There are 28 people who have requested DNA test kits, but some haven't
yet returned the kits or are awaiting results. There are currently 8
different distinct DNA groups that are unrelated to each other by
DNA,i.e. Haplotypes. (2 lineages will be keeping their results,
unpublished for the momemt and have only one person in each of those
unpublished Haplotypes)
Group ONE has 14 people in it, or 50% of the test results. It points
out that you have to be sure which group you are in before connecting up
records.
We are finding it useful too. Knox County, TN is a seat of a lot of the
Group TWO Childresses since the late 1780's. But a Group ONE individual
Loney Richard Childress shows up being born in Knox County, TN in 1908
and we are now trying to identify which records are which in the late
1800's and early 1900's as those 2 DNA Haplotype's records get
co-mingled.

Gary

Hello Gary @motion-ind.com,
No, sorry, the DNA won't give you a "tree". All DNA says is that you
share a common ancestor sometime in the past 1000 years (40 generations)
with some other person who has also taken the DNA test. It doesn't say
when that COMMON ancestor lived. DNA won't give you relationships or the
individual names of your ancestors....not who....not when...not how they
are related.
DNA is useful nevertheless, because only about one-third of our
ancestors left enough records to be identified. There are not enough
records to go around....many ancestors will never be identified....they
lived and died without a trace and will forever remain that way. There
will be gaps in most everybody's research...questions never to be
answered. Information lost to the ages.
But with 8 different lineages already identified and more groups likely
to emerge, it behooves you to know which group (Haplotype) you link up
with...so you can share information with other researchers investigating
the same DNA kin and try to make sense of what records do remain.

There is a town along the coastal area of Britain, above Wales and below
Scotland called Childer-Thornton. It has some surviving Viking words
that is suggestive of Viking raids. Some of the Childers and Childress
lineages are haplogroups found in common in the Scandinavian DNA.
CHILDER THORNTON at http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/chs/childth.htm
A township in Eastham Parish, Wirral Hundred (SJ 3677). In 1933 the
civil parish was extended to include part of Hooton, and in 1950 Childer
Thornton became part of Ellesmere Port civil parish.
Included the hamlet of Thornton Heath.
The population was 112 in 1801, 319 in 1851 and 685 in 1901.
It is in Chesire county... see map at
..http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/chs/index.htm
Note the town is spelled WITHOUT ANY "S" and the Google search engine
won't find anything unless you leave off any and all "s".
Our family has an heirloom cane from circa 1775, hand carved, hand
rubbed....makes me wonder if any of that wood soaked up some or even a
lot of the oily hands of the carver. Future generations may have
handled the cane....after if it was sealed or lacquered or covered with
grime.... but it makes me wonder if we gently washed the surface of the
cane and scraped a little of that wood, might'n there be some DNA oil
soaked into the wood from the person who stroked it first and the
stroked it the most. If we didn't wash the cane and found 50 kinds of
DNA....but one matched a known lineage of Childress/Childers....what
inference would you draw?
I'm speculating... but what if the person who handled a family bible the
most could be identified by the percentage of residue. If 75% of the
residue matches....each other...is that the DNA of the owner? Again,
what if it matches a known lineage of Childress/Childers, what
conclusion would you draw?
There was a trumpet in our family for a while and if you've ever seen a
trumpet player warm up....there is a valve on the trumpet to drain
saliva. What residue remains inside the trumpet to this day?
One book author says that Mitchel Childress of Knox County, TN born 1750
and who is much researched, fought at the battle of Kings Mountain and
left a rifle.... I have tried and failed to find the source of that
author's statement. But...what if.... the rifle stock had DNA oil from
the cheek and neck of person who rested his head against the rifle as it
was aimed. You get the idea. Even if other people handled the gun and
their DNA is also on the gun, you have to wonder... what if.... some DNA
were found that matched a known lineage of Childress/Childers....would
you conclude that the reason is because the owner was of that lineage
too. If the DNA doesn't match....then the DNA results are inconclusive
and not particularly helpful. It is the matching DNA that causes pause.
The Sarah Childress Polk lineage has died off without any male
descendants who carry the name....but a letter to President Polk from
one of Sarah's brothers sold on EBAY recently...If DNA where found on
the fingerprints of that letter that matched you, what would you
conclude about your lineage.
It's just food for thought. And maybe it will encourage people to come
forward with artifacts too.
I especially like the part in the article about the DNA tests getting
cheap and quick.
