Considering that you are in Richmond I thought perhaps...I found mine from
KY back to Goochland and now starting to go back further.

Thanks for your interest and offer to help, but I believe we're talking
about two different families. I was wrong when I thought my grandmother was
from the Bristol area. My grandfather was from there and we thought that
was where they met, but later learned that she was born in Heiskell,
Tennessee, near Knoxville.
Thanks to another distant relative, we now have a complete list of her
brothers' and sisters' names, a few of whom I remembered from childhood.
Her father's name was William Jason Childress, and her mother was Amanda
Ellen Cox. We were even able to get a copy of a photo of William and Amanda
through contacts made on the Childress mailing list, so it has been very
helpful.
Thanks again - I hope you'll be lucky in whatever searches you're making
for your family.

There is a small town or community near Bristol Tn.named Childress. I had and
uncle named Fred and one named Clyde that I am named after. I am in Laurens
S.C..My grandfather was Thomas. Bascom Childress and great grandfather was
Richard Childress. I can find nothing about the great grandfather other than
his children . Those I have a record of.

Hello,
I have been receiving the Childress List messages for a while now. But,
due to a number of issues and problems here, I have not taken the time to
read any until today. I just read yours and saw you were looking for a
Belle Childress from Bristol, TN.
Belle is a cousin, I think. I had an Uncle Fred Childress, my grand
father's brother, who lived in Bristol, TN. When my father (Clyde Onesimus
Childress) and mother (Margaret Lucy McCall) met and got married, they were
living in Bristol. They eloped one night, driving up to Abington to get
married. But lived in Bristol for a number of years.
My grand father (he died when I was around 1 and a half in 1950) was named
Issac Marion Childress. Uncle Fred was his brother. Belle, I think, was
Fred's daughter. However, I am not sure.
I just recently obtained a bunch of family information stuff from my older
brother. But, I have not had the time to go through any of it. Anyway,
I'll do some checking and see what I can come up with for you. Who knows,
maybe we are related somewhere along the line.

Dear listers,
I am new to this list and I am trying to enlist your assistance. Does anyone on the list have a Tabitha CHILDRESS b. about 1833 in Alabama, who in 1851 married in Arkansas to Clark FLETCHER and died in 1874 in Louisiana? I am trying to find her parents names. Can you help? I would appreciate hearing from you.

I surely hope that you are feeling better!! I sure wish they could clear up
the problem in your shoulder! for good!
I know that you are staying off the computer, and having to stay in bed a
lot--I'm so sorry about that! I know too much about such things! but not
right now! YEA!!
Love YOU so much!

I just found out that the state of Ohio offers copies of birth/death/marriage certificates for just three cents plus postage ! The postage runs, as well as I remember, thirty four censt for the first four copies, then goes up by ounces.
The copies provided are not certified or signed. Otherwise they are just like copies of any other certificate.
I am now wondering if all or any other states offer this uncertified copies at rates cheaper than the five dollars I pay here in Oklahoma ?

Dear Debbie,
It appears from your mention of Pedlar Mills that your family may be related
to John Childress born circa 1740 who is identifiable in deeds of record in
18th Century Amherst County Virgina as living on the Pedlar River. He had
at least one son John Childress Jr. (married to Sarah Goode) who also lived
on the Pedlar River until about 1803. Their descendants are not clearly
understood.
Regarding the families that you mention such as Hudson, Camden,
Carter, Goolsby, Stinnette, Sandidge, Wright, Pryor, Thomas, Smith, Coleman,
Woody, those families intermarried with the Childresses of Amherst County in
the late 1700's.
It would be helpful to know where your ancestor John Alexander Childress
died. Because if that were known, the County Clerk might be able to provide
a death certificate with the names of John Alexander Childress's parents.
The possibility exists that you distant Childress ancestors of early 1800
Amherst tie in with a different Childress lineage than the Pedlar River
Childresses. It will be a couple of years before the Amherst County
Childresses are fully understood.
We would love to have you send us a map of where your family homestead was
in Amherst County. We would like to visit the site and rumage around that
family cemetery.

Greetings! First of all I am very new to all of this, and to each of you
receiving this, I already appreciate greatly just by reading your responses
on lists, message boards, etc.and your cheerful willingness to help others.
That must be such a testament to the kind of person you are in "real life"
and I hope to be blessed by making a connection to at least one of you! If
not, still know that your hard work and diligence is an inspiration and
enjoyment to one already feeling quite overwhelmed by this!
Debbie Childress Croy. I was born in Amherst County, VA the
daughter of Irene Elizabeth Hudson Childress and John Henry Childress. He
was
the son of John Wesley Childress and Willie Palmer Raikes Childress. My
Mother was born and raised at "Peddler Mills," (Mt. Pleasants/Agricola) and
my father was born on the "family homeplace" in Madison Heights, both in
Amherst Co. Although I want to pursue my Hudson heritage and would certainly
appreciate any input here, I am concentrating on the Childress~Raikes family
lines right now.
My Father's Grandfather was John Alexander Childress (I believe) and I do
not
know anything for certain in addition to that. I speculate there are the
possibilities of a Hall or a Carter line, but have absolutely nothing to
offer in that regard. It is to my understanding that my ancestors had been
on
this property for MANY years prior to the time my Father and his brothers
were born in the house, where I was also raised. The property has many
"family relations" properties nearby, such as the Raikes/Rakes, Camdens,
Mays, Halls, and others. There were other family members that left the
Amherst Co. area for Texas, and westward. Once again this being purely
speculative on my part perhaps into Charleston, West Virginia, Cincinnati,
Ohio, Iowa and California and other areas. I think this for a couple of
"late
at night" trains of thought...as with many Childress lines I have skimmed
over, I feel they generally took up residency very near water, (as I myself
would do now and am sure most families back then tried to do) in addition
with quick looks at maps, certain areas seem to have certain name
connections; as Amherst is found in Ohio and Iowa and other states, but
also
familiar to me~ family names seem to have settled and grown into towns or
counties in close proximity. I thought maybe these families of the past
break
off with others from the area in bonds formed out of marriage connections,
friendships or occupations and build these new lives. I also suspect that is
why there are so many same (quite English!) given names, maybe it is in
respect to family members and an attempt to remain connected to the original
families that do have to ultimately connect at some point if we ever trace
them back to Adam and Eve!
I am so sorry I did not pay closer attention to my Father as he would
mention
Uncle Robert, Jacob or Joel or Aunt Lizzie or Maggie or a cousin Charlie or
so and so Hall, Sandidge or...even little memories drift back from often
visiting where I got my first kitty when I was around five, and naming him
Peppermint Thomas Kitty CARTER Childress, because it was his FIRST families
name! Is this normal to experience, or is it simply sleep depravation from
going to too many websites late at night????
My family seemed to stay in the grocery/meat, and orchard businesses along
with Tours of Duty in the military, and building and renting houses. Are
there any avenues you suggest for these few clues???
I was an only child, never knowing my grandparents as they passed away
before
I was born, or very young. My parents were older when they had me and I did
not really know other family members well because most had basically started
their own lives by the time I was born. Sadly the majority of my family
members have passed away and it has been twenty years since I married and
left the area.
There is a family cemetery on what use to be our property that I have not
been to since I was a little girl when my Father or Uncle would take care of
it. I am sure it is probably overgrown and unknown now. I have been unable
for a long time to return "home." This is another reason I am eager to learn
of my blood lines as I have a blood loss disorder and the "specialists" have
not been able to find the cause. Has anyone heard of any other "bad blood"
(not fights!) in the actual blood lines? See!...I am not just trying to seek
out the Blue Bloods among us!
I Thank you so much in advance for reading this apologetically LONG letter,
and hope I am not being too presumptuous in contacting you in this manner,
but as I said I am so impressed with each of your genealogy expertise! I am
seeking advice before I do anything as far as message boards or other
"trails" I should follow along this super information highway route!
I am listing my Father and Uncle's info and will add Surnames afterward of
which I feel fairly certain are family names to this "sap"ling, me!
Family Names: Childress/Raikes, Hudson/Camden
Carter, Hall, Ragland, Goolsby, Mays, Giles, Stinnette, Sandidge, Rucker,
Wright, Shepherd, Abbott/Abbitt, Pryor, Barnes, Mason, Thomas, Bryant, Cash,

Doyle, Pauley, O'Brien, Bell, Wood, Bush, Woody, Patterson, Johnson, Harris,
Phelps, Ramson, Banton, Corbitt, Wilkerson,Whitten, Perry, Morris, Harris,

(My Parents share the family names of Camden, Wright, Mays and possibly
others).
Corinne,
I have a Childress line in VA . . . give me a chance to check all my
materials, and make a trip to the library, and I'll get back to you.

Hi List:
I just joined your list last night. First, let me say how much I
enjoyed reading the history of the Childress line in the welcome
message. Particularly the part about the Scots-Irish insisting on
spelling their surname correctly. It reminds me of a story pertaining
to another Scots-Irish gentleman connected to my line. The story has
been handed down for generations about how he always insisted on the
correct spelling of his last name, Tomlinson.
My name is Corinne Chadderdon and I live in Coeur d'Alene, ID USA. I
have been researching for a little over 3 years so I am not quite a
newby but still not an experienced researcher. I found my Childress
connection on the internet over 2 years ago but have been documenting
each generation as I work my way back. I am finally to my
ggggg-grandmother Hexy Childress who married Wood King. At least that
is what is out there on the web.
I would love to correspond with anyone who has Hexy in their records. I
am looking for the source for this marriage. Of course, when I document
that Hexy is indeed my 5X's great-grandmother then I would also love
documentation as to her parents. My best estimate is that Hexy
Childress was b. abt. 1780-90 in either VA or NC. Her son Woodard P.
King m. Elizabeth House Capps probably in Warren Co., NC.
Any help will be greatly appreciated,
Corinne
