Gloria,
I have been corresponding for some time with a descendant of Elisha (son of
John and Mary Farmer Childress) and Nancy Beasley (daughter of Charles
Beasley). Their sons were Lemuel, William, Wyatt, Harrison and Edmund.
There is an Sept 1810 Stokes County Apprentice Indenture with Charles
Beasley listing the names of the 4 older ones -- Lemuel , William , Wyatt
and Harrison.
None of these moved to Indiana. Some have tried to read Lemuel's name as
Samuel and there is a Samuel Elisha floating around. This is not him.
Lemuel is said to have married Nancy Vann, been in the Cherokee nation in
the early 1800's and was in TX Census in 1860 (age 67).William is known to
have died in MO. The other 3 died in clay Co. IL. It appears that Elisha
did not have a son bearing his name.

Hi,
I'm cleaning and found new info related to email thread below this new
email. Found a copy of a census page, unknown year. The page lists
Elisha Childress (born December 1791)'s parents as Elisha Childress and
Nancy Beasley (married January 1791). This contradicts Con's email
below, stating Elisha (born December 1791)'s father as William
Childress, Jr.
Children of Elisha Childress and Susanna (Arney or Coomer). There is no
birth name or parental information for Susanna on the census sheet.
Children listed in order as found on census sheet:
James B (1816)
Mary (1812)
Louisa (1820)
Elizabeth (?)
Then a blank line
Burgess (1825)
Lucy (ca 1828-29)
Albert (ca 1832)
Nancy (ca 1834)
William (ca 1837)
Alexander (1841)
Martha J (1844)
Elisha (1847)
The blank line, Susanna's age and the birth years suggest that James B,
Mary , Luisa and Elizabeth are not children of Susanna. In another
source, I find Elizabeth's birthdate as 1823 and no mention of Mary.
My questions:
1 Does anyone have solid evidence that Elisha Childress (born
1746; died 1821; married Nancy Beasley (January 18, 1791 in Stokes Co.,
NC)) is NOT the father of Elisha Childress (born December 4, 1791 in NC;
died 1872, Owen Co, IN)?? If so, what is that evidence?
2 To whom was Elisha Childress (born December 4, 1791 in NC; died
1872, Owen Co, IN) married before Susanna (Arney or Coomer)?
3 Are the four children listed above, James B., Mary, Luisa, and
Elizabeth, children of that marriage? Are they children of a relative?
4 Is Susanna's birth name Arney or Coomer? Could she have been
married a short time before she married Elisha?
5 Who are Susanna's parents?
Finally, I repeat that my father's records list Elisha Childress (born
December 1791) as a shoemaker, as was HIS FATHER (whether he was Elisha
or William or ?) I read, shoemaker, in Gary and Mark's post below
("the paternal great-grandparent of John Childress ("md. Lindsay")
was a shoemaker, born circa 1700").
Elisha (born December 1791) also was a farmer, coming to Owen County,
IN, in 1835 (from Stokes Co., NC). His Indiana land was farmed
continuously for over 100 years by the Childress family.
Any evidence regarding the 5 questions above would be greatly
appreciated!

Gloria,
Good to hear from you. I'm a little confused though by your post.
While
I know Elisha was the son of William Jr. and grandson of William Sr. of
Surry Co. NC, I've never seen any references to shoemakers in the
family.
Now, even if William Jr. was indeed a shoemaker, I doubt seriously that
William Sr. was. While I can't prove it directly (only by inference),
William Jr.'s wife appears to have been Maria Magdalena Helsabeck
(Christian Schauss' widow at the time he married her) and a member of
the
Moravian community -- maybe he picked up the trade there. If not, since
I
have so far been unable to connect William Sr. to anyone I do not have
any
evidence to indicate that shoemaking was in the family. It is
interesting
that the names within the family match those from Mark and Gary's
extended
family but so far I see no connections (except now shoemaking).

Per the following information, I must conclude there is an error in
information being circulated on the siblings of Bartholomew Childress b. 1801 SC and
died AL.
Per previously posted information found in Simpson Co KY, Bartholomew
Childress had a sister Nancy Terrell Childress who married ALSEY BROWN. In the 1850
census where were 5 Alsey Brown's living in the US, of which only one fits
the profile of a potential brother-in-law of Bartholomew. Based on the
following, and the conclusion that other researchers have missed locating siblings
of Bartholomew, Alsey Brown Childress would be a nephew of Nancy Terrell
Childress, wife of Alsey Brown of Allen Co KY.
Again, where can I find the source documentation for a will, deed, etc, that
can verify Bartholomew as a son of William Childress? Based on the location
of the Simpson Co KY information, the Thomas Childress living in the same
county as Jonathan Sentell/Senter in 1800 would be a logical choice.
Has there been DNA sampling of the supposed descendants of William
Childress?

This is a hand written biographical sketch obtained while visiting the

William Allen Brown was born was born in Allen Co. Ky. on 22nd day of

In various lineage website's such as FamilySearch.org and WorldConnect.org,
and various information found via a Google site for Bartholomew Childress, I
find no information that identifies Nancy and Elizabeth as Bartholomew's
sisters. I also cannot find any source information for assuming a William
Childress and Nancy Ward were his parents.
In the 1800 Edgefield Co SC Census, there is a Thomas Childress... and
Jonathan Sentell/Senters who is supposed to be Willis' Center's father. The
mention that Nancy Terrell Childress came from Georgia is interesting because
one of Jonathan Sentell/Senter's son's John migrated to Jones Co GA where a
William Childress is found in 1810.
Can anyone enlighten me on this delemma? The earliest Childress marriage in
Warren Co KY was Elisha Childress in 1828. Could he have been a younger
brother to Nancy, Elizabeth and Bartholomew? The migration of the
Centers/Senters and Childress family's from SC to GA for the Indian Lottery and gold
rush, then to southern KY together would make sense if Nancy and Elisha followed
their sister Elizabeth with her new husband Willis Center.
Thank you
