Subject: looking for a brother
I'm looking for a man named "Willie Childress" raised by Flora or Fannie
Childress. His brother was adopted by a Brooks family in Surry County,
NC and would love to reunite with his brother if possible. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.
Hello list,
I wanted to re-post and update a message from 5 years ago.
Gary
Update:
To date, I have been unsuccessful at verifying any information about
Yorkshire, UK Childers or Childress documents such as those that claim a
marriage to Ann Ramsden and a lineage in Yorkshire of a Hugh
Childers/Childress.
Those archives in the UK which ought to have such records, so far have
not found the material and I am confident that at least some of the
citations for material posted on the Internet on Yorkshire
Childers/Childress are spurious or inadequately cited.... I think on
purpose. The often quoted Soundsby or Saundsby Manor to which UK
Childers/Childress are supposed to have some connection never existed
according to UK archivists who record the existence of manor homes. I
have never encountered anyone who has the original material nor who can
quote me the sources of Yorkshire UK material that then withstands
inspection (when you try to find the citations, you can't, the citations
are inadequate, incomplete and an untraceable, dead end...a wild goose
chase) nor has anyone produced a hard photocopy of any UK Yorkshire
records even though those supposed Yorkshire records are often quoted on
the internet.
The Yorkshire archives DO show an Ann Ramsden, but I have found no
marriage record to a Childers or Childress to an Ann Ramsden in the
Ramsden Estate private papers. Ann Ramsden was widowed ca 1640's from
Sir Ramsden in Yorkshire but there is no re-marriage record to a
Childers/Childress.
It is my belief that early in the 20th Century, Childers genealogy was
the brunt of a fraudulent researcher who faked his research on a grand
scale, quoting documents that do not exist and that this bogus genealogy
now has a life of its own getting re-posted on the internet at
intervals.
If anyone ever finds photocopies of original Yorkshire
Childress-Childers documents please let me know. I have indexes of
British records on CD discs and those extant records in Yorkshire are
scant pickings.
Below is an e-mail I received regarding Ann Ramsden from the Yorkshire
Archivist.

Dear Mr Childress,
I reply to your email of 3rd November 1999, a copy of which has just
been passed to me by Huddersfield Local Studies Library.
We hold the estate collection of the Ramsden family here in Kirklees
District Archives. It includes deeds, estate surveys and rentals,
correspondence, and other papers, mainly relating to the Ramsden
family's lands in Huddersfield and Almondbury. There are few personal
records of the members of the Ramsden family themselves, and little
about lands they held elsewhere in the country.
I have checked the collection and the only information I can find which
might be of interest to you is that Sir John Ramsden married Anne,
daughter of Lawrence Overton, in 1634. She was his second wife, and
they do not seem to have had any surviving children. She had already
been married twice
before herself, firstly to George Chamberlayne, and secondly to John
Poole. In 1642 Sir John Ramsden bought the manor of Saddleworth to add
to his other estates. During the Civil War he fought on the side of
King Charles I, and he died during the siege of Newark Castle in 1646.
His wife survived him but nothing is said in these records as to her
marrying again. She was still alive and referred to as Lady Anne
Ramsden in 1648. Sir John's estates were inherited by his son of his
first marriage, William Ramsden. In 1654 William Ramsden sold the manor
of Saddleworth to William Farrer of Ewood.
I hope this information is of use to you.
Yours truly,
Elizabeth Briggs,
Archivist
Do not panic! This is a hoax that has been around causing panic since for
more that 4 years! Don't send it out and propagate more panic. These types
of warnings, however good they may sound, should be checked out with McAfee
or Symantec to be sure they are a real threat, or as this one is, a hoax
before forwarding on to others.
