Michelle
Mark and/or Gary or anyone else,
I have a question for you. Back in April 2001, you posted a message for me
with family information. You gave me the following:
1. ROBERT SR1 CHILDRESS was born in Carroll County, VA. He married MASSEY H
BOYD Abt. 1851,
daughter of JOSEPH BOYD and SARAH MANKINS.
Notes for MASSEY H BOYD:
At the time of the 1850 Census for Patrick Co., VA, Massey was 20 years old.
Children of ROBERT CHILDRESS and MASSEY BOYD are:
i. JULIANA2 CHILDRESS, b. Abt. 1852.
ii. POSEY CHILDRESS, b. Abt. 1854.
iii. EDWARD CHILDRESS, b. Abt. 1856.
iv. CONSTANTINE CHILDRESS, b. Abt. 1857; m. JENNY BELTON, 29 December 1875,
Surry County, NC.
v. FAITHY ANN CHILDRESS, b. Abt. 1860; m. W A BELTON, 28 September 1876,
Mount Airy, Surry Co., NC.
vi. ROBERT "BOBBY" CHILDRESS, JR, b. Abt. 1864; m. DELPHIA DAWSON, 04
September 1885.
vii. WILLIAM MART (BILLY) CHILDRESS, b. 1866, Carroll County, VA; d. 06
June 1927, Mount Airy,
Surry County, NC; m. LORENA DAWSON, 21 July 1888
However, the information that my older brother has sent, has the following
in regards to Robert Childress;
Robert W. Childress 1813 married Ana F. Wiant of Albermale County, Va March
19, 1857.
One of their sons Constantine was born October 1858 in Hillsville Va.
He married Virginia Belton who was born July 1858 in Winston Salem N.C.
One of their sons Isaac Marion Childress was born July 23, 1886 in
Hillsville Va. He married Thelma Evelyn Anderson of Bristol, Va. born
October 2, 1894.
One of their sons Clyde O Childress born August 10,1915 married Margaret
Lucy McCall of Newland N.C. on November 17, 1934. She was born May 17,1918
This Robert Childress, according to what my older brother found, has a
middle initial of "W" and married Ana F. Wiant. One of their sons was
Constantine b. in October 1858 and married Virginia Belton. In your
listing Constantine was born about 1857. So, they could be the same. You
list the wife as Jenny Belton. Jenny could be short for Virginia. So,
they most likely are the same. You mention the birth of some being in
Carroll County, VA. Hillsville, VA is the County Seat of Carroll
County. So, now I am confused about who Robert married. You have a Massey
Boyd and my brother has Ana F Wiant. I am confused.

Gary or Mark,
I forwarded you message about the DNA testing to my older brother, Clyde,
who lives in California, where he stay after retiring from the U.S. Marine
Corps.
He "cc'ed" me a message that he send to you. However, I have not see it on
the list. So, I was wondering if you got it? Could you advise
please. Besides saying that he would like to participate in the DNA
testing, he gave a listing of our ancestry, back to Robert W Childress b.1813.
If you didn't get it, I can forward the information on to you.
Thanks.
David Childress
Richmond, VA
Hello David,
Yes, I got Clyde's message that you describe. The message was sent to my
London2001(a)earthlink.net e-mail and doesn't show up on this list. Only
messages sent to Childress-L(a)rootsweb.com show up on the list.
Thank you and Clyde for sending also the outline of your family tree that in
part said, "Clyde O Childress (Senior), son of Isaac Marion Childress, son
of Constantine Childress, son of Robert W. Childress which is as far back as
I have traced my Childresses. Robert W. Childress 1813 married Ana F. Wiant
of Albemarle county, VA March 19, 1857."
Since then we have been trying to figure out how that fits with our
research. Initially, without looking up any records, we thought Robert W.
Childress might be a Robert "Waller" Childress......but after consulting the
records Mark realized we were in error. We do show a Robert "Morrison"
Childress married to Ana Wiant (w Wyant) of Albemarle County, VA. Could
your Robert "W" really be Robert "M".... in which case Robert Morrison
Childress is out of Benjamin Childress Jr. Otherwise more research and
documentation is needed.
Mark is working on that lineage but it will be months and months before he
has compiled the final citations and finishes writing the synopsis which we
will submit to you. Mark is going to get the death certificate of
Constantine Childress and that will take some time.
If you have any copies of original documents, which is the major cause of
delay in our research, we'd love to see copies and will pay for any costs
you encounter duplicating original records.
Nice to meet you David and Clyde. I'll be very interested to see what our
DNA shows.
Regards
Gary

Hi Gary
I am interested in participating in your DNA research.
I am a descendent of Robert Childress who died in Anderson Co. South

your research.

Hello,
I'd love to have you participate or any of your kinfolk.
Usually, all else being equal, the older person in the family is best since
they are less likely not to have had their DNA mutated. Every generation
gets a copy of their father's DNA, the more generations that are conceived,
the more likely that the DNA mutates away from the original pattern.
I am trying to determine if we can get some non-mutated DNA that descends
out of Mitchel Childress (b. 1750). If we could get the DNA of a couple of
distantly related descendants of Mitchel Childress (b. 1750) then we might
make the assumption with some assurances that today's descendants still
carry the exact copy of Mitchel Childress's DNA.
Mitchel Childress's (b. 1750) Y-Chromosome may be different than that which
I carry of John Childress (b1759). Both Mitchel and John lived and died in
Knox County, TN. It has long be the subject of speculation how closely
related were these two people. We may be able to compare their descendant's
DNA and get some clues.
Send me your participants name and mailing address, if you wish to go
forward...and I hope you do.
Thanks much
Gary

Are there any Male Childresses whose ancestors trace to Stokes County NC and
Surry County, NC circa 1800-1900 on this list who would be willing to
participate in the Childress DNA project.
This may be the closest surviving lineage to Sarah Childress Polk and we
would like to have some DNA from these families if anyone knows a male
Childress from this branch.
Thanks
Gary

Hello William A. Childress of Murfreesboro, Tn
You are welcome to participate. Glad to have you on board. Could you
please e-mail me your MAILING ADDRESS and I will add you to the list of
people being tested.
Here is how I'm handling the process.
1) In the middle of February I'll contact you and everybody else by e-mail
who has alerted me that they want to participate... and CONFIRM YOUR MAILING
ADDRESS.
2) then in mid-February I will tell the laboratory to mail the DNA test kits
to you and the other participants. You can follow the instructions in the
DNA test kit and send it back to the laboratory, with the fee $169....
3) then we wait about 30 days for the laboratory to send us the results...
that's how simple it is
So send me your Mailing Address when you get a chance.

<PRE>Gary, I am following with a great deal of interest the Childress DNA project.
Once we had a presentation at our genealogy society and the stress was on
the females being tested, I sought to do this at that time, but there was no
follow up. I am a female Childress descendent and was a bit confused that
now only males are being tested. Can you please clarify this for me.
