>From the Foreward
"The Reverend William Douglas came to St. James Northam Parish, in Goochland County, Virginia, (Dover Church), on the 12th of October, 1750. A memorandum in the Register shows that he had charge of St. James Northam Parish for twenty-seven years; Maniken Town (King William Parish), for nineteen years, and ministered to a charge in Buckingham County for four years.
There had been, according to his statement, no parish register kept up to the time that he took charge. He began, on the 15th of September, 1753, keeping a record of the marriages performed by him. The book in which the Register is kept, was procured by him at the beginning of the year 1756 and was kept from that time until near the time of his death, which occurred on the 7th of February, 1798. But he inserted many of the marriages performed by him before 1756, and in the matter of births the record goes back to 1705 -- including the names and dates of birth of children given him by parents, who desired them recorded."

Comments:
1) William and Ann Childers are the same individuals as William and Anne Childress of Stokes Co NC -- Page 84. 7 January 1822. Will of William CHILDRESS, Senr. September Term 1822. Wife Anne -- Stokes County, North Carolina Wills Volumes I-IV 1790-1864. Mrs. W. O. Absher 1985 Southern Historica Press, Inc. Easley SC. Here is the data (Douglas Register/ 1822 Stokes Co will) and matchup on the children:
Douglas Register 1822 will
Joseph born 25 Nov 1764, baptized 28 Apr 1765 deceased, family in TN -- not in will
William Jr born 5 Apr 1766, baptized 11 May 1766 listed 1st in will
Elizabeth born 9 Apr 1768, baptized 15 May 1768 listed 2nd in will
Benjamin born 15 Apr 1771, baptized 27 Oct 1771 listed 3rd in will
(Nancy) Ann born 19 Mar 1773, baptized 16 May 1773 listed as Nancy and 5th in will
twins Jesse and Sally born 30 Jan 1776, baptized 10 Mar 1776 sons of Jesse (William,Joseph, and
Samuel listed as such) listed 4th in will
Sally listed 6th in will
Susannah not in register listed 7th in will
It also seems likely that Anne may have originally been a Childress herself, given the number of times Rev. Douglas had to get a maiden name out of her and got only the same name as her husbands.
2) Mathew and Major are likely William Sr.'s brothers. Interesting that they all three had a daughter baptized on the same day. All show up in Stokes County and there is considerable data to support this inference which I will post at a later time.
3) I'm very curious as to who Capt. Childers was. Was he Abraham? There was an Abraham who left a will in Albemarle Co at this time with a son named Creed which matches the Abraham above. It has been claimed by some that the Abraham of the will is Abraham III of the Childers lineage of Abrahams. Since the name Creed shows up in the Childresses who went to Knox Co I think this Abraham needs futher scrutiny. What do you know out there?
4) Since things have been quiet on Joel (father of Sarah Childress Polk) for awhile, I think its time to throw in some tidbits to resurrect the issue. First, I have looked carefully at the original data on the indenture issue between Abraham and Stephen. All my data point to Stephen being young -- and not the Stephen who went to TN. It looks very much to me that this try for an indenture of Joel to Stephen was a ploy and it did get squelched. This raises again the possibility that Joel's father Benjamin could have been a John Benjamin as some have suggested and may have gone by John rather than Benjamin (the use of Benjamin was part of the ploy?). Now for the fuel, if it were true then John Childers/Childres married to Lucy Woodrum above and parents of James, born Jul 16, 1773, is a very good candidate. Supposedly, James of AL and born in 1773, is claimed by Joel's family as a brother to Joel. Could it be that John had a second wife named Susan, that he is Be!
njamin, and the father of Joel? Could this James be a half-brother to Joel? What is known out there to support or discount this hypothesis? Does anyone have the exact date of birth of this James of Alabama?
5) I didn't throw out the last comment just to stir things up. I'm still trying to identify the Abraham associated with Joel. Right now, until shot down, the Abraham listed above may have been him or have been the father of this Abraham.
