles' father. This person and I would share a common ancestor that was the father of John and William R.
I have hit a wall and cannot find anything further as of right now. I think that I may be related to a Benjamin Childress who left a will in Charlotte County in 1779. I read that this Benjamin was the father of Joel Childress, father of Sarah Childress Polk, which made me wonder if there was anybody on this list that was related to this Joel. If there were somebody, I was hoping they could take the dna test. If anyone could help I would be highly thankful.
