Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I have received word from Patrick Childress that he will have to assume
another DNA project responsibility and will not have sufficient time to look
for and assemble wills connected to Child??.
Some of these wills have already been placed on the web by me and only
require the snooping and querying to obtain any and all others available.
Is there someone out there who would like to take on this very important
project to this timeline? I am sure we have people out there who can
forward via email some of these plus a little querying around Rootsweb and
other sites may render some as well.
There is someone out there just itching to help. We would ALL appreciate
the effort. Thanks!

Steve

I have updated the site with minor changes. One difference I should point
out is I have created a dedicated research links page. If you have some
favorite research links and feel like everyone should have them, please send
them to me and I will include them on this page. Family web pages, if
connected to the Child?? line (like who isn't) only please! General
libraries with great online research areas are welcome.

We still need volunteers and data, so if you have marriages, births, wills,
etc to contribute, please do, but check the site first to make sure we do
not duplicate and please use the provided template (Preferred submission of
Wills or full length legal document transcriptions are Word, WordPad or any
general text editor.
Patrick Childress is working on wills, Rebecca Graham and Betty Rudolph are
working on census data, but I'm sure they all could use help!
Thanks for your time and information.

Steve and Childress Researchers,
Yes, I'm a lurker, But it's not so much as not wanting to participate as
not having the time right now. I just started a new job at a new business
just starting up in Birmingham (after two years of unemployment), so I've
been busy getting back into the swing of things. As a reminder of who I'm
researching:
Samuel W. Childress (my gr-gr-grandfather), b. 1860 Appomattox Co., VA.
Died ? Married ? Rosa Wood (?) (c1872-c1923), a Cherokee. (Actually, I
don't know if they really married, since it was illegal for whites to marry
Indians in VA.) Children: Willie (my gr-grandmother) (1888-c1918) and Mott
Hamilton (1892-?).
|
Lafayette H. "Fred" Childress, b. c1820 VA; d. 1890 Campbell Co., VA.
Married 7 Jul 1841 Charlotte Co., VA, Rebecca Ann Harris (c1823-1870).
Children: Nancy (c1845-?), Mary J. (c1848-?), Lucy C. (c1850-?), George W.
(c1853-?), Matilda A. B. (c1854-?), Samuel W., and Jefferson D. (c1870-?).
|
William? and Sally? Childress. Probable Children: Nancy S. (c1815-?),
Robert H. (c1814-?), Lafayette H., and William T.
I don't know much, but it seems that Lafayette and his siblings married
Harris siblings. Nancy S. Childress married George Washington Harris
(c1816-?), brother of Lafayette's wife Rebecca Ann, on 10 Jul 1841, in
Charlotte Co., VA. Lafayette and Nancy's brother Robert H. married Rebecca
and George's sister Sarah on 27 May 1841, also in Charlotte Co.
I'll check out the other Childress list. Thanks for the suggestion.

I do not know how many of you on this list also subscribe to the

I don't have anything that far back on my Childress family but Abraham is who I am looking at - and maybe his son Thomas? I am looking for Joseph Childress and Alexander Childress I think they are brothers or cousins both married Warriner sisters. They have connections to the Lindseys, Gathrights, Warriners and lived in Henrico County close to the Curles. Marie

This is my first posting to this mailing list.
I'm trying to find information on a John Childress, could be from Tennessee, moved to Texas in the early 1830s and died in Anderson County. Married to Elizabeth also could be from Tennessee and died in Anderson County, Texas. Two daughters, Sarah Ann married to D. M. Crist and Caroline married to Daniel Morgan.
Thanks
Lynn
I am sure this has been asked before, and also quite sure of the answer, but
is there some way to combine the archives so that only one search has to be
made to each list to find a query? Anyone searching for "Abraham
Childres/Childers/Childress" would have to perform at least 21 different
searches for the "Research" list and 27 for the "Childress" list.
I am sure they are archived by Rootsweb by year, but they could still cross
query. I'm not sure about others, but I for one find it frustrating to
waste time doing 48 different searches, then sift through good and bad and
still get confused. Or........is there something I am not aware
of..........? Could the list admin's talk to Rootsweb about this?

Steve

Now, thanks to the suggestion of Patrick Childress, the web site has a
functioning search engine from http://www.freefind.com/ If you have a web
site, I would like to pass on Pat's suggestion. It's fun and easy to
install.
The Frames version of the site, although functional, is not quite the way I
want it. It will take a little time, but before I put the effort into it,
is anybody using the frame version of the site? Feedback is always welcome,
no matter the flavor!
Thanks and happy searching!

The Stud Rooster
A farmer goes out one day and buys a brand new stud rooster for his
chicken coop.
The new rooster struts over to the old rooster and says, "OK old fart,
time for you to retire."
The old rooster replies, "Come on, surely you cannot handle ALL of
these chickens. Look what it has done to me. Can't you just let me have
the two old hens over in the corner?"
The young rooster says, "Beat it... you are washed up and I am taking
over."
The old rooster says, "I tell you what, young stud. I will race you around
the farmhouse. Whoever wins gets the exclusive domain over the entire
chicken coop."
The young rooster laughs. "You know you don't stand a chance old man.
So, just to be fair I will give you a head start."
The old rooster takes off running. About 15 seconds later the young
rooster takes off running after him. They round the front porch of the
farmhouse and the young rooster has closed the gap. He is already about 5
inches behind the old rooster and gaining fast.
The farmer, meanwhile, is sitting in his usual spot on the front porch
when he sees the roosters running by. He grabs his shotgun and... BOOM!!
He blows the young rooster to bits.
The farmer sadly shakes his head and says, "Darn it... third gay
rooster I bought this month."
Moral of this story... don't mess with the OLD FARTS. Age and
treachery will always overcome youth and skill!

Steve

Seeing as we are not getting very far here I thought maybe a new approach
might be better. How about if we take one family group at a time, starting
with Abraham the 1st, The Emigrant, Sr. or whoever you want to call him.
Let's set dates, places, children and wives that we ALL can agree on. (
this may be impossible too.) Since I'm dumb enough, I will throw some out
and you correct it.

Man I just read that first paragraph I wrote in the last update post. I
must have been drunk along with spell checker. I'm sorry for the
hieroglyphs (hope I spelled that ok).
Now it has been completed. Added a little history to our genealogy. There
are almost 2000 records in our data collection at this time. Probably half
Colonial history, but we are getting there. (actually 800 Colonial history
records)
I did have a thought though while updating the Timeline. Sometimes we "web
ninjas" (yeah right) forget that there are some people out there who are
just not computer literate and can barely use email. No one here of course,
but just in case one does show up here is a little tip on the Timeline.
If you haven't noticed, or noticed and just thought they were for looks,
there are 15 tabs at the bottom of your screen when it is displayed.
"Childres Timeline" "Library of VA Land Grants", "Deeds", etc. These tabs
work. If you just want to look at deeds press the "DEED" tab, "WILLS", the
"WILL" tab, so forth and so on and it will show you just those items. Also
the "HOME" tab will take you back to the welcome page without having to back
out using the back button.
I have had comments about the color of the fonts and the text. If ANYONE
has problems reading the data, please let me know. Monitors differ in color
presentation and yours may not look the same as mine does. So let me know
what you see best and worst. I tried to keep the different data different
colors so that when combined you could pick them out, but...... Anyway let
me know. I can't fix it if I don't know.
I hope this helps you to quickly find what you are looking for and heightens
your enjoyment of our website.
Thanks all and happy hunting!
Regards,
Steve
