[Childress-L] Armajor Childress
by Conduff G. Childress, Jr.
Dear List,
As many of you may recall I made the case that Armajor and Major Childress in Surry(Stokes) Co NC is one and the same person close to two years ago. Questions continue to arise about the name Armajor. In showing somone how to do a search I just happened to put in the name Armajor in www.dogpile.com, a multi-search engine site. The results were interesting and I would like to share them with you.
There were 4 Armajors (not including descentants with the same name and ignoring the Italian surname Armajor). These are
1) Armajor Childress -- who we have been discussing;
2) Armajor Hall in LA -- nothing of note here;
3) Armajor White in NC -- there is also an Alexander Robert Major White
and
3) Armajor Hancock (son of John Hancock and Elizabeth Maddox married by Rev. Douglas in Goochland Co. on Oct. 16, 1755).
This Amajor is not only a contemporary of Armajor(Major) Childress timewise but also was located in the same county at that time.
The details for him may be instructive in interpreting our Armajor.
The site is Benjamin Hancock's Family: Second Generation http://home.flash.net/~jwhancoc/d0/i0000103.htm
The interesting details are
1) In his will in Patrick Co VA , John refers to his son as Major.
2) In the pension application written by Nancy Handcock Corn there is a quote due to one William Morrison, Sr. 13 Jan 1846 - Clinton KY where it states he (Jesse Corn) "is a brother-in-law of Armajor Handcock who is a brother of Nancy Corn".
3) On 28 Nov 1849 - Albany, KY - ..." R. Major Hancock (his signature) of Wayne County, KY, states he .... -- in a matter which refers to both his sister Nancy and her husband Jesse Corn.
The point is that Armajor is Major is R. Major. This may also be the case with our Armajor. If R. stood for anything my two top candidates would be Richard or Robert.
